Akin's own supporters want him to quit Mo. Senate race
The Washington Examiner's Washington Secrets ^ | August 25, 2012 | Paul Bedard

Posted on 08/25/2012 11:50:04 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan and the GOP establishment aren't the only ones who want Rep. Todd Akin out of the Missouri Senate race due to his controversial "legitimate rape" comments. A Missouri poll shows that even his best supporters, by a whopping 17 points, want him to drop out. Only Democrats want him to stay in the race.

According to a new St. Louis Post-Dispatch/News 4 poll, self-described Akin supporters want him to quit by a 50-34 margin. His image in the new poll is abysmal, with just 17 percent viewing him favorably and 56 unfavorably.

And the bottom line on his chances of beating Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, who he led comfortably before the scandal by five points is just as bad. He is currently nine points behind McCaskill, 50 percent to 41 percent.

The poll echoes a similar Rasmussen Report released Friday that showed a similar shift in the race that many analysts said was Akin's to win.

The poll reinforces efforts to convince Akin to drop out of the race. He has until September 25 to get his name off the ballot. Akin on Friday dismayed the GOP establishment by announce he was staying in the race. He suggested that he was going to run against the establishment, but even allies like conservative talk show hosts Mark Levin and Sean Hannity, as well as Romney and Ryan, have called on him to step down.

Anti-Akin forces Saturday were pointing to the fact that even Akin's own supporters want him out of the race and were hopeful that Akin would act on that finding.

An Akin associate, however, said that his campaign expects the furor to die down and that with the help of some new ads he will stage a comeback. And a key Washington conservative activist told Secrets that some conservatives are rallying around Akin and are upset that he's being left out to dry by the GOP presidential ticket.

Other details from the poll:

-- Women are running from him. While they were previously split between Akin and McCaskill, women now oppose him by almost 20 percent, 55 percent against to 37 percent for.

-- Republicans want him to withdraw, 47 percent to 37 percent.

-- Independents want him to withdraw, 57 percent to 25 percent.

-- Undecided voters, by a 67 percent to 16 percent margin, want him to withdraw.

-- Only Democrats support his candidacy. Some 47 percent want him to stay in the race, while 37 percent said he should withdraw.

Now philman, it seems to me we recently had an election where the ‘out party’ used the phrase ‘it’s the economy stupid’. THEY WON
Fact; rats did cross over to vote for TA.
Fact; He’s part of a Party. He ran under their banner. Women ARE running from him. If Repubs lose any votes in , say Ohio, and R&R lose.....well Iguess we’ll be better off because TA stood on ‘principle’.
Last I looked Blacks can still vote. Put female stats on your post.

And you've got evidence of this? Show me!

Fact; He’s part of a Party. He ran under their banner.
WOW! I did not know that. I had no idea whatsoever what that (R) behind his name meant. /extreme sarcasm

Last I looked Blacks can still vote.
Yep, they can still votes. And as the poll shows they overwhelmingly trend Democrat.

Put female stats on your post.
I can't edit posts already on the boards.
And don't tell me what to do. If the female stats are so important to you then you put up the female stats.

You can do that, can't you?

I’ll take Rush and FLee Levin words.
Check county figures in ‘Post-Dispatch’
Female stats aren’t any more important to me than Black stats are apparently to you.
They are what they are.
It’s the TOTALS that will matter. I know in your heart you know I’m right ;-)

Same reason too ~ guy was a Republican office holder and donated to Democrats. That sort of thing should be the end of one's career. This Akin guy did not object to Democrat funded ads on his behalf.

If the GOP-e wants to keep a place in the Republican party they'll have to start showing some brand name discipline or they'll lose everything ~ the party, the important factions, all the voters, the candidates.

12 losers in the last 70 years is 12 too many! We've only had 6 winners in that time under their authority! Then there's the 'me to ism' ~ just too much of that ~ gives the show away to the Democrats. Romney has already started to speak well of RombamakKKare ~ and that is certainly only the first of a wave of 'me to ism's. Democrats love that stuff ~ they know they can run a stuffed dog for office and beat a Republican who does that.

http://www.annwagner.com/ I have heard this name, who is running to replace Akin House seat, tossed around.

Ann Wagner would be a good replacement but she is set where she is. She is a lock-in for his old Congressional District, a sure thing that she will win without a fight. She would not trade that for this and I don't think anyone could blame her.

I have listened to discussions about viable replacement candidates and it is hard to come up with one especially at this late date.

Oh, I completely agree that the TOTALS are all that matter in the end.

I know in your heart you know I'm right in that the end hasn't arrived yet.

See, two can play that game.

And if he had objected what do you honestly think the reply to his objection would have been?

Surely you can "figure it out", can't you?
You keep positing it and I'll keep asking it.

And what do you think about the comments by McCaskill in the article I pinged you to last night from Aug 8, 2012 well before all of this started?

Doesn't it sound to you like she intended to damage him instead of help him?

Wagner can do a switcheroo with Akin and get on the ballot for Senator, and Akin get his old Congressional seat, but that takes Akin’s approval. I think he is a dead-ender and will not change his mind, though I hope he will.

I have to laugh at some of the people here who say they will “support” Akin. The only support Akin cares about is $$$, because all of the national PACs and Republican Committes have stopped spending anything on the race. The only exception is HuckPac, but I am not sure that is going to help very much.

I want to win the POWERBALL.

It amazes me that so many here are still talking theory. Philosophy. It matters little. Akin is the candidate. Until HE and only HE petitions the court to have his name removed from the ballot. Even then, it is not a done deal...

Akin will be giving ANOTHER apology-news-er soon — indicative that he is done for.

Everyone seems to know it but him.

When one has more Dem support than Indy and Pubbie combined, one should read the handwriting on the wall.

If Akin hangs on, Washington welcomes the return of Senator McCaskill.

Akin needs to face up to his ‘macaca’ moment. He stepped in it. Once that happened, he can’t unstep out of it.

Six more years of Claire, unless we can get a popular write-in candidate like Kit Bond, or James Talent.

A write-in candidate would only split the vote, allowing Claire McCaskill to cruise to another term. I can't think of a write-in candidate who would have enough appeal to win over the Akin supporters--and there are apparently a lot of them--who believe their candidate is getting a bum rap and resent the meddling by outsiders such as Ann Coulter, Sarah Palin and the GOP establishment.

The best thing to do is to call off the pile-on, accept Akin's apology and get behind him.

no, it doesn’t sound like mccaskill intended to damage him. she intended to damage the republican voting strength by keeping a strong conservative out of the race.
