CG Cutters I served on:

The US Coast Guard Cutter Taney, now preserved at the Baltimore Maritime Museum, is the only surviving warship afloat today from the December 7, 1941 Japanese attack at Pearl Harbor. The Cutter also participated in the battles of the North Atlantic and Okinawa, and served as a mission and gunfire support ship in Vietnam.

Coast Guard patrol boat in Vietnam. Five and seven day patrols at sea in all weather conditions were common. The cutter carried a crew of thirteen plus a Vietnamese interpreter which made for very cramped quarters.

I slept in TANEY berthing while the HAMILTON was in the yards in Baltimore. Taney was a training ship for steam propulsion plants in Baltimore, wasn’t it? I much later helped deliver BIBB (WHEC-31) out of New Bedford, MA to the salvage company as part of the post-decom crew. Then on to CHASE.

1991-pres. contractor with USCGA

Happy Birthday, The Coast Guard is great, it’s a shame they, like NASA, are the kings of affirmative action, I am so sick of how the government sees everyone as a hyphen!

You're saying they're more so than other government entities?

Ha! Probably slept in the same bunk, though 20 years later! My time was in the mid-1960's out of Alameda, CA.

I'm glad that at least one of the 327 ft. cutters got saved. A grand relic of the age of steam - trains and ships.
