Rebels shoot down fighter jet in northern Syria, witness says -- The witness, an independent journalist who asked to remain anonymous, said rebel fighters were attacking a military base near the town when the jet flew over and rebels shot it down with anti-aircraft guns. Vastly outgunned, rebels say they need surface-to-air missiles to take down planes and helicopters used by the Syrian military to bombard opposition strongholds. Fighters use outdated anti-aircraft machine guns that are welded to pickup trucks but they are inaccurate and useless if the military aircraft fly above a certain altitude. On August 27 fighters shot down a helicopter on the outskirts of Damascus and three days later rebels said they had brought down a jet in Idlib, near the Turkish border. Activists say more than 27,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in the 18-month-old revolt in Syria, which began with peaceful street protests that provoked a military crackdown and mushroomed into civil war. Despite calling for Assad to step down, the West is wary of arming disparate rebel groups.

If some Americans ever decided to forcibly overthrow the US government as some in Syria are now doing, the USA administration D/R would throw everything our military had at massacring and extinguishing them.

Why does the USA believe we have a right to interject our supposed values upon other sovereign nations? I don’t agree with our involvement in the ME and the Syrian thing and the Libyan thing.

We need to get back to rebuilding our USA and get out of a ME that is none of our business.

Yes, but these times were supposed to be different. Our peace prize winner isn’t getting the peace done.

I was going to post another article, about the FSA takeover of a Syrian border crossing just over the line from Turkey, but somehow managed to lose track of it. Hmm... [rustling noise]

Syrian rebels capture strategic border crossing into Turkey

I saw an article saying the FSA had moved their HQ from Turkey back into Syria... or something. Is this related?

Why are the rebels trying to prod Turkey into this war?

Senator John Kerry said he was alarmed that a country the US had put lives on the line to democratize was so flagrantly violating US interests... Iran has been using civilian aircraft to fly military personnel and large quantities of weapons across Iraqi airspace to Syria to aid Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in his attempt to crush an 18-month uprising against his government, according to a Western intelligence report seen by Reuters. Earlier this month, US officials said they were questioning Iraq about Iranian flights in Iraqi airspace suspected of ferrying arms to al-Assad, a staunch Iranian ally. On Wednesday, US Senator John Kerry threatened to review US aid to Baghdad if it does not halt such overflights. Iraq says it does not allow the passage of any weapons through its airspace. However, the intelligence report obtained says Iranian weapons have been flowing into Syria via Iraq in large quantities. Such transfers, the report says, are organized by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. "This is part of a revised Iranian modus operandi that US officials have only recently addressed publicly, following previous statements to the contrary," said the report, a copy of which was provided by a UN diplomatic source. "It also flies in the face of declarations by Iraqi officials," it said. "Planes are flying from Iran to Syria via Iraq on an almost daily basis, carrying IRGC [Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps] personnel and tens of tons of weapons to arm the Syrian security forces and militias fighting against the rebels." It added that Iran was also "continuing to assist the regime in Damascus by sending trucks overland via Iraq" to Syria. -- Iran ships arms, troops to Syria via Iraq

On of our most important values is national security.

When a nation has ties to terror groups committed to killing Americans and that sentiment would grow in our absence why would you think we don't have a right to intervene?
