Intelligence sources tell Fox News they are convinced the deadly attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, was directly tied to Al Qaeda -- with a former Guantanamo detainee involved.
That revelation comes on the same day a top Obama administration official called last week's deadly assault a "terrorist attack" -- the first time the attack has been described that way by the administration after claims it had been a "spontaneous" act.
"Yes, they were killed in the course of a terrorist attack on our embassy," Matt Olsen, director of the National Counterterrorism Center, said during a Senate hearing Wednesday.
Olsen echoed administration colleagues in saying U.S. officials have no specific intelligence about "significant advanced planning or coordination" for the attack.

But... but... we had to release him from the inhumane conditions of Gitmo. /S
and but, but... if we release the blind sheik to Egypt, where they’ll promise to keep him in detention, they’ll like us a lot more...
No ifs, ands, or buts: Obama is either a feckless fool, or a person who has certain priorities. Maybe he’s an atheist, but his priorities place Islam and Marxism above American interests, and those of any minority above those of the public as a whole.
It’s almost like Obama accidentally assassinated his own ambassador.
but, but, but maybe Obama should’ve gotten Congressional approval to help the bad guys oust the terrible guy with a bunch of worse guys.
Lest we forget the whole time Bush was POTUS he was fighting dimocrat lawsuits for detaining prisoners in GITMO because they weren't captured soldiers.
This is Bush's fault just as much as it was Bill Clinton who changed welfare to workfare and balanced the budget in the 90's.
Stevens was allegedly gay.. Obama is, well.. Put two and two together. Someone had stories to tell, so..
and that is why this white house has told the media to report that it was all over a video on you tube.
The media lies because the white house tells them to lie and he sheep and idiots of this country have no clue it was all because of obama and his failed forign policy and an ex gitmo turd and a place where obama wanted to close.
And to think that this b*stard had settled down to a quiet, peaceful life in the suburbs until he saw that darn youtube video two weeks ago and suddenly became psychotic.
The fact that this guy was released from Git-Mo in 2007 (aka Bush did it) you are going to get a lot media spin on this.
Bush did it because the government was sued by Eric Holder’s lawfirm, and was forced to transfer this guy - to a stable country whose dictator had been intimidated by us.
Obama and the “Al-Qaida Spring” changed all that, and that’s what led to his release.
If that's the story (Bush was forced to do it), all fingers can point to Holder.
I don't see a downside.
Yes, but was Bush forced to do it because Holder's law firm won a case as I've been reading?
If so, I don't see how Bush will be blamed.
Rather, we can double up on flakking Holder.
No, Susan Rice said it was the movie.
Okey dokey. How’s the release of the blind dude coming?
More weasel words from these traitors.
Tell the victims loved ones that it wasn’t “significant”.
I am so stinking sick of the lies.
When did Libya release this terrorist from their prisons?
Was that an Arab Spring event?
If so, the blood of Stevens is on Obama.
“If that’s the story (Bush was forced to do it), all fingers can point to Holder.
I don’t see a downside.”
The downside is that too many Americans can’t keep more than a sound bite in their brain.
That’s why we have a President Obama.
Nope Qaddafi let him out of prison the very next the very next year.
