A disabled veteran and his service dog were abused by United Airlines staff, he has claimed.

Jim Stanek, a three-tour Iraq veteran suffering from post traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury, said employees of the airline kicked his dog, Sarge, and asked him if he was retarded.

In a YouTube video the Paws and Stripes founder describes his ordeal which began on July 16 at Dulles International Airport in Washington.

Just got one of those myself. I call him the little four legged black and tan land shark or Maxwell for short.

Someone ought to make a demotivational poster out of that as a definition of ‘irony’...

*Twice* should go in there somewhere.

"The headline should read, “Disabled Vet Jailed For Beating The Living $hit Out Of UA Staff For Kicking His Dog”.

That was my thought also. If I had been there and seen it, It would have been me in jail. I would have cold-cocked the UA employee.
Totally unacceptable behavior from UA employees. I hope UA does a full investigation and if the story is true fire the employees that acted in a totally unprofessional manor.
Once fired they will then be at Mickey D's messing up our orders there.

Well, we can agree on the need to have this examined further, no matter how it turns out.

I would be very upset with Sgt Stanek if it turned out he was fabricating or over blowing these events. Just as I’d be pretty upset with the airlines if it turns out the event is recounted accurately.

I logged many hundreds of thousands of miles in the air during the 70s and 80s. Then I didn’t fly a whole lot for a number of years. Two summers ago, my wife and I flew to Ft Lauderdale on vacation and I was appalled at how the airline service (we flew United both ways, BTW) had deteriorated. I can honestly say that taking MAC flights to VietNam twice was a more enjoyable experience than that little jaunt. I guess I may be harboring some prejudice against them for a really miserable episode in an otherwise great vacation.

On a personal note, I was totally unaware that you had any sort of disability at all. You certainly have mastered communication and understanding in this medium!

“I admit I am jaded.”

I’m also somewhat jaded. Especially with the MSM. However, I’m sure they’ll have some surprises in store.

I think it is interesting that Stanek went to YouTube to voice his concerns. I heard some talking head on Fox mention that YouTube is becoming a legit source for news info... as the lamestream news its credibility. Heh.

It disgusts me that *journalism* no longer exists and the news outlets are all about commentary. We’re doomed.

Dear Mr. 6-Pack

I’d be interested in your assessment of this story as I value your ability to judge character and clear thinking on fraudulent matters.

I think my emotions have overcome my ability to be rational about this.

Unfortunately, that appears to be ‘pain breathing’.

I hope he had the good sense to have the dog checked for internal injuries.

I’ve seen *lots* of dreaming dogs and far too many injured dogs.

Is there any way to contact him and tell him to have the dog x-rayed like *yesterday*?

Dogs are built to conceal their pain as a survival tactic.

They can ‘hide’ a damaged liver/spleen/cracked ribs/etc until it’s too late to save them.

My Izzy was _bleeding out internally_ from taking Rimadyl which blew out her liver and I had *no* clue until I found her _dying_ one morning.

In less than a few minutes, she went from looking fine to dead.

I could be a complete butthead but there is something about the man that I don’t like or trust.

I understand PTSD intimately and this fella just isn’t moving my heart strings or my pocketbook one bit.

Also, what loving owner stands by if their dog is kicked TWICE without reason? I can’t respect that.

I am not a man but a real man no matter their personal issue doesn’t allow the collared and semi defenseless being— be abused.

Actually, it goes against everything PTSD. I will leave it at that. I don’t connect to or trust the fella. I don’t care if he is ex-military or not.

“I think my emotions have overcome my ability to be rational about this.”

I think that’s the same issue Mr. Stanek has. PTSD sufferers have a reduced ability to rationalize unfamiliar situations. When a situation gets outside their ‘rational zone’ things fall apart fast. Some have commented on him being trustworthy. He probably is not in this case since he’s all about emotions and reactions to being in an overwhelming situation which was directed at his sense of security and stability. His memory and thoughts are emotion-based and he may have other issues like depression going on.

He needs to go on some walks, deal with the anger and let go of the blame.

Thanks for your reply. I believe you. While the video is kinda fuzzy...I thought Sarge looked like he was dreaming [nightmare from her ordeal]...with the eye movements and twitching leg/paw.

I think this is a general email addy: VeteranDogs*at*pawsandstripes.org

LOL!

I assume your Land Shark is a pup?

He’ll grow out of it, somewhat.

Dobermanns are very “mouthy” and express their affection by taking your hand/arm/whatever in their mouth and gently holding it.

With needle-like puppy teeth, it’s not so much fun.

:)

When I leave the house, I say ‘Bye” to the dogs and tell Odin to “take care of the house and the girls” and as I shut the door, I reach in to him and he always ‘mouths’ my hand goodbye.

When I come back home, it’s the first thing he does when I come in the door...I think it’s kinda universal like “Aloha” to them, or something...;D

Add to that a TBI...I’m tellin’ ya from experience...the slightest disruption/change [in my case] can throw you completely off...I think he referenced he *worked* on his emotions ....I can completely go off the handle....which is unlike the *old* me. It’s very frustrating...knowing what you were like *before* the TBI and what it’s like afterward/now.

The breathing was too fast and erratic for my comfort.
There seemed to more distress/emphasis on the exhale than the inhale which never a good sign.

If I saw one of my dogs breathing like that, I’d be freaking out and on the way to the vet.

As far as the guy himself goes, I have *multiple* PTSD from different event and in person, you might not like me so much if some ‘trigger’ occurred while you were standing there.

I’m not “me” until the episode passes.

FWIW, knowing how draconian the TSA is nowadays, I’m not even sure if I could’ve reacted ‘normally’ and beat the hell out of whoever kicked my dog.

[which, thankfully, is a moot point since Odin would be perfectly capable of dealing swift retaliation, himself]

PTSD comes in many ‘flavors’ and there’s no one on earth who can say exactly how it’s going to manifest at any given time or for any given situation.

[it does, however, consistently, seriously -suck-]

I hear ya.

If I had a dime for every doctor’s report that included the loaded word “reactive”, I’d be rich.

Along with a patch on my vest that says “PTSD: Because not all wounds are visible” there’s another that says “Warning: Contents Under Pressure”.

I try to give people a humorous heads-up whenever possible.

The people that know me are careful not to push my buttons, bless their hearts.

I posted to the YouTube channel.

Hopefully, somebody will get the dog checked over soon if it hasn’t already been done.
