Congress must raise taxes on the wealthy "because there just isn't enough to go around," Housing and Urban Development Secretary Shaun Donovan told the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute today.
"Latino growth has meant that often they're at the back of the line for housing assistance or other things," Donovan said during CHCI's annual Public Policy Conference this morning at the Ronald Reagan Building in D.C. "And the fundamental problem here (in part) is, are we going to continue to invest in those things? And if we continue to cut the budget for Section 8 housing and public housing and a whole range of other things -- if we don't fix this fiscal cliff in a fair way that actually asks higher-income Americans to pay their fair share -- Latinos are going to have to continue to wait in the back of the line, because there just isn't enough to go around. And that's a fundamental problem in our housing system, but it's a much bigger problem that is a huge issue when we make a decision about what our investments are going to be in Congress."
Donovan's remarks should play well among the Latino community if the polling data provided before he spoke holds true about how Latinos believe the deficit and economic crises should be addressed.
"We see an overwhelming percentage of Latinos want to see some amount of tax increases along with cuts," Dr. Matt Barreto of Latino Decisions told CHCI. "The most popular answer [46 percent] was just saying increasing taxes on the wealthy, that they need to pay a little bit more, rejecting the idea that we should only focus on cuts. And another large percentage -- 37 percent -- saying 'yes, tax increases should be part of the solution with cuts.'" Donovan emphasized his call for tax increases. "This is a fundamental choice," he said. "Is everyone going to pay their fair share? Or are we going to balance the budget on the backs of the most vulnerable and our most recent Americans? And, it's simply unfair."
Inviting in millions of people with a different language and culture who will be dependent on the taxpayer and need subsidized housing in perpetuity for themselves and their descendants is an INVESTMENT!
Well, it sure is for politicians, social workers, diversity educators, translators, blockbusting real estate speculators, La Raza sympathizers, and employers who like Third World wages.
The rest of us, not so much.
People standing in line to get free housing, aren’t EVER going to be well off financially. Wealth doesn’t come to a people by long lines of welfare. They need to be taught incentive, creativity, competitive edge thinking, and not collective bargaining ploys.

There is so much fraud and theft in the HUD programs that you would not even believe it, and it’s a massive program. There are federal, state, and local HUD offices, employees, and beneficiaries, and it’s tailor made for crooks.
Just once, I would like someone to ask why anyone should pay a penny more in taxes when so much of the money Washington gets now is stolen or wasted.
Hopefully, the line is reversed and pointed toward Mexico.
There is very little talk about reducing demand.
ALL of the Latinos, or just the ILLEGAL and NON-CITIZEN ones?
Why is our government so intent upon sub-dividing Americans into competing groups based on superficial differences in color, race, nation of origin, etc.?

Because if someone is being forced to go to the back of the line, then someone else must be privileged to wait at the front.

Yep, my husband and I are thinking about becoming as close to net zero taxpayers as possible - pay off house and land, earn enough for food and health care and necessities, opt out of consumerism. Barter what we can.
As more and more people take that route, earning no more than it takes to get by as they define it, and others get paid under the table because they have the mindset that only fools pay taxes, the rates will ratchet up and up. Things are going to get a whole lot uglier.
This is a good point. Surely, public housing is not doled out based on ethnic or racial groups. It is first come, first served, isn't it?

I ALREADY pay MORE than my fair share! Hey, why don't you have the 1/2 of Americans who pay NOTHING pay THEIR damn fair share!
Why do they belong in the line in the first place?
Deduct it from the Foreign Aid packages for any country that contains a burning US Embassy and/or killed/wounded/threatened diplomatic personnel.
Section 8 is becoming a total joke. I know of a woman who lives with her boyfriend all the while her own S-8 apartment sits empty. She’s there maybe once a week tops. She keeps it just in case “things don’t work out” with her boyfriend. Meanwhile there’s a 10 year waiting list for people with families trying to get an apartment.

Laws i should add that are for no other purpose than to line the pockets of the people who are in this organization of hoodlums called the government.
