Akin’s Options
The National Review ^ | August 29, 2012 | John Fund

Posted on 08/29/2012 11:44:29 AM PDT by Cincinatus' Wife

............[Mary Matalin]urged that Akin drop out, to be replaced by Ann Wagner, a former co-chair of the RepublicanNationalCommittee, who is the GOP nominee for Akin’s vacant House seat.

Akin “may be dug in, but he’s not going to have a shovel to continuing digging, because he’s not going to have any money,” Matalin told ABC. “We’re going to win Missouri. Ann Wagner is going to end up being our candidate. The party is going to get Ann Wagner in.”

Wagner aides hotly dispute that their candidate is involved in any negotiations about switching races. But sources close to Akin acknowledge that he is monitoring developments in the race, including campaign donations and his standing in the polls, and that it isn’t out of the question he will change his mind.

Should Akin decide that his sliding poll numbers — he now trails McCaskill by ten points and many of his own supporters want him to exit the race — dictate dropping out, he will certainly want a say in who replaces him. John Brunner, a wealthy businessman, and Sarah Steelman, a former state treasurer, both challenged him in the GOP primary and are viewed as unacceptable by Akin forces. On the other hand, Wagner is respected in the Akin camp and a sufficiently conservative presence to satisfy Tea Party members who are suspicious of anyone the Missouri GOP establishment might anoint.

Should Akin leave the race and be replaced by Wagner, both candidates would have to petition a court to get off the ballot before September 25. But state election laws would allow a swap in which Wagner took Akin’s place and he reclaimed the Republican nomination for his House seat. His current district leans strongly Republican; he would be likely to hold it against a Democratic opponent this fall...........

That being said, he's likely going to lose anyways. It's all but inevitable.

Not true.

LearJet Claire is tied at the hip to Ubama, and she's going down with him.

I don't foresee very many people voting for Romney, then voting for Claire.

That ain't happening.

based upon more I hear about Akin, even if he loses we win - he is out of congress!!

Gee, I guess that 100% conservative rating and 100% from the NRA and GOA is just a joke, then?

I guess you prefer smooth-talkers who talk big and then do whatever they please.

"Wagner aides hotly dispute that their candidate is involved in any negotiations about switching races."

How many times does a Congressmum-to-be have to say "NO" to other suitors before she will be taken seriously???

You know what, Todd, in the real world, if you get fired, you don’t get to pick your replacement.

He hasn't been fired. He is teh nominee, and the only one who can fire him from that is Todd Akin. That gives him leverage. People in the real world with contracts and no-trade clauses do similar.

If we could fire a nominee, we should start with Romney.

Yes, I do have an agenda. I want to see McCaskill out of a job. Akin is the more conservative candidate, and I resist those who maliciously and ignorantly attack him.

So, yes, I have an agenda. And, as you can see, I’m pretty passionate about it.

No, the commenter wasn't merely "questioning" the polling results. He was a priori assuming they were false because they're associated with a pro-life Christian ministry.

His first reaction was to be snide, not to take heart that McCaskill isn't a shoo-in.

If Akin loses, it will be due to Priebus Republicans . . . like you.

Yes...Akin needs to man up and get out.

But Romney, who 2/3 of us didn’t want or wasn’t our 2,3 or even 4th choice we are all suppose to get behind.
Even though we do not agree with a lot of his policies and so forth.
Why isn’t the same for Akins? Suck it up and vote for him because the alternative is Democrat whats her face will win.

Kind of weird how it all works inconsistently...?

The first date was for a ‘Clean Drop’. He can still drop by Sept 25, but new candidate will have to pay for reprinting of the ballots and petition fees, etc.

Do hope we can save this seat. I wonder how many RATs voted for Akin in the FRC poll.

Oh yes...very weird. And, let me be clear (as the Clown likes to say)...if Akin stays in, repubs should all vote for him. I just think we have a better chance if one of the pro-life, Mizzou GOP women replaces him.

Well, when Rick Santorum said he had “taken one for the team” several times in the past, he was reviled on this very forum. Santorum should be the nominee, but a foolish split in conservative ransk produced the inevitable Romney nomination.

In the real world, if you do something really stupid and the people who pay your way tell you to find something else to do and cut off your money, you can call it what you want, but I call it getting fired.

Bzzzzt. He doesn’t work for the Washington D.C. GOP establishment, he works for the people of Missouri. If the voters of Missouri stop sending donations to the RNC, then hopefully some of them will have to get fired.

I’m not sure what your problem is, but with “friends” such as yourself, Akin sure doesn’t need enemies. I look at your recent posting history and see you conducting an unending jihad against your fellow FReepers in the guise of an Akin supporter.

Perhaps you’ve just forgotten to take your meds the last few days.

The whole Akin blowup has been an eye opener for me. I believe the majority of Freepers don’t give a crap about social issues and actually align with the democrats.
