More Americans want to protect their right to own guns

In the wake of the Colorado shooting, celebrities who tweeted about the need for tighter gun controls in the U.S. seem to be out of step with the majority of Americans who are more concerned with protecting their right to own guns, a trend that may be traced back to President Barack Obama’s ascension to the presidency in 2009.

Two people in that theater...two people with concealed carry permits and armed with their guns. There would have been far fewer victims, one more fatality, and one less trial.

The decades-old trend is reversing as more Americans realize that the problem isn’t with guns but with people who would do harm, regardless of the means.

Every weekend I see more people at the range. Young and old. Male and female. I see more first-time shooters in their 40s and 50s, people who swore off guns as “implements of war” who are asking me about rifles or pistols. I see kids eager to learn to shoot. This is all very heartening.

What I do not see are politicians who are listening to their constituents. Even in Liberal bastions such as Miami, I know people who proclaim that guns are on the minds and in the hands of many people who’ve previously sworn them off as violent crimes, gangs, and drug cartels are becoming more brazen. They don’t want to be stuck unarmed in the crossfire or during an attempt at their lives.

I pray this continues unabated. I pray that if, God forbid, the Feds try for a gun grab, people will rise up with a resounding “No!” and proclaim that anyone, law enforcement or otherwise, who try to take them will be met with unwilling participants to disarmament. This is the essence of America: fighting back against tyranny, even if that tyranny is on our own shores.

How’s that scheme you and Eric cooked up to “get people thinking about guns in an entirely different way” so you could implement gun control “under the radar” working out for ya, Barry?

Situations like this are going to lead more people to want more guns. Since the 1800’s what was the percentage of people killed with guns? As the population grew, each year, what was the percentage? Since we now have about 330 million people, will we not see more murders, percentage wise? Include in that, the media today, wanting to make a bigger deal out of it. I’m not saying we should make small of something like this. But when we look at Chicago, is not that city a lot more violent and nothing is being done about it?

a trend that may be traced back to President Barack Obama’s ascension to the presidency in 2009.

Gee, could it be a lack of trust of his demographic, or just pent up frustrations of all types of politicians?

That is extremely doubtful. The punk was protected by armor.
In many cases like this your comment would be entirely correct but not this one.

This poll is yet another policy rejection of Obama’s positions yet, other polls show he is close to re-election.
Somehow the People hate his ideas but are going to vote for him again? I don’t buy it.

It should read, ‘gun control losing support in U.S. BECAUSE of mass shootings’

Since the implementation of “Three Strikes and You Are Out” took many professional felons off the streets the crime/murder rates have fallen compared to historic levels.

“Since we now have about 330 million people, will we not see more murders, percentage wise?” I don’t think this is true if I understand what you are driving at. The absolute numbers of gun crimes has grown but I would think that the percentage has dropped.

Today’s 2012 movie theater shooting is yesterday’s 1982 Luby’s Cafeteria shooting.

Same crazies, different day.

In spite of his armor he surrendered imidiately when confronted by law enforcement. The last thing he wanted was a shootout, or to be shot at. Had there been even one armed citizen in that theater I believe it all would have ended more quickly with far fewer deaths.

That’s what I was trying to get at. We had the OK Corral back in the day, as well as others. This will always happen, as we had with Al Capone and so on. It’s not a perfect world and we do have nuts out there that will have to be dealt with.

Hey, I support gun control: I’ve got my Glock and Ruger under control, locked in my quick-access pistol safe :-)

Armor doesn’t protect everything. And you can certainly feel the hit through the armor. A couple of CCW holder could have made a difference.

Gimme a break! Have you ever actually had ANY firearms training?

Within the distances of where I sit in movie theatres, I could have put multiple hits in that freak's brain. Bang, bang, dead before he hit the floor.

Plus, so-called "body armor" is NOT reactive. A bullet hit causes enough pain to make you at least flinch, and probably fall over. Giving enough time to put a bullet or two in the brain pan for a finisher.

I don’t have a handgun permit, but it’s only because I refuse to pay several hundreds of dollars to exercise a right that should be guaranteed to me by the Constitution but isn’t. If it’s a right, then it should not cost me a cent other than the price of the firearm.
Charging for firearms licensing is no different than charging someone to vote.
