Akin’s Support Craters in Missouri
Weekly Standard ^ | 8/26/12 | Fred Barnes

Posted on 08/26/2012 3:00:52 PM PDT by rhema

Support for Republican Todd Akin’s decision to stay in the Missouri Senate race has cratered and so has his favorability. Those findings come from two new polls conducted after Akin created a firestorm with his comment about “legitimate rape.”

Republicans, by a 47 percent to 37 percent margin, think he should drop out of the Senate contest against Democrat Claire McCaskill, and self-described Akin supporters believe the same by 50 percent to 34 percent, according to a Mason-Dixon survey. Only Democrats, sensing he’s likely to lose, want him to remain a candidate, 47 percent to 37 percent.

And in a poll for conservative groups, only 24 percent of Missouri voters looked favorably on Akin and 54 percent said they regard him unfavorably.

Before his rape comment two weeks ago, Akin had a solid lead over McCaskill. Republicans counted Missouri as a likely victory that would help them take control of the Senate. Now their chances look shaky.

While Romney did well in the poll for conservative organizations, leading President Obama in Missouri by 54 percent to 41 percent, Akin trailed McCaskill, 44 percent to 36 percent. A few weeks ago, he led by five percentage points. He was ahead by 11 percentage points among independents but now is 17 points behind. Independents, by 57 percent to 25 percent, want him to drop out.

Akin, however, has vowed to stay in the race. His freefall in the two polls will make that decision more difficult to defend.

Fortunately, it looks like this selfish loser won’t cost Romney the state. Although Rasmussen showed him down, it was only a point, and he’ll recover from the bad press Aken caused the past 10 days. Akin still needs to get out...although at this point, another candidate would still have to deal with his stench. This was a guaranteed win 2 weeks ago. A real shame.

Are these the same polls that many said were manipulated at first to keep him in? Does this mean they are now being manipulated to push him out?

He will lose MO and lost MO for Romney. It’s time to tell Huckerbee, Suckerbee, Buckerbee, Bumblebee, to stop supporting this idiot and have him withdraw from the race, now!

Right or wrong is one thing. Win or lose is another. If you can’t win, being right doesn’t mean anything.

No, the poll you're referring to is the PPP/Kos poll, which is as Leftie as it gets, and the results were clearly skewed to convince the gullible (Akin, Huckster, et al) that Akin should stay in.

The Mason-Dixon poll is quite reliable, and unfortunately, predicts a pretty easy reelection for Frau McCaskill. But hey, at least the Huckster's folks are happy!

What a plan. Abandon the good guy on the field of battle and complain that he will lose.

Lots of folks have their panties in a wad over Akin. Clairbell couldn’t win this state now if she was the only one on the ballot.

This was a guaranteed win 2 weeks ago. A real shame.

While that is the popular thought in GOP circles, there is no guaranteed win against McCasket and never was. She has the uncanny ability to survive sure defeats, to lie with believability, and to rise from the dead at election time to deceive the multitudes. This was always going to be a tough race.

But that's not the plan Akin followed. Instead, he did this: said something indefensible, gave two incoherent interviews to reinforce the idiocy, stayed in the race until it was too late to easily replace him with an equally conservative candidate who could win, and then complained about the GOP abandoning him.

Quite a plan!

I think you’re right. It’s only August, and voters have a short memory. I’m sure McCaskill will do something stupid between now and Election Day, too.

Jeses has completely nullified statements like this.

A week ago, Mark Levin said if he had his druthers Akin would drop out, but if he doesn’t, conservatives should support him. But alas, Akin decided to stay in the race and Levin has been against him ever since.

I still think he pulls it out because of the turnout to make sure OBozo is beaten. And those voters will vote for Akins over McCaskill because they’re not going to pass on a vote which would gaurantee McCaskill as a Senator.

It is a sad story. Todd Akin was about to become a U.S. Senator. It was his to lose. The polls favored him and all he had to do was stay alert, focused, disciplined and eternally thankful for the good fortune that fell into his lap.

Instead of realizing how fortuante he was that two better known candidates beat each other up, which allowed him to steal victory, he threw caution to the wind and gave a sloppy, incredibly stupid off-the-cuff answer to deadly serious question. Unbeliveable!

In an instant his crowning professional political ambition to become a U.S. Senator came crashing to a halt. The sheer speed of his fall and the extent of damage done to his campaign appears to be so overwhelming that he refuses to accept it. Deep down he must know he has fatally damaged his chances of ever defeating Senator Claire McCaskill but apparently he is still in denial and grasping at anything to salvage his candidacy and return to the place he was just a mere ten days ago.

It is a devastating personal tragedy for Todd Akin but one he brought upon himself. He has nobody to blame except himself and his own personal hubris and unwillingness to stay focused and disciplined.

We will soon learn what type of man Todd Akin really is. Is he big enough to accept the consequences of his own actions? Is he smart enough to realize he cannot lead or champion the causes he claims to hold so dear? When will he step aside and let another candidate that is not fatally damaged take up the charge against McCaskill and the liberals.

Todd, go out a winner. Do the right thing, the big thing, the courageous thing and let someone else lead the fight. Someone else that can win.

Hopefully we can replace Missouri's senate seat from somewhere else.

There are no good guys in politics. Only agendas. He shares our agenda but he's politically toxic. That means the opposition within our own party will paint us all toxic and 2014 will be for the RINOs what 2010 was for us.

NO man is worth allowing that happen.

This is about conservatism, not Akin or anybody else.
