Good pick.
I’d admit of being excited when a few days ago Ryan emerged as the frontrunner. He’s less “boring” than most of the others on Romney’s list but he’s steady, articulate, qualified for the office without being all that more “risky” than say Portman who also would have been a solid choice. The too green (but perfectly eligible) Rubio would have been the “risk” pick.
He is a master debater and can TKO Biden in the veep debate. No Dan Quayle stuff.
Possible Negative points and counterpoints to those negative points
-Many have pointed out Ryan voted for x number of crappy GOPE bills. Buzzkill. But true. But of all the people on Romney’s shortlist he is arguably the most conservative and is one of (if not the) most reform-minded people in the GOP congressional leadership. He’d be a positive influence in a Romney administration.
-He’s Catholic and not evangelical, no Protestants on the ballot may miff some people who care about that sort of thing. But Catholic helps with Catholics who suddenly have a lock on the Vice Presidency ;p.
-If he stays in the House race as the WI law allows (and he MUST in case Romney loses) that will miff some freepers who really hated when Lieberman, Bentsen and LBJ stayed in their Senate races. But hey if it’s legal, why risk needlessly losing a good legislator. What’s good for the RAT is good for the elephant, we need to play by their rules.
-Mediscare: Whatever, I’m sick of hearing about BAIN BAIN BAIN even though contrary to the MSM I think BAIN BAIN BAIN is a losing strategy for Osama as real polls have the race tied or Glove slightly in front. Ryan is more articulate than almost anyone, he can hit back.
-He’s pretty much a “career politician” GASP. That’s A-OK with me if the politician is a good one. It also means he knows how to campaign and pass legislation.
-He is a Packer fan (biggest knock on him for me ;) ), but that will help him carry Wisconsin. I’d advise him to mention that Obama is Bear’s fan while campaigning in Wisconsin. I’m serious, that state is close (the dems trade cancer sticks to the homeless in exchange for votes there) and there are plenty of people dumb enough for that to make just a little bit of difference.
I’ll mention McDonnell who IIRC you GOPster thought would be the pick some weeks ago, he seems to have a nice style on the stump. Romney accidentally called Ryan the next “President” and Ryan missed the opportunity to zing him with “Well if you want to change places...”.
I say good idea, Ryan/McDonnell after Romney is abducted by aliens from Uranus.
Bottom line, no one to me is obviously a better choice and don’t see how this pick could hurt Romney’s chances unless mediscare is a much bigger deal than I think. Thank goodness he didn’t listen to Dick Morris and pick Rice a boring social moderate who smells like Bush.
Ferraro, Miller(64), Garner(Speaker) were the only 3 sitting House members nominated for VP in the 20th Century compared to upteen Senators.
Let’s all write a letter to the editor to remind seniors that it was Obamacare which slashed $500 billion from Medicare. Some seniors don’t listen to talk radio, but they do read editor’s letters.
Thanks Impy.
Ryan/McDonnell would be “da bomb”! I hope Big Bob has a prominent role in a Glove/Ryan administration; I find him to be very competent and yes, he has a nice style on the stump.

AMEN! And Rice-A-Roni would be a disaster because of the Bush connection, which is why I also never Portman being selected either.

Not to pat myself on the back, but I have been saying for years that Congressmen/women (amongst others including state AG’s and Lt. Gov.’s) should be looked at for national tickets. I was also calling for PR to run for POTUS ~3.5 years ago.
Good call.
I like your analysis, Impy, but have to differ with you on Rubio's constitutional eligibility (although, at least for now, it's a moot point). We know for a fact that both of Rubio's parents were not yet American citizens at the time he was born. Thus he is not a Natural Born Citizen, as the framers of the Constitution understood the meaning of that phrase.
We conservatives must insist on original meanings of every word and phrase in the Constitution, when known, or witness the reality of the erosion of the constitutional republic which is occurring right before our very eyes.
For the past three-quarters if a century, every VP nominee for the Dems or Republicans has been either a current or former governor, U.S. senator or high-ranking officer in the Executive Branch, with only three exceptions: Ferraro in 84, Shriver in 72 and Miller in 64 (I consider Director of the CIA, but not head if the Office of Economic Opportunity, a high-ranking Executive Branch officer). Those three tickets lost by the three biggest landslides of the past 75 years. Paul Ryan surely will end that curse.
I’m concerned about the Evangelical votes—Romney-Ryan will need a lot of surrogates to ensure a high turnout. Ryan also makes it, IMHO, harder for the ticket to carry OH, VA and FL than would have Portman. We need those three states, even if we carry WI and IA (which I think we now will carry).
The p240? They are definitely few, but persistent.
Thank you P-Dogg!
Thank you P-Dogg!
WAAAAAy toooo funny.
Ewwww...creepy!
I think Romney is going to win VA based on the fact that the GOP has done very well in NoVa since 2008. In Fact, a true conservative almost won the election for the 11th district in 2010. In 2009, Bob McDonnell won Fairfax Co. I am not saying Romeny will win Fairfax, but I believe he will hold his own. I do believe that Romney will win Loudon Co.
You have to keep in mind something about VA. In 2008 the GOP stayed home. Had McCain gotten the votes Bush got in 2004, McCain would have won VA.
I also believe that Romney will win FL.
LS can comment on OH. I think Ryan helps with the working class Catholics in OH.
I do know this: poll after poll shows an unknown Josh Mandel within four of Sherrod Brown for U.S. Senate. I think that tells us something of where the presidential race is, and it ain't pretty for Obama.
