Feds propose 1,200 sq. miles for jaguar habitat in S. AZz (and more in NM)

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing that 838,000 acres near the U.S.-Mexico border be designated as critical habitat for jaguars. While a small section of the proposed zone is in New Mexico, most of the land is in Southern Arizona, including the area of the proposed Rosemont Mine.

The move was hailed by the environmental group that has long worked for jaguar protection.

"Jaguars once roamed across the United States, from California to Louisiana, but have been virtually extinct here since the 1950s," said Kierán Suckling, executive director of the Tucson-based Center for Biological Diversity, which sued to push a recovery plan for jaguars.

The agency is set to publish its findings in the Federal Register on Monday, said spokesman Jeff Humphrey, which will trigger a 60-day public comment period.

The proposed critical habitat—outlined in a 126-page document—will help protect the jaguar, which was declared an endangered species in 1997, from extinction, Humphrey said.

While there have only been "a handful of jaguars seen (in Southern Arizona) in 50 years ... they are elusive cats," Humphrey said. There have been three confirmed jaguar sightings in the last five years, he said.

Jaguar habit extends through Mexico into Central and South America.

Kierán Suckling is a POS who’s sole purpose in life is to file lawsuits. He used to live near me. That being said, a number of years ago the wildlife biologists literally studied a jaguar to death. Granted it was an older cat, but they tranquilized it one too many times.

This is nothing more than Agenda 21 and trying to implement Dave Foreman’s wildlife corridor/island dream. Humans do not play a part in said dream as we are to be kept out unless you are ‘special’, that is, a libtard wildlife biologist.

That would definitely be a plus. But I was wondering whether Jaguars and our native Cougars coexist well? For instance, in Africa the Lions have decimated the Cheetah population down to danger levels. With the Left’s record of screwing things up, I would view this plan with considerable skepticism....unless it’s GUARANTEED to hold down the wetback population.

If anything you'll end up with more illegals. The cats will learn to avoid high traffic areas.

I think I read something in the 126 page document that this area will not require additional protection as it already is a wilderness area. Someone with more time maybe can find the reference.

What good would it do? Northern Mexico doesn’t protect these animals and any land set aside in the US will become “Hllrgal Habitat”. Make the Enviro Nazis clean up after the illegl invaders.

let us spend 100 trillion dollars to find the DNA for a Dodo bird and clone it!

We are idiots.

Sounds like another federal land grab to me.

Exactly. Reported that there have only been three confirmed jaguar sightings in the last five years. Apparently their thinking is to declare 1,200 square miles as habitat because they are so rare and there might be some more out there to be found.

My recollection is that the only evidence of jaguars in the U.S. are two photos taken of jaguars crossing the border at night by automatic cameras.

From this, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife projects a range of 1,200 sq. miles?

My guess is that, were it not for a Rosemont Mine, this proposal would never have seen the light of day.

Shutting down the mine -- and a future economic activity in this area -- is, of course, the objective. The current administration will approve the action. It will be up to the next administration to remove the absurdity.

Could you imagine the press, if this were the Fish and Wildlife Commission under G.W. making such a proposal?

RACIST - RACIST - RACIST would be what you would be hearing.

All kidding aside, the Federal and State governments already control far too much of our land without doing anything productive with it.

Agreed, and it ain't all out west. This map isn't high enough resolution to show the growing web of greenways and properties under the control of various land trusts.

Photobucket

Our "republican" governor just announced that they were buying 2000 acres right on the edge of my little town. Its part of $70 million in state and federal funds to buy land and other projects.

That’s a good point you make about what’s the effect of artificially introducing or increasing a species population in a specified area.

Of course, I was just being flip about the Jaguars and their potential role in deterring illegal immigration. This proposal has another purpose entirely and smells of a liberal/corrupt business land grab as others have alluded.

I do think most people who come here illegally just want a better life; but we, as a sovereign nation, have the right to control who comes in and who stays out. This is one of the most important functions of the Federal Government and it does this job very poorly. Instead the Federal Goverment, and to a lesser extent many of the State governments, do corrupt stuff like land grabs using Imminent Domain or by declaring them parks or endangered habitats. These officials must be reminded that there are consequences at the ballot box and must be forced to do the right thing.

WOW. You know, T-REX once roamed far and wide across this land. Perhaps we should use recombinant DNA and clone a few and let them go. If they eat folks oh well, At least we saved T-REX.
