It is often noticed that motivation of the grinning psychopaths that open up on unarmed citizens is to be remembered in history.
It appears they have no concern for what punishment lies before them, even the threat of death -- then, or issued as a penalty -- is not enough to deter them, They only seem to want the fame.
What is the solution, then? Gun control is the answer the liberals come up with. Gun control, however, will not stop the grinning psychopath. They will find other ways. Chemicals can be bought and explosives made. Gasoline and proper placement of the fire can trap many dozens. A sword or machete can be used to kill more than a dozen trapped people, and they can be easily fashioned from strips of metal.
Further, let us consider that harming the rights of millions to stop the one or two a year that act out like this, is no solution. It is 'prior restraint', and it is not to be allowed in America.
So what is the solution?
Go to the grinning psychopaths' motivation. Deny them their place in history. Erase their name.
This idea was spawned by the movie '300', in which Xerxes threatens Leonides with annihilation, and banishment from history:
Xerxes, clearly enraged: "There will be no glory in your sacrifice. I will erase even the memory of Sparta from the histories. Every piece of Greek parchment shall be burned. Every Greek historian and every scribe shall have their eyes put out......and their tongues cut from their mouths. Why, uttering the very name of Sparta or Leonidas will be punishable by death! The world will never know you existed at all!!"
Do this punishment for these mass shooters, these grinning psychopaths. The minute their name is known, DO NOT announce it on the news. Refer to them only as Suspect Number (whatever). DO NOT record their name in history books or on Wikipedia or anywhere on the internet.
Banish them to obscurity. Forever.
This will require a great deal of restraint and a truly disciplined society, at least where this is concerned. The news media will need to cooperate. The police will need to cooperate. The good researchers on the internet will need to cooperate. The name will undoubtedly leak out, but if it does, even the common man will need to cooperate and not spread it further.
Deny them their place in history. Refer to them only as Suspect Number (whatever the number happens to be).
Will it stop them all? No. But it will stop a few... quite a few, I suspect.
Be of good cheer. If anyone will be able to recover this miscreant's name a hundred years from now I'll be suprised. Contrary to the crypto-anarchist manifestor and battle-cry that "Information wants to be free", anyone who is really paying attention will know that information really only wants to die. You can take a certain amount of comfort, good sir, in the fact that 500 years from now, our decendants will know more about our ancestors that lived 150 years ago than they will about us, who live in the middle of the "information age". Maintaining data integrity over the long haul is a seriosly tough proposition in the digital age. Who do you know with floppies that might as well be alien artifacts, given how much data they can actually still read from them.
Personally, I gain comfort from the fact that there is a damn good chance that 100 years from now, there will likely to be few, if any ways to tell Ieven existed on this planet. Then again, I might just be weird. Might have something to to with me having been at least somewhat one of those crypto-anarcists I mentioned previously.
The real solution to people attempting to commit mass murder is to stop them with overwhelming firepower after their first shot.
If you don't arm yourself with means of protecting you and yours, then you obviously don't care enough about you and yours.
Me, I wonder what those grinning, simpering faces would look like if they saw someone like me sighted in on their beady little eyes in front of them, and not a bunch of cowering victims. I suspect their bowels would quickly empty. Their fantasy is power over the powerless.
Kill the threat, do not worry about ways to make him less apt to attack. That would be for politicians to worry about, and we all know how useful they are.

Totally agree. Wouldn't stop 'em all, but it would a few I think. Good for the victims families as well. Unfortunately, it won't happen - but no doubt the easiest deterrent because it's after the fact and would make potential evil scum think twice.

this shows a problem with our society. He may not be an “evil man” rather an a-moral one, someone brought up with no sense of right or wrong and who did not get this from the society he grew up in.
Don't get me wrong -- he deserves the punishment he will get and he has no excuse -- he could have learned on his own (there are people who have grown up in evil and yet strived towards good), but I ALSO see this as an indictment against all of us for allowing our society to be like this
Damn it, you are smarter even than you seem. I have been up nights with a feeding tot thinking of answers. I even had a great, calm talk with a liberal friend who soon saw the reason why her precious gun control would not have worked. My brother still thinks that if we had more laws against weapons this guy would only have shot 10 instead of 70... But I never came up with an actual solution. We left it at detente; freedom means sometimes kooks abuse it and hurt others.
But you are right. Not sure that one could get away with forbidding the suspect from being spoken of, but if society agreed that naming and discussing the sicko is as disgusting as pedophilia, it would actually be a deterrent.
Punishment and even death don’t deter. They just want to be heinous and infamous.

An excellent solution to a lot of societal problems is shunning. The problem is that there is no way to achieve universal compliance in a huge and varied society.
When the Pilgrims colonized America, and towns were small, shunning worked like a charm because people were united, and everyone knew the reason for the shunning.
Now there are too many different opinions about practically everything to get universal compliance, and threats of jail or other punishment are too Brokko-bams-like to be tolerated in a free country.
You may have to settle for limited success if we ever try to implement this.

How about throwing the “producers” of these dysfunctioning morons into jail due to bad “quality control”?
How do the people responsible for raising such an amoral monster get a pass?
How about the parents, concerned for the greater society, get in touch with the cops to keep an eye out for strange behavior...no accusations, just a heads up...?
Lather, rinse, repeat and this issue becomes even more rare than it already is...
