Gun Sales Hinge on Obama Re-Election
WSJ ^

Posted on 09/14/2012 3:28:35 PM PDT by Red in Blue PA

As Cabela's Inc. CAB +0.45%prepares the selection of guns it will sell for the holiday season and winter hunting, the outdoor-gear retailer has two plans: one if President Barack Obama is re-elected, and one if he isn't.

The Sidney, Neb.-based retailer and other companies in the guns-and-ammo business say if Mr. Obama wins a second term they are preparing for a surge in sales—the same as they saw after he was elected in 2008—from buyers fearful the president would back policies to make buying a gun more difficult. If Republican challenger Mitt Romney wins, though, the chain plans to stock more items such as waterproof boots and camouflage hunting gear.

"If Mitt Romney is elected and there's no perceived threat on the freedom to own guns, people might decide to spend disposable income on things like outerwear instead," said Joe Arterburn, a Cabela's spokesman.

FWIW, Kevlar vests are on my list of SHTF items.

I had to consider weight and space. Logistics.

We have a bug out plan, as opposed to defend in place.

Only so much will fit. Can’t be all ammo ;-)

We have plenty to mount a typical home defense, one or two idiots; and we have enough to be sufficiently armed on the way out. We simply can’t move enough to be armed like some of the characters in the survivalist books. Other items HAVE to go with us.

Compromises. Even the Mechanized Army makes them.

Is that the pistol Travis McGee’s been recommending for the last few years?

If you can handle the noise, the recoil and the muzzle flash, it’ll pack a h3ll of a punch firing those FMJ rounds.

Geesh man, just use a r.45 ;-)

"Food for thought: in an extended SHTF scenario, the grid will go down."

Which "SHTF scenario?"

I’ve heard of people doing that. Is it necessary to coat the wood with anything?

OK, there are a variety of ways it can start, but what causes the grid to go down in a wide array of SHTF scenarios? Whatever scenario you pick, if the SHTF, WHY will the grid go down?

Here’s the rationale:

My neighbor and friend works for Ga Power. His job, along with that of a couple couple score more, is to keep the power plant running. Day X, one other guy doesn’t come to work on the first shift. Day X+3, 6 guys plus 5 more on the other shifts don’t show up. Day X+9, even my bud, who’s DEDICATED to Ga Power, goes out in every storm, etc., CAN’T get to work because he can’t get gas, and his local store is empty, and some of the neighbors are starting to act sketchy, so HE stays home. Day X+11 the power plant shuts down automatically. This happens at plant after plant until the grid collapses.

When TSHTF the grid will go down if rational commerce and trade is/are disrupted.

Do *NOT* count on electric power if the just-in-time supply chain fails. The power plants may not run out of coal or gas, BUT they will run out of workers because the workers CAN not or DARE not come to work.

A .45 won’t penetrate body armor: 7.62x25mm will.

Oh, the country will survive; lefties and their communism...not so much.

True. But you also have to hit what you are shooting at, meaning THAT pistol firing that round will recoil like a son of a gun, making it tough to maintain an aim point. It is a serious short range pistol however.

The same is true for a long barrel .357 magnum. Heck of a punch, but put two rounds in a 12 inch circle.

... of course you may not need more than one round ;-)

I’ll stick with my .45

Lead wheel weights got banned a while back in CA, but you can still find lots of them along the freeway, or get them from tire shops still removing the old ones.

If you use them in BP revolvers, they are kind of a tight load because the alloy is a little harder, benefit is they seem to group tighter, drawback is they make them even more involved to clean ‘cause they foul a bit more...

I use them in my pair of 1858 New Army .44’s all the time.

If you have the same kind of luck I do that will end up being lost in a boating accident.

I don't know. I used to regularly put 6 aimed shots in the black with my 8" .44 at 50 yds. My partner the same with a 6" .357. Haven't shot it much in a while but I bet I could get my whiskey eye again before burning up a box of 50.
