Hawaii primary sets up rare contest for Senate seat

* Democrat Daniel Akaka, 86, is retiring from Senate

* Lingle is heavily favored to win Republican primary

* Republican has set up her own cable TV station

HONOLULU, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Voters in Hawaii went to the polls on Saturday in a primary expected to set up Republicans for their first real chance at a U.S. Senate seat in the heavily Democratic state since 1970.

A victory by former governor Linda Lingle, who has an early edge in fundraising, in President Barack Obama's home state could also help Republicans take control of the U.S. Senate as they battle for a net gain of four seats.

While analysts expect Lingle to easily win her Republican primary contest, U.S. Representative Mazie Hirono and former Congressman Ed Case are locked in what is seen as a closer contest on the Democratic side to contest the Senate seat.

I saw a GOP internal poll the other day showing Lingle leading Hirono.

The debate could win it for Lingle. She's very good.

Yes, some purists on FR won't like her because Lingle is moderate in some areas, but to have her in the Senate over Hirono would be 1000% better. BTW...Lingle is a good friend of Palin.

Idiots like the writer of this need to get it straight: Zero's home state is Illinoise, not Hawaii.

No one here claims the bastard that I have seen or heard. The only cars with bumper stickers for the turd are driven by angry old white people, not Hawaiians or Asians.

Personally, I'd rather have a RINO in HI (a liberal bastion) than a commie like Hirono.

Lingle pushed for the HI super-ferry and she vetoed gay marriage.

She speaks out in favor of business ALL THE TIME.

Hirono does none of this. Easy choice IMO.

Hawaii needs to be cut loose from the U.S. entirely. Cut a deal for the bases and leave them to their own devices. 4 Communist members from there, for which the 2 Senators can mean the difference between a majority and minority status has to end.

Lingle's not a communist. She's even a friend of Palin.

If you cut HI loose China will move in. Our bases won't be a whole lot of good on Chinese communist terrain.

Hell, the Red Chinese aren’t as Communist as American Democrats.

Whatever your opinion on Democrats, I still don’t think our military in HI would appreciate us leaving them on Chinese soil and allowing the Chinese to be that much closer to our mainland.

I’m curious under what scenario that by granting Hawaii independence that it instantly becomes a province of Red China.

It wouldn't be instant; but it would happen.

HI is too strategic a location for the large countries to not want it and HI is too weak politically to stand on its own.

With its expanding wealth, China is the most likely candidate to take it over.
