GLENDALE, Mo. – A suburban St. Louis woman with a history of depression bought a gun two days before she killed her two children and herself while her husband was in another part of the house, authorities said Friday.
Mitchell Murch II called police Monday to report that he heard shots. Police who responded found 42-year-old Catherine Murch in the kitchen, 10-year-old Mitchell Murch III elsewhere on the first floor and 8-year-old Mary Claire Murch on the second floor of the house the well-to-do suburb of Glendale.
Police questioned Mitchell Murch II but said they believed the case was a murder-suicide. Still, nearly two dozen investigators with the St. Louis Area Major Case Squad were assigned to the case.

He was supposedly reading in another room. He was the biggest threat to her carrying out her deed. He’s still alive and they are dead.
Women don’t normally use a gun to commit suicide and they don’t normally kill their children. This is a big stretch to rule it murder/suicide.

Regardless, had I heard a gunshot, knowing that my spouse and children were in the house, I would have checked on their security first rather than called the police first. Had I feared for their safety, a logical fear, I’d have gone to help or at least to make sure that they were safe rather than call the cops at the sound of gunshots. Now, had he immediately dialed 911 WHILE racing to see what had happened or was going on, then yeah, that might work, but it sounds a bit off to me as written.
I would say their own evil, desperation, and foolishness.
Dreadful. Poor kids. RIP.

I could be very, very wrong. I realize that women do horrible things as well. But, this case just sounds “weird” to me. I guess time will tell....

I'm inclined to agree with your skepticism. But if the husband was outside, or in the garage, and only heard the last shots, I could understand his not getting to her before she killed the second child and herself.
Most insurance companies have a time limit on the suicide thing. If you buy the insurance and then don't commit suicide over a specified length of time then you are free and clear on the suicide thing. Example: Most policies have a one or two year limit on suicide, if you commit suicide after that, they pay off anyway.
