Todd Akin Is Not a Victim
The Wall Street Journal ^ | August 28, 2012 | The Wall Street Journal

Posted on 08/29/2012 3:00:11 AM PDT by sheikdetailfeather

Missouri Republican Todd Akin is vowing to continue his Senate campaign, though the question increasingly is: to what purpose? His continuing candidacy is harming the social-conservative wing of the GOP that he claims to be defending.

Mitt Romney and other Republican officials sensibly disavowed the Congressman after his recent comment that "legitimate rape" can be a contraceptive. For Mr. Romney, this was something of a Sister Souljah moment—not that he's getting much media credit for it. But rather than leave the race to another Republican who might be able to win, Mr. Akin has since cast himself as a pro-life martyr. He's blaming "party bosses" who he claims don't really care about the sanctity of life the way he does.

He's also received some unfortunate cover from Mike Huckabee, the talk show host and former Arkansas Governor, who wrote in an email to supporters: "Is this what the party really thinks of principled pro-life advocates? Do we forgive and forget the verbal gaffes of Republicans who are 'conveniently pro-life' for political advantage, but crucify one who truly believes that every life is sacred?"

Let’s forget it. It’s not worth pursuing.

Ageed.

“tell us all why the only abortion clinics in the state of Missouri are over in Illinois and Kansas.”

What?

That doesn’t make sense. The only abortion clinics in the state of MO are in Illinois and Kansas? Are you saying that there are no abortion clinics in Missouri?

I know there is a very big one in St Louis, which I have marched in front of.

Exactly. That’s why I asked Uncle Chip to clarify his statement, because if he’s saying there are no abortion clinics in Missouri he’s mistaken.

That doesn’t make sense.

It does when you realize that most of the Missouri legislature is prolife and that includes a whole lot of Democrats.

I didn't think there is one in St Louis anymore. I thought they all went over to the one in Granite City.

Is it true that Akins people were trying to pull off the stunt described above or not?

Irrelevant. The RNC hammer is coming down on the Tea Party. Religious conservatives have never been welcome.

This whole thing with delegates is stupid anyway...

If you mean it, that is jaw-dropping dangerous assertion. It is a convention and still not a coronation.

Is it not clear the GOPe prefers the lunatic McCaskill over the conservative Akin?

Don't lose sight of the fact that in the primary the majority of Missouri Republicans preferred someone other than Akin.

Akin is not a victim. He is not being roasted for no reason. He is paying a price for his actions. And if he loses the election this November it'll because his series of bone-headed remarks and no other reason.

There will be two candidates on the Missouri ballot, a conservative and a psycho. Pick one.

Yes or No is easier to spell and type out. Which is it?

No, if he loses it will be due to the oh so moralistic purveyors of deep thoughts who think we can win the war for our republic via retreat. Akin is in. Support him.

Why does it bother you one way or the other? Got a problem with religious conservatives?

And don't lose sight of the fact that those same Missouri Republicans are united in preferring the one with the "R" by their name over the alternative.

Nope. I have a problem with those helping democrats into office.

Got a problem with keeping the democrat party out the of business of making laws?

Which will do him no good if he keeps alienating independents and those Democrats who aren't thrilled with McCaskill and Obama.

Well you were mistaken. There are multiple abortion clinics in the state of Missouri. You implied there were none. That is false.
