Missouri Congressman Todd Akin, a conservative Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate, sparked a furor and earned a rebuke from Mitt Romneys campaign after saying in an interview broadcast Sunday that womens bodies can prevent pregnancies in a legitimate rape and that conception is rare in such cases.
Akin, a six-term congressman running against incumbent Democrat Sen. Claire McCaskill, was asked in an interview on St. Louis television station KTVI if he would support abortions for women who have been raped.
It seems to me first of all, from what I understand from doctors, thats really rare, Akin said. If its a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down, Akin said of a rape victims chances of becoming pregnant.
Rep. Akin will be a guest on the Charlie Brennan show at 9:20 am Monday to speak about his comments.

“What saddens me are Republicans now attacking Akin for telling the truth.”
So what is this magic organ inside the woman that rejects the sperm of a rapist? Is it some kind of physical flap or do her antibodies attack the sperm? I’m no expert on biology but I can’t find a reference to this anywhere.
Yes, a decent and sensible politician can refute the arguments you pointed out with logical thought, however Akin’s answer was beyond stupid by using both the term “legitimate” and then pointing out to this magical non-existant organ inside women that prevents pregnancy.
If you read their statement carefully, they don't have any evidence backing their statement up - it's pure speculation..."no one knows." Those particular claims are not footnoted, and as best I can tell, the sources cited do not specifically deal with women who are raped not becoming pregnant because they are "stressed." A problem is that the cited sources are not available on line, but their first reference deals with the sexual dysfunction of MEN that are rapists, based on the article abstract, and the second two sources deal with decisionmaking by women on abortion AFTER they are raped.
Yes, the guy does have a point when he discusses "legitimate rape" and implies that all claims of rape are not legitimate.
And the term "date rape" came into use about the same time as all the feminist nonsense about "no woman would make false claims of rape because the reporting and follow-up process is so traumatic". Forcible rape is forcible rape. Why do we need subcategories?
If subcategories are so important, why don't we talk about "stranger rape" and "teacher rape" and "marriage rape" and "gay rape" and quite a few others that could be named?
The term "date rape" has a political origin just as "undocumented immigrant" has a political origin. Both were made up for political purposes.
Pregnancy in situations of severe stress is rare, period.
Have you never known anyone who was trying to get pregnant where the doctor could find nothing wrong and simply advised her to relax and not be so stressed, and the pregnancy would happen? Do you believe all the doctors who offer such advice are guilty of malpractice?
*shaking my head*
Seeing previously unimagined levels of ignorance from you, stooping to any level to back an obviously flawed and now failed candidate.
It does seem reasonable, and is something I’ve heard repeated for years. I’m surprised there doesn’t seem to be any hard scientific confirmation of this “old wives tale” ...
Based on what? The only legitimate argument is that the men are less likely to successfully ejaculate in the violent encounter, which as more to do with the man than some magical vagina defense.
So i'll ask you as well - if you're on a jury in a rape case and the Defense made the argument that because the victim is pregant, that's enough reasonable doubt to suggest the woman is lying and the sex was consensual - do you at least consider that evidence? Would you bring that up in the jury room as evidence supporting the view that the defendant should be acquitted?
The only acceptable action is to leave — and now.
Good grief!! This is beyond stupid.
Okay, let me explain this to you real slowly so you can understand this.
Being raped will not stop a woman from becoming pregnant. If the rapist ejaculates inside the woman and the sperm reach an egg, if the conditions are right, that is she is in a stage of fertility that would make pregnancy possible during consensual sex, she WILL become pregnant.
There’s tens of thousands of women annually who end up pregnant as the result of rape, whether that is extreme physically-forced rape or “high-pressure” date rape is irrelevant, Akin basically came out and said that if you are a woman, and you get pregnant, it was impossible for it to have been as a result of rape, and by doing so, he put himself at odds with science and common sense.
He didn't say they didn't. He said it was "unlikely". Would 5% be considered "unlikely"??? It is subjective as to whether it would or not.
There isn’t because there’s tens of thousands of women annually in the US who get pregnant as a result of rape, there’s also a great deal of “rape babies” out there who were carried to full term and conceived even after a rape.
Get used to seeing the media drag out women that had gotten pregnant after being raped, over and over, and throwing that at the GOP in general thanks to this guy.
Question too hard for you???
You’re confusing long-term and short-term stress.
We should, by all means, talk about how many "legitimate rapes" and "consensual sex" rapes can dance on the head of a pin, instead talking about how the pinhead in the Offal Office is dancing his way through the economy minefield.
He's done, UC - stick a fork in him. They're doing the Palin thingee with him, changing the wording of what he said, etc.
He'll be a pinata from now until election day.
“Yes, the guy does have a point when he discusses “legitimate rape” and implies that all claims of rape are not legitimate.”
Exactly!
If its a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”
Translation-If you’re a woman and you got pregnancy as a result of rape, you’re lying or it wasn’t a “legitimate rape.”
I’m sure thousands of women will be glad to know that they’re either lying or they were doing some kinky-roleplaying games.
The issue here isn’t Democrats, since they wouldn’t have voted for him either—though he may have just upped the Democrat turnout a bit.
The issue is independents, who do have a deep suspicion that misogyny lurks in the GOP almost as often as it posts here to FR.
Your question has been asked and answered, counselor.
The Defense would first have to prove that the pregnancy came from the rape and that it was not part of the 5% exception.

They can actually replace him at this late date?
