STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — The famed statue of Joe Paterno was taken down from outside the Penn State football stadium Sunday as the NCAA announced it would be issuing sanctions against the university whose top officials were accused in a scathing report of burying child sex abuse allegations against a now-convicted retired assistant.

Workers lifted the 7-foot-tall statue off its base and used a forklift to move it into Beaver Stadium as the 100 to 150 students watched, some chanting, "We are Penn State."

Don Giuseppi’s statue should have come down weeks ago.

Melt it down for scrap, and give the proceeds to some group that helps sexually abused boys.

On a lighter note, the statue was the silliest looking thing I’ve seen in quite some time. JP should be HAPPY they took it down.

PS — Check out the statue of George Mason at George Mason U. in VA. Go ahead, check it out. Is it just me, or are they trying to make George look like a homosexual swinger? It’s a disgrace.

Melt it. Sell the bronze for charity. Shatter the base into a thousand pieces.

Can't have someone digging up that statue. Ever.

The Paterno statue looked like he was running for a bus. The GM statue looks like he was dancing. Both blow.

How do you stick up for a coward who knowingly helped cover up facts about a gay pedophile predator who RAPED little boys?

Well, I’m glad you’re proud of the fact that a man was tried and convicted in the court of public opinion, instead of in a court of law, after his death without an opportunity to defend himself.

A man’s life work destroyed by his ignoring a pedophile.

It’s a damned shame but he knew he was wrong, he had to have known.

No football team is worth selling your integrity for.

Well said. Succintly, too. That GM statue is a horror. I guess a serious, deep-thinking, white, Christian, male has to be made to look like a kid from the Backstreet Boys.

Funny. Its always difficult when a cult-of-personality is finally declared bankrupt

The same thing played out (of course, on a larger scale) when Lenin’s statues were taken down.

“after his death without an opportunity to defend himself.”

And after he skirted any possible consequences from his inaction. I guess dying was easier than further abusing his power by killing all the witnesses.

Good riddance once more, JoPed.

Tear it all down and try again, Penn State.
