CORRALES, N.M. - A controversy emerged Tuesday night at the Corrales Village council meeting when the audience was asked to say the pledge of allegiance in Spanish.
The words in Spanish on a projector didn't help, and even after the mayor explained that it's a village tradition, the crowd defiantly said the pledge in English.
Corrales Mayor Phil Gasteyer said the incident was disrespectful, unfortunate and embarrassing.
"There was some disrespect shown to the village and its residents," Gasteyer said.
The mayor said he's never had a crowd challenge the Spanish language before.
He said it could have something to do with who was in the crowd, because many attended to voice their opposition to an open carry gun ban.

How can a city ban open carry when it is protected in the state constitution?
Uh, Mayor? That little wave lapping around your ankles? That’s the leading edge of a tsunami. Better head to higher ground, bud, because when it breaks, it’s too late to talk about it.
There never was a hyphenated American that was a good American.
IMO the big mistake was in naming the state New MEXICO in the first place. I say, after you finish throwing out the illegals and the disloyal citizens, hold a naming contest and give the place an American name.
A NATIVE American name, to be more precise.....like Geronimo or Cochise.....both names of authentic historical figures in their local history./Semi-Sarc.
Then maybe it was just English-speaking Americans asserting their rights for once.
New Mexico hasn’t belonged to Spain since 1821. Juan Carlos seems to be a decent man but there is no reason for people living in a town in the United States of America to pledge allegiance to the king of Spain.
” - - - and even after the mayor explained that it’s a village tradition, the crowd defiantly said the pledge in English.”
Obama made sure that Illegal Aliens are his tools to help him continue to destroy America when he signed his illegal Executive Order for backdoor amnesty for young illegals.
Now that Obama has made his evil intent crystal clear, we Americans need no longer tolerate illegal aliens.
Y’all had a long run living off of our Tax Dollar Welfare, and now it is time to git along home.
BTW, take your “village tradition” and put it where the Sun don’t shine.
Corrales is 27% Hispanic (68% non-Hispanic White) as of 2010.
The Village of Corrales is a small, treasured oasis located within a large, fast-growing metropolitan area. The Village is bordered on the east by the Rio Grande and, across the river, by the Sandia Indian Reservation. To the south is the City of Albuquerque while to the west and north is the City of Rio Rancho.
Actually is. I think I have read the New Mexico is the only state with two official languages. English and Spanish. It is part of their state constitution dating from 1912. But if âCorrales Mayor Phil Gasteyer said the incident was disrespectful, unfortunate and embarrassingâ maybe he should just bar the village residents from attending the public town council meetings.
Our money is not printed in Spanish. The Constitution is not printed in Spanish. The wars America fought, to win our independence, to preserve our freedom and to bring freedom to others weren’t won speaking Spanish.
To all of you out there. Really need to read your history. New Mexico was called this before Mexico was called Mexico. I was there at the meeting and I say the Pledge of Allegiance in English. English is what brings this country together and disapprove of this practice. Haven’t been to many of the meetings lately but will sure be attending more to correct this stupid idea. My family and relatives do not approve of this either. By the way, I am an AMERICAN with a Spanish last name.
“Theres nothing wrong with knowing other languages. I know several”
I speak Okie! :-)
Chicken fried, snooker, football, red beer.
As long as the words are right the language doesn’t matter.
Ha, ha, don’t forget “fittin’ to”, “panch” (what you do with your thumb and “forefanger” to get hold of some tobacco), and classic phrases, such as “here’s you a straw”. :-)
They must have been real lonely.
I speak a colorful dialect, too.
Pittsburghese.
Yinz can read all about it n’at here:

Now I gotta redd-up the hahs and take me my shahr before I go dahntahn to Primanny’s for a sammich and an Ahrn City....
Is the translation exact? That would be my biggest concern.
And no Chick-fil-a.
