Salvage firm finds the ship that took Scott on his ill-fated Antarctic expedition

The SS Terra Nova, the ship that carried Captain Robert Scott on his doomed expedition to the Antarctic a century ago, has been discovered off Greenland. It was discovered by a team from a US research company using a hi-tech underwater vehicle after they spotted an unusual object while testing their sonar equipment.

Scott and his party set off from Cardiff aboard the Terra Nova in 1910 with the aim of becoming the first expedition to reach the South Pole.

A crew from the Schmidt Ocean Institute discovered the Terra Nova whilst testing echo-sounding equipment aboard its flagship vessel - the R/V Falkor. One of the scientists noticed an unidentified feature during sonar mapping of the sea bed. Team members then noted that the 57m length of the feature matched the reported length of the Terra Nova.

Researchers then sent a remote camera called Shrimp to film the wreck. Camera tows across the top of the target showed the remains of a wooden wreck lying on the seabed. Footage from the Shrimp also identified a funnel lying next to the ship.

If the ship was trying to reach the South Pole, why did it sink off the coast of Greenland?

The Terra Nova figured in the rescue of Shackleton in 1904...

The “hero” had got his stupid self caught in the ise at the South Pole and had to be rescued...

He was feted in both New Zealand and England as a great explorer but the truth was a bit different...

Oh dear did I say that ???

LOL

The sailors were threaten to not speak to the press but they did spill the beans under assumed names......

The ship was used in 1910 to be the first to reach the South Pole. They were unsuccessful as someone reached it first. It was later used in WWII to carry supplies when it hit an iceberg and sank off Greenland in 1942. I’m not sure what is the significant of this discovery. Sounds like they’re making much to do about nothing.

Why? The ship conveyed Scott to Antarctica, dropped him and his team off, and left on other business.

According to the article, the ship sank 30 years later during World War II.

"... Scott on his ill-fated Antarctic expedition"

Ill-fated indeed. If not for the giant penguins, history might have been very different.
