That’s good. It would probably be better if they could do it right away, just for PR purposes.

“The somebody should be Jon Brunner, the second place primary finisher. If they pass over him, that’s a slap in the face to him and his supporters and he would probably be within his rights to mount a legal challenge. Don’t need that. The party needs to be united.”

The second-place finisher has no legal right to the nomination. The MO GOP could name whoever it wants and Brunner and Steelman can’t say boo.

If your main goal is party unity, then the replacement should be neither Brunner nor Steelman. But I think that if Steelman or Brunner is selected, the other candidate can be an adult, accept it and quickly endorse the replacement. Both Brunner and Steelman have a future in the MO GOP, and it would be stupid of them to be remembered as the sour-grapes ex-candidate who helped McCaskill get reelected.

It’s a mere excuse that others weather. The pro-abortion wing of the Republican party wants him out because he’s too pro-life.

I wonder if it is not too late for this guy to withdraw from the Senate race and instead run for his current seat in the House of Representatives where he may have a marginal chance of winning assuming no women live in his district.

Yeah, but making the correct choice, and having those who might feel slighted be on board when the announcement is made, is even more important IMHO. If it’s Brunner, I want Steelman standing next to him saying that she’ll work to defeat McCaskill, and vice versa if it’s Steelman. And if it’s a third choice, I want both Brunner and Steelman there saying that they support the nominee.

“We don’t need another Sharon Angle race.”

Or another Ken Buck race, a la Colorado 2010.

Earlier I posted about Akin:

“Sigh. A repeat of the disaster in Colorado in 2010, when that Tea Party favorite fool Ken Buck lost a sure Senate pickup against a weak candidate and a Democrat party divided by a divisive primary.

Buck simply could NOT keep his size 12 cowboy boots out of his mouth. Every time they got yanked out, why they instantly got sucked back in, as if boot and mouth were the opposite polls of a powerful magnet.

Buck clearly wouldn’t listen to his advisers, he could not stay on message, and he thought he was smarter than the press (which he wasn’t). Completely infuriating. I could have done better than Buck.

Buck at least had an excuse though: he’d never run for office beyond Weld County District Attorney. No such excuse for Akin.

Almost any Republican can win a contest in this country if the electorate isn’t completely dominated by leftist Progressives. Scott Brown in Massachusetts demonstrated that. Brown stayed on message. He had five talking points and never, ever deviated from them. No matter what question was asked, he answered with one or more of his five talking points. Not a single gaff or gotcha was incurred from Brown. Now really, how difficult is that strategy? Just sit in a room and practice that strategy with some pretend-reporters until you can do that in your sleep. Once you have that down pat, you’ll win your election.”

Apparently Akin just sent out a tweet saying he was still in and asking for money...

Looks like he’ll have to be forced out.

If he does withdraw I wonder if McCaskill will be kicking herself for spending a million dollars to engineer for herself a Republican opponent who was too dumb to even be able to stay in the race for 2 weeks. Oh, well,we all learn from our mistakes even if it was with someone else’s money.

I don’t think that Ann Wagner, the strongly pro-life Republican who handily won the primary to replace Akin in the House and who has raised almost $2 million, will be stepping down.

That would be good, but I wouldn't count on Steelman. She hasn't been a very good team player, and that's why she is not well liked in state Republican circles here in Missouri. But I hope, if a change is made (e.g., to Brunner, Bond, or Talent), and she's not the choice, that she would be supportive.

I disagree with this. If he leaves tomorrow, the impact from this becomes minimal. If he sticks around, the issue would be brought up constantly, over and over all the way to November. If he’s gone, the left will still try that same line of attack, but it will fall flat on its face.

Additionally, Republicans will be able to say “see, when our own screw up and act like total bufoons, we get rid of them, not hide them away like you do with crazy uncle Biden.”

You present yourself as someone who has been around a long time....well, if you have, then you know that the liberals will lie, insinuate, and extrapolate all sorts of false intimations from ANY statement...and you would also know the only way to defeat such crap is to FIGHT BACK, not retreat.

He is one of those liberals that.....

It will be the next conservative who says something unbelievably and indefensibly stupid, who costs us a Senate seat.

Yes, you are right. I went and read the statute.

But in the interest of fairness, the nomination should go to Brunner. If the nominating committee discounts the primary votes of those who went to the polls and/or lent financial and physical support to the candidates on the ballot, that would probably not sit well with the good folks in MO.

Who are you kidding??? If it worked here then it will work elsewhere because the pubbies are too weak willed to stick by their candidates.

No, we bedwetters prefer a conservative candidate that does not break his arms before he steps into the ring. You might want to bet on the fighter with the broken arms. I prefer betting on the one who does not self destruct before he throws the first punch. He needs to be dumped.
