Inside the US consulate in Benghazi: material and human damage laid bare

The bullet holes, smashed masonry and blood on the walls of the burned-out consulate on the southern outskirts of Benghazi are testament to the gun battle that raged through the building, claiming four lives including that of the US ambassador, Chris Stevens.

As the owners of the damaged building and the accommodation block a mile down the road took the Guardian on a tour of the sites on Thursday, reports that the attack was the work of an isolated group seemed to be at odds with the physical evidence and what their staff had told them.

"Better security would not have stopped this," said Adel Ibrahim, the owner of the accommodation building where blood is now spattered beneath a hole smashed in a wall by a heavy projectile. "A security unit is fine if you are facing 10 persons, but there were 400 attackers. [The Americans] would have needed an army to stop them."

“There is also unease about how America will react. It has not had an ambassador killed since 1979, and President Barack Obama’s vow that “justice will be served” has fuelled rumours that US marines now deployed in Tripoli will head to Benghazi and take action.”

That’s a silly worry - if only they knew Dumb’O the way we know Dumb’O.

Better security would not have stopped this but 48 hours notice would probably have.

Actually, it means Obama will bankrupt a few more privately owned American businesses.

Even without notice two marines that are properly armed could have wiped out a lot of Libyans. Once the bullets started flying most in the mob would have turned and ran. so I don’t believe this. Yes two Marines can stop 400 people in a mob - especially if they are in a compound. Perhaps the end result would have been the same but at least there would have been a bunch of dead Libyans and an honorable end - like the Alamo.

Who is responsible for putting the U.S. Ambassador in such a situation without adequate security?

Did the rules of engagement permit the Marines to have ammunition?

BS... a squad of Marines has more fire power that a company in Vietnam, I have witnessed it and it is an awesome sight !!!.
All they will ever require is a “Weapons Free” command !!!

you prefer Obama’s version?
and how does property affect his story?
the damage done, is the same,
where it was 10 attackers, or 400.

Ounce again we have to go to an overseas media to get some truth. Our media in centralized into just a few sources that all speak with the same voice as shown by their coordination when they attacked Rhomny 2 days ago.

True if they’re allowed to have live ammo and if the “Rules of Engagement” says that they can use that ammo.

“It has not had an ambassador killed since 1979....”

.
And never has it had an ambassador raped. Will this fact make any difference in Bambi’s response, if any?

I believe in the Marines, but would be happier if there were more than 50 of them, and if I knew they were permitted to carry live ammo.

What does that make me?

A doubting grandma?
