Mann versus Steyn: popcorn time!
Telegraph (UK) ^ | August 27th, 2012 | James Delingpole

Posted on 08/28/2012 2:28:28 PM PDT by neverdem

Today I'm launching a fund and I wonder whether anyone would like to contribute. Please, I implore you all, PLEASE chip in to help finance Professor Michael Mann's suit for defamation against sinister, right-wing Canadian climate-change denier Mark Steyn and the fascist-denialist organ for which Steyn writes, National Review Online!

I don't think Mann is going to win his case, not for one fraction of a millisecond. That's why I think it's so important that we give him all the financial encouragement we can at this sensitive early stage.

There's a danger that Mann may yet take advice from his lawyers, realise that there's about as much chance of his defending the integrity of his ludicrous, comedy "Hockey Stick" curve as there is of George Galloway winning the Random Stranger I'd Feel Most Safe Sharing A Bed With While Completely Fast Asleep award (as annually voted by the readers of Mumsnet) – and pull out.

This must not be allowed to happen.

From obscure beginnings and with little discernible talent, Michael Mann has risen to become arguably the best loved comedy figure in the entire field of climate science, like Fatty Arbuckle, Pee Wee Herman and Coco the Clown rolled into one.

He singlehandedly invented Mann-made global warming using his amazing Hockey Stick curve – the one programmed using the ingenious algorithm whereby, whatever information you fed into it – fudged paleoclimatological reconstructions, the latest football scores, tofu futures – it always came out in the same, scary-looking This Is The End Of The World And We've Got To Act Now By Pumping Gazillions More Money Into Climate Research shape.

He gave us the phrase "Hide The Decline" – and starred in the hilarious song and video written in homage by a fan club called Minnesotans For Global Warming.

He...

He's advocating for money to help someone litigate a "defamation of character" suit while throwing EVERY slur and exaggeration he can to slimy up the target (fascist? REALLY? Commutards rejoice).

I’m seriously considering purchasing stock in popcorn. :D I’d love to see Mann put on the hot seat and forced to actually defend that excretion he calls a scientific fact.

Basically, he’s a British comic asking people to help convince his major source of comedic material and target of ridicule to not cut his career short, so that this comic will be able to pillory the guy further.

When someone sues you the purpose is not truth but rather intimidation. It is to create fear. It is to instill fear of losing everything and fear of the complexities downright stupidity of the legal system.

Defending oneself against even a totally meritless lawsuit is an enormous burden.

While that's all too true, I'd be willing to bet that Steyn would get a tremendous amount of satisfaction out of the discovery process. (Mann, meanwhile, would be crapping his pants.)

You can measure how outclassed someone is, by counting the adjectives they use to describe their rivals.

James Delingpole is a brilliant right-wing writer (as is Mark Steyn). This "plea" for money is sarcasm!

Delingpole constantly mocks the globalist loons that promote man-made global warming (such as Michael Mann).

That's why, with tongue in cheek, he's asking that we "support" Michael Mann so Mann can get his ass whupped in a debate with Steyn.

Hope that clears up things.

In the last 3 years Steyn pretty much singlehandedly destroyed the Canadian hate crimes prosecution system.

He shouldn’t have too much trouble with Mann.

“I’d be willing to bet that Steyn would get a tremendous amount of satisfaction out of the discovery process. (Mann, meanwhile, would be crapping his pants.)”

You assume our legal system is honest and concerned with the pursuit of truth and justice. If that were the case Mann would have never filed his lawsuit.

Our legal system is corrupt. It is a tool for bad people to intimidate and extort money from good people.

But I would love to see glogal warming slimeballs like Mann put under oath and be forced to answer questions about their fraudulent studies.

Mann will never man-up. This is all bluster. Mann's work is corrupt and fraudulent, and as such, indefensible.

By the way, Mann still hasn't responded to freedom-of-information requests regarding his "work."

I would love to see him take on Steyn. Not going to happen.

He is, as we British like to say, taking the Mickey. His sympathies are pretty obviously with Steyn, and not Mann. I’m told Americans have a tougher time detecting the use of irony...

I recognized the author so it wasn’t difficult to realize he was being ironic...not knowing the author nor reading the whole piece is a handicap.
