Not much will move me to tears but this does, we had such hopes back then, it seems his death and our current situation ends it all.

Yeah, it saddened me too, it just seems like an end to an era. It's like the cartoon we see here often where JFK said "we are going to the Moon" while Bammy says, "I'm gonna build trains." Maybe the cartoon character, "The Tick," was right, "back then, science worked in broad stokes, not it is all molecule, molecule, molecule." B-)

But for some reason, this has really knocked me for a loop. I can’t quite explain it.

Me too. I heard it over the radio as I was driving, it took a lot to hold back most of the tears so I could still see. I'm still bummed about it. I know he was 82 and death is part of life plus old people do die, but still, it seems like we are losing contact with the past as time goes on. Same with the WWII generation, we are losing those guys and gals faster now. Already, the last WWI veteran died last year so we lost contact with that one.

Armstrong was duped into talking about all of “mankind” .AMERICA landed on the Moon. NOT MANKIND!!. IT IS OUR MOON. WE paid for it — they didn’t. How much did some afghan pay for our conquest of the moon. RIP Neil.

He was one of my heroes, since I was a child.

R.I.P. Neil Armstrong. May choirs of angels sing thee to thy rest.

For the entire history of man, they've looked up at the moon. From the time it was understood what the moon was, man has dreamed of going there.

The first person to fulfill that dream did so during my lifetime. That is one of the greatest achievements of all time.

God Bless Neil Armstrong, all of the people who put him on the moon, and all of his family and friends who are grieving now.

True.

In a way it is too bad he lived to see the Space program is tatters. Neil WAS American Exceptionalism!
When we start believing that again, we will invest in the space program and move back into the lead on this planet...

Not only did Neil Armstrong bring glory to the USA but also a great hope to the communism enslaved world that one small beautiful day the supremacy of the Free World would prevail over the Marxist evil empire. Neil Armstrong and his crew were like celestial harbingers of the Lord endowed with the power that even the communist television in Poland couldn't stand against and broadcast everything LIVE for a couple of hours. Empty streets, empty cities and villages - the entire Polish people in front of the TV screens, just overjoyed...

The triumphant Flag of the USA stuck to the surface of the moon was actually a nail stuck to the coffin of the Soviet empire.

Heartfelt prayers for Neil from Poland.
He always aimed at heaven, and he's finally there forever and ever.

He needs a state funeral, like a former president or other grandee.

I absolutely agree he should have a state funeral. I’m guessing it would not have been his preference but America should have the chance to honor him. Today our so called celebrities are people like the Kardashians or every other D list celebrity who has their own reality show. Yet Neil Armstrong remained a private man who never tried to cash in on his celebrity.

It’s amazing listening to the audio of the moon landing and how calm his voice was even though he and Buzz Aldrin had alarms they didn’t recognize, their fuel was running low and they had large boulders in their proposed landing field. I’ll always remember being glued to my TV set watching a man actually walk on the moon. I really thought we would have a man on Mars by now. It’s so sad what has happened to our manned space program. I really hope than when Romney is elected he reverses Obama and puts our manned space program back on track where it should be.

Maybe by having a large state funeral to honor this man, young people of today will also learn what it used to be like in this country when we dreamed big dreams. The technology we have today is far more advanced than what we used to go to the moon yet we can’t even put a man in orbit anymore. Kind of hard to believe.

It has been several decades since I read his book,”Carrying the Fire”, but I thought I remember his writing that he would have been mission commander on Apollo 5, had the Apollo 1 fire never happened.

Well speaking as a British subject, I’d like to claim a little piece of him too! He was of British ancestry after all. True enough, it was the USA that went to the moon - but look at the bigger picture here, this was one of mankind’s most amazing and enduring achievements. Awe inspiring.

RIP, Neil. You really were one of the last of the true American heroes. Humble and brilliant. Godspeed.

Neil Armstrong flew that rocket seven times! What a ride!

I'm glad you brought this X15 fact to the thread. I wonder if the kids of today know anything about the program. It's quite a story.

I loved the BOOK, the Right Stuff because it had the X-15 program in it. The movie didn't touch it. Those guys had real big, brass ones!

I turned my TV on this morning (8am) thinking Armstrong's death would be at least the #2 news story, if not #1.
I flipped between CNN, FOX, HLN, ABC etc., and much to my anger and surprise, not a one carried the story before they went to the first commercial break eight or nine minutes later.
My local Gannett rag even had the story buried on page 10.
I guarantee if Armstrong had been a member of any poooor minority group, his death would have been the lead story.

The news media has paid less attention to his passing than to Trayvon Martin’s death. The news channels today are a joke.
