Mann versus Steyn: popcorn time!
Telegraph (UK) ^ | August 27th, 2012 | James Delingpole

Posted on 08/28/2012 2:28:28 PM PDT by neverdem

Today I'm launching a fund and I wonder whether anyone would like to contribute. Please, I implore you all, PLEASE chip in to help finance Professor Michael Mann's suit for defamation against sinister, right-wing Canadian climate-change denier Mark Steyn and the fascist-denialist organ for which Steyn writes, National Review Online!

I don't think Mann is going to win his case, not for one fraction of a millisecond. That's why I think it's so important that we give him all the financial encouragement we can at this sensitive early stage.

There's a danger that Mann may yet take advice from his lawyers, realise that there's about as much chance of his defending the integrity of his ludicrous, comedy "Hockey Stick" curve as there is of George Galloway winning the Random Stranger I'd Feel Most Safe Sharing A Bed With While Completely Fast Asleep award (as annually voted by the readers of Mumsnet) – and pull out.

This must not be allowed to happen.

From obscure beginnings and with little discernible talent, Michael Mann has risen to become arguably the best loved comedy figure in the entire field of climate science, like Fatty Arbuckle, Pee Wee Herman and Coco the Clown rolled into one.

He singlehandedly invented Mann-made global warming using his amazing Hockey Stick curve – the one programmed using the ingenious algorithm whereby, whatever information you fed into it – fudged paleoclimatological reconstructions, the latest football scores, tofu futures – it always came out in the same, scary-looking This Is The End Of The World And We've Got To Act Now By Pumping Gazillions More Money Into Climate Research shape.

He gave us the phrase "Hide The Decline" – and starred in the hilarious song and video written in homage by a fan club called Minnesotans For Global Warming.

He...

I’m a Yank, and I can instantly detect irony and sarcasm by reading the by-line “James Delingpole”.

BTW, Yanks are more sparing and lest practiced in these high arts, so when I read an American author I must often strain to tell whether or not he is serious. With Delingpole, not so much. (Mark Twain was the master of the form, and he pulled it off with such subtly at times that it dawns on one slowly like the glow that overcomes one when sipping slowly on a fine sherry.)

That is a very funny column. I wonder if we should all give to both sides, just $2 to the defense for every $1 for the plaintiff. Certainly there will be high entertainment value from this.

Steyn would get a tremendous amount of satisfaction out of the discovery process

Reason why this threatened lawsuit will not go forward. Mann has been hiding fraudulent data ever since his Virginia days.

Ah. I remember reading an article by Simon Pegg (of ‘Hot Fuzz’ and ‘Shaun of the Dead’ fame) who wrote that generally speaking, Americans do ‘get’ irony when they expect it (such as watching a comedy), but not so much when they don’t. So, if you use an ironic statement in a non-sarcastic tone of voice whilst having a casual conversation with a friend in the US, it is more likely to be taken literally (as in when my mum when she was fed up with us told a friend in the US she felt like giving us 50c and telling us to go and play in the road, which apparently sparked a somewhat nervous response!)

I wish him success in convincing Mann to sue, but it’ll never happen.

Mann is already involved with 2 lawsuits regarding his work and data. He has stalled them both. He just likes to be able to tweet he sued them or is suing them or they are suing me. That is all he wants. The vast majority of leftists academics are half wits that think they are geniuses. They actually think Marxism is intelligent.

Mann has a similar lawsuit against Prof Bell of Canada, and Mann is not producing documents. It sounds like it is going badly for Mann. He may have to withdraw and have to pay all legal costs.

It should get interesting.

His Tree-Ring Circus was goofy and I am surprised that his flimsy work is supposedly the pillar of the global warming claim. That is frightening! He cherry picked a few tree rings in Siberia and then manipulated the data to create the hockey stick. He also denies the Middle Age Warming Period, except that is has been proven yet again in a new study by Syracuse University. Mann is more a PR guy than anything else.

Mann is a liar and a fraud. He is behind the “hockey stick” global warming theory that has been shown to be fraudulent by both other researchers and the leaked emails from global warmers.

I would love to see him lose every penny he has and be disgraced.

I’m sure that’s true, but it’s not James Delingpole. He might have a crush on Mark Steyn, though, in a strictly intellectual way ...

I like Steyn’s cute beard, but his up-north voice puts me off.
