Went to the local PO today, saw the flag at half-mast and asked the manager why. I was thinking, oh dear we have lost another good soldier to that abysmal war!

She hesitated then said that Obama had ordered the flag flown at half mast to honor the Sikh dead from the temple shooting on Sunday.

I was stunned.

Did we even fly the flags at half mast in 2009 when that Muslim psychiatrist shot our unarmed troops?

Examples of deceased citizens that might be honored with by lowering the Flag to half-staff include local religious leaders, youth leaders, honored teachers or sports coaches, local politicians, or a local hero. There need be no authorization from the government for the private sector (non-government) to use the Flag to honor any citizen. •

It is important to note that the Flag Code is a code, it is intended to provide guidance and is not obligatory. It carries no civil or criminal penalties for "misuse" of the Flag. Silly me - I thought that flying the U.S. Flag at half-staff was an honor reserved for principal figures of the U.S. Government. Now it seems that the Flag will be flown at half-staff for any victim of crime.

Just another example of our society failing to make the distinction between a hero and a victim.

Yes, we did fly the flag at half staff after the Fort Hood shootings. We also lowered them after the shootings in Aurora, Colorado.

FWIW, you can subscribe to halfstaff.org to get notifications of all current and recurring half staff events for both the national flag and your state flag. I check it every morning before I run my flags up the pole.

I wonder if the Sikhs fly the American Flag at their place of worship? This isn't meant to cast aspersions at them, as they appear to be good peaceful people. But I doubt it they fly the Red, White and Blue.

just saw a story on HLN (yes, I'm stuck at an airport) and apparently the leader of the congregation began flying an "elementary school" sized American Flag as soon as he moved into his home, so proud was he to be an American.

Sounds like the kind of immigrant we need more of.
