After Foisting Romney on Base, GOP Elites Now Start to Gripe
realclearpolitics.com ^ | September 24, 2012 | Benjamin Domenech

One of the most interesting aspects of the 2012 election is how the tea party movement has proven more politically mature than the center-right’s self-styled elites, and those who spent much of the Republican primary season chiding swathes of people for being insufficiently pragmatic have turned out to be far more childish than the conservative base.

For the past several weeks, Mitt Romney has been surrounded by critics from the DC-Manhattan elite who’ve denounced him for a lackluster, unfocused campaign, teeing off on Team Romney in the wake of the 47 percent comments for a number of issues—but mostly, in my read, from failing to take their advice. Romney’s defenders, meanwhile, have been many of the same individuals who spent the primary season torching him in effigy as the encapsulation of everything they hate about the Republican ruling class. For months the elites bashed the base for failing to suck it up and see the big picture, to line up for Romney and come on in for the big win. But they got their wish!

The tea party movement—once again proving its pragmatism once the general election season rolls around—lined up in the immediate aftermath of the Paul Ryan pick and has proven they can grow up. Professional concern troll David Frum, who spent most of the primary season telling liberals why conservatives were never going to suck it up and go for Romney, now seems very concerned that they have. Michelle Malkin, who could be taking the wood to Romney on a daily basis for his infidelity to the immigration hardline, has morphed into a loyal soldier while Peggy Noonan is calling for Romney to bring in the 82-year-old Jim Baker to rescue his campaign (yes, really). Ann Romney seems a bit perturbed about this.

The roles of all...

The Establishment is about “power for me, not for thee”.

Some of us moved to Romney from Palin.

It was heartbreaking when Palin stood down. About the worst thing that could happen.

That said, I picked Romney once Palin stood down. With an understanding that we would bail on Romney after one election cycle, unless he picked a good VP.

Well it turns out he picked a good VP.

SO WHEN CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE VP?

The Peggy Noonans of the world are not at all disappointed in Romney. They just think he’s going to lose and they want to get out in front of it by blaming him for his mistakes so they can say “if only he’d taken my advice.”

It’s pathetic, but predictable.

One gets the feeling . . .

A certain hit by the rock band, Boston, comes to mind.

“There were primaries weren’t there?”
Not really. By the time my primary rolled around, only Romney and Ron Paul were left. That scarcely qualifies as a choice.

After so many years, I’ve never seen that term used to describe something so appropriately.

Nice one. To quote Charlie’s mother, “I wish I had thought of that. And from on, I did.” LOL, just kidding.

Good one...

??? Palin announced her non-run almost a year ago on the Levin show, then Greta, early October last year. A year ago short a few weeks. You picked Romney a year ago?

My dear Lord, there is no end to the negative barrage of articles pushing the same old tired bull shiite.
Romney is going to win this thing big and the liberal media does this for 2 reasons: 1. discourage Republican turn out
2. pump up the idiot base
3. If they can keep it close, or even make people believe its close... they can cheat.
I have 3 people to get to the polls on the 6th, so I have used a personal day at work. Bottom line is that the negative drum beat of the msm is pressing me to measures I have never considered previously, even if it is as small as a get out the vote drive

Whenever.

I moved to Romney from Palin.

Whatever and whenever that was, that and then it was.

I believe Romney had the second best chance of winning. I still do.

Though I’m getting a bit frustrated that he’s so blatantly caving toward the liberal.

Treat Obama as an adversary.

And put your VP out front more.

This is exactly what I was thinking. We are going to have to oppose the establishment to carry the very candidate they foisted on us over the finish line.

“There were primaries weren’t there? Was any more conservative candidate denied the opportunity to run?”

Yes, as a matter of fact THEY WERE effectively denied the opportunity to run in VA. You see, thanks to the shenanigans of our worthless and feckless gop-e of Virginia, there were exactly two candidates on the primary ballot: willard and Ron Paul.

There was some similarity you saw between the two that drew you to both?

Maybe.

Or maybe I just recognized a fighter.

Either way, I’m disappointed so far. Hope Romney keys it up. I was (very) happy about his appointment of Ryan.

Now that done, he’s sidelined his own winning VP.

Get Ryan out front!

Gee, finally someone is actually writing what I have thought since the beginning of the primaries. The elites attacked every Republican candidate except Romney and Huntsman. They were the intelligent ones. The elites had called the Tea Party and conservatives polarizing and stated only an unprincipled moderate could win.

Now the election is at stake and the MSM has lost credibility with most Americans. Obama can be defeated. The Republican elites attack Romney and support Obama.

RE :”And put your VP out front more.

I am getting a feeling that those Ryan 2016 posts will be popping up here in January(if Romney loses) much like the Palin 2012 threads popped up 4 years earlier.
