Gay actor: ‘I can’t think of anything worse than being brought up by two gay dads’

British actor Rupert Everett says he “can’t think of anything worse” than two gay men bringing up a child together—an opinion that is probably held by vast numbers of people who would not dare to say so in public. But, thanks to the magic shield of celebrity, actors can get away with speech “crimes” that the rest of us would (metaphorically) hang for.

Being gay himself also deflects criticism—Everett came out as a homosexual 20 years ago and has said that this damaged his acting career. His comments on gay parenting were made in an interview with the Sunday Times Magazine last weekend (alas, The Times is only accessible to paid subscribers so we rely on The Telegraph here).

Everett, probably best know for his role as a gay man in the 1997 film My Best Friend’s Wedding, says his mother, Sara, who was also interviewed for the article, “still wishes I had a wife and kids. She thinks children need a father and a mother, and I agree with her. I can’t think of anything worse than being brought up by two gay dads.”

The 53-year-old, who has a boyfriend, said—somewhat unnecessarily—that he was not “not speaking on behalf of the gay community.” Then he said something very interesting:

In fact, I don’t feel like I’m part of any “community.” The only community I belong to is humanity, and we’ve got too many children on the planet, so it’s good not to have more.

Leaving aside the comment about “too many children,” his note of skepticism about a “gay community” suggests that the impression given by gay activists (who are, of course, decrying his views) of a large and united constituency of homosexual persons is a political myth. We need to hear from more of these individuals on subjects such as gay marriage and parenting.

It’s really not surprising. Gays are notoriously promiscuous, and that doesn’t go hand in hand with lifetime commitment. There must be plenty of them who are glad to have a ready made excuse for not being tied down.

I can imagine having two “dads” hanging out at my football practices in high school during the 70’s! Or coming to the games! Yikes!

On the other hand, the abuse I took may have toughened me up so much that I'd be retired from the NFL now. Kind of like “A Boy names Sue”.

the gay community is in no way monolithic... the loud and noisy ones tend to be very liberal, but hey that’s true in the general population as well.

More than half of them I would wager want nothing to do with marriage or children.

His career has been hurt by being gay (takes the rom com crap he’s best suited for off the table). Also been hurt by his being a lousy actor. ;-p

I loved those cartoons as a kid.

That movie was an abortion. TOP 10 or even top 5 worst I’ve ever seen.

The live-action Inspector Gadget movie was indeed horrible, and nothing like the cartoon it was "based on".

But in fairness to Rupert Everett, that wasn't because of his performance. He was just following the piece-of-turd script he was given, and the script portrayed the villain as a giddy wise-cracking megalomaniac corporate CEO named "Sanford Scolex" with a grappling hook hand. In other words, absolutely NOTHING like the cartoon counterpart -- the cartoon "Dr. Claw" was a calm, methodical cold-hearted psychopath genius with a spiked metal glove and hoarse mechanical voice who sat in a chair all day, petting his cat, barking orders, and never EVER revealed his face.

If anything, Matthew Broderick's performance was much worse, since the script at least kept Inspector Gadget as a bumbling and incompetent fool with a heart of gold who meant well. The problem was that Broderick was nothing like Don Adams and irritated you so much, you wanted to choke him every time he was on screen.

For those who can bear to sit through a movie aimed at 8 year olds, I actually watched the direct to video "sequel", Inspector Gadget 2, a few years back. To my surprise, it intentionally IGNORES just about everything that happened in the first movie (except the annoying talking car voiced by D.L. Hughley is back) and is written and directed by people who actually cared about the 80s cartoon. French Stewart is hilarious as Inspector Gadget and channels Don Adams, Tony Martin is a menacing evil Dr. Claw (who is written the way he is supposed to be and NEVER reveals his face), and Penny and Brain save the day like they're supposed to. The plot and gags were still terrible, but at least they didn't rape my childhood with the second movie and it was an adequate tribute.

I never watched the film, either, but did watch the cartoons back in the ‘80s. Dr. Claw was just a variation on Bond’s Blofeld and Gadget was a composite of Inspecter Clouseau and Don Adams’ old Get Smart character. Making a live-action film of it was a bad idea (ditto when they attempted a Rocky & Bulwinkle abomination).

Did you ever see “Cities of Gold” ? That was another cartoon from the early/mid ‘80s that followed a little boy, Esteban, from Europe to the New World circa 1500s. Fortunately, they mapped out a start-to-finish storyline arc which concluded in 39 half-hour episodes. Certainly a cut above the mindless cartoon crap put out today. That actually could work as a live-action series if they were to remake it.

I saw French Stewart was in it and assumed it must be worse.

It was only the one time I saw the first one, in the theater I think. You'd have to pay me to watch it again. That talking car.........

I never heard of "Cities of Gold". Did you guys ever see the Tintin cartoons? I liked those.

I used to enjoy the USA TV show, ‘White Collar’. Then I found out the lead actor is a homo with a “partner” and adopted kids. That was the end of ‘White Collar’ for me.

French Stewart is at least funny, and he deserves more prominent work. Broderick maxed out with “Ferris Bueller” (although he was great in “Election”).

I saw maybe part of the “Tintin” cartoons, but never got into them. I thought that was the name of the dog.

There’s a dog called Rin Tin Tin, that’s something else.

Election is one of my favorite movies.
