Obama tells Americans: You are 'absolutely better off' than you were four years ago

A defiant President Barack Obama today told Americans that they are ‘absolutely better off’ than they were when he was sworn into office in January 2009.

The question ‘are you better off than you were four years ago’, famously posed by Ronald Reagan in 1980, has dogged the Obama campaign over the past week as aides have responded ‘no, but’ or dodged the issue entirely.

‘We are absolutely better off than we were when I was sworn in and we had 800,000 jobs beoinmg lost in a month,’ he said in an interview with NBC12 in Virginia.

The Romney campaign has been goading Obama on the issue, printing 'Are you better off?' signs and stickers and making it their main line of attack during the Democratic convention.

A repub would be CRUCIFIED for this. Remember McCain merely saying that “the fundamentals of the Amer. economy are strong,” back when unemployment was 5 or 6%? He was butchered for it.

300% inflation in your energy costs, personal income down 10%, Unemployment stuck over 8% for 42 months, 1/3 increase in the national debt in the last 4 years, 40% across the board inflation in the prices on groceries etc etc etc

You most certainly are NOT better off. HE and his cronies may be, you and your family are not.

I think they've decided to write off the normal, productive people and go for broke. They've expanded the dependent class as much as they can in four years, they're going to try to ride that demographic to victory. They'll get huge help from fraud, from the default media, and from useful idiots in academia.

It's the only strategy they've got.

Let’s see.... 4 years ago I was making 30% more than I am today. I have lost 2 jobs due to cutbacks since Obama came to office (and started 2 new ones). My personal debt went from only a Mortgage to a line of credit and one maxed credit card. I have spent time on unemployment and started a business since Obama has been in office just to survive. My retirement plan is has $20K less in it than when Obama took office. My current employer provided health insurance premiums have gone up since Obama was annointed. My industry is boasting a 15% unemployment rate locally and 12% nationally (Construction at last check).

I’d say NO! Things are about 20% worse for me and my family today than when Obama and his CHUME GANG took over as King of America.

Obama tells Americans: You are ‘absolutely better off’ than you were four years ago”

Really? You have to TELL us we are?

It is either obvious or we are not better off!
we are not stupid. We can look all around us and see the conditions that are nowhere near what they were in actual good times.

We can look back on the 50s, the 80’s, the late 90s and the 2000s to know what good times were like.

Is anyone looking at today and feeling economically secure as a matter of fact? Do you feel like if you lost your job today, finding a new one would just be a couple of weeks and a few cover letters? Are you able to put real money away in savings? Are you able to pay off your debts? Will your kids be able to get a decent job after college or are they still in your basement? Can you retire? Is any business expanding rapidly in your town?

Quite fooling yourself. This is NOT better off. This is entrenched malaise. This is no recovery. This is a fraud from the top down. A presidential clown trying to make you believe the shadow puppet on the wall is a real rabbit when we all know it’s just a light trick.

And oddly enough, I remember Clinton saying something many years ago in a speech:

“Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.”

Try to avoid the 2nd part, America.

Well, there is that reliance on "Divine Providence," "Nature's God," "Creator," and "Supreme Judge of the World," as asserted and celebrated by America's Declaration of Independence from government's regulation, taxation and oversight in 1776 by King George III.

Then, there is this assertion of some common dependency on government, as declared by so-called "progressives" Clinton, Obama, and their "believers."

Which view leads to individual freedom, opportunity, prosperity and plenty?

Will we take the words of two arrogant and defiant 20th Century men whose philosophy sounds more Marxian than Jeffersonian?

Or, will we take the 200+-year history of American liberty under a "People's" Constitution to limit the potential misuse of power by such men over their fellow citizens?

In a recent interview with Charlie Rose (CBS), the current President, responding to a question regarding what he might have done differently: “The nature of this office is … to tell a story to the American people that gives them a sense of unity and purpose and optimism,” not just “to [think] about getting the policy right” said President Obama.

To the youth of America: please contrast that silly statement from the current President with a truly meaningful one from one of your nation's former Presidents whose intelligence, accomplishments, and renown as Author of our Declaration of Independence qualify him to concisely describe the role of an American President:

In his own words:

1801 Inaugural Address of Thomas Jefferson

(Excerpt) "Let us, then, with courage and confidence pursue our own Federal and Republican principles, our attachment to union and representative government. . . possessing a chosen country, with room enough for our descendants to the thousandth and thousandth generation; entertaining a due sense of our equal right to the use of our own faculties, to the acquisitions of our own industry, to honor and confidence from our fellow-citizens, resulting not from birth, but from our actions and their sense of them; enlightened by a benign religion, professed, indeed, and practiced in various forms, yet all of them inculcating honesty, truth, temperance, gratitude, and the love of man; acknowledging and adoring an overruling Providence, which by all its dispensations proves that it delights in the happiness of man here and his greater happiness hereafter—with all these blessings, what more is necessary to make us a happy and a prosperous people?

"Still one thing more, fellow-citizens—a wise and frugal Government, which shall restrain men from injuring one another, shall leave them otherwise free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned. This is the sum of good government, and this is necessary to close the circle of our felicities.

"About to enter, fellow-citizens, on the exercise of duties which comprehend everything dear and valuable to you, it is proper you should understand what I deem the essential principles of our Government, and consequently those which ought to shape its Administration. I will compress them within the narrowest compass they will bear, stating the general principle, but not all its limitations.
= Equal and exact justice to all men, of whatever state or persuasion, religious or political;
- peace, commerce, and honest friendship with all nations, entangling alliances with none;
- the support of the State governments in all their rights, as the most competent administrations for our domestic concerns and the surest bulwarks against antirepublican tendencies;
- the preservation of the General Government in its whole constitutional vigor, as the sheet anchor of our peace at home and safety abroad;
- a jealous care of the right of election by the people—a mild and safe corrective of abuses which are lopped by the sword of revolution where peaceable remedies are unprovided;
- absolute acquiescence in the decisions of the majority, the vital principle of republics, from which is no appeal but to force, the vital principle and immediate parent of despotism;
- a well disciplined militia, our best reliance in peace and for the first moments of war, till regulars may relieve them;
- the supremacy of the civil over the military authority;
- economy in the public expense, that labor may be lightly burthened;
- the honest payment of our debts and sacred preservation of the public faith;
- encouragement of agriculture, and of commerce as its handmaid;
- the diffusion of information and arraignment of all abuses at the bar of the public reason;
- freedom of religion;
- freedom of the press, and freedom of person under the protection of the habeas corpus, and
- trial by juries impartially selected.
These principles form the bright constellation which has gone before us and guided our steps through an age of revolution and reformation. The wisdom of our sages and blood of our heroes have been devoted to their attainment. They should be the creed of our political faith, the text of civic instruction, the touchstone by which to try the services of those we trust; and should we wander from them in moments of error or of alarm, let us hasten to retrace our steps and to regain the road which alone leads to peace, liberty, and safety."
- Thomas Jefferson

WHEW! I’m so glad to hear our fearless leader tell us I am better off than I was 4 years ago.

That means my company that employes me must not be in bankruptcy (but everyone else says it is), unemployment isn’t higher (my wife still looking for a job), gas prices aren’t draining my bank accounts and retirement (But it is)...

I am so glad that I must be just imagining that it isn’t so...

I am definitely better off than I was four years ago: I met and married a wonderful woman.

However, Obama had nothing to do with that.

Economically, we are hanging on. If this malaise continues, we might have to put off some future plans. I am hoping that a Romney/Ryan administration and a Republican Congress will put us back on a pro-growth track.

A defiant President Barack Obama today told Americans that they are ‘absolutely better off’ than they were when he was sworn into office in January 2009.

I wonder what criteria President Obama is using to report that we are absolutely better off? He might be correct for those items. I suspect that the price of gasoline is not among the items.

However, his statement reminds me of Iraqi Information Minister Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf who said on April 7, 2003:

"The infidels are committing suicide by the hundreds on the gates of Baghdad... Be assured, Baghdad is safe, protected. Iraqis are heroes."

Baghdad fell on April 9, 2003.
