Newt Gingrich Stands By Akin At Missouri Fundraiser (A tsunami of money/support coming for Akin)
The National Memo ^ | 9/24/12 | Axel Tonconogy

Appearing today at a fundraiser in Kirkwood, Missouri for Senate candidate Todd Akin, former Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich offered the support and encouragement that few others in his party have dared give.

Abandoned by the GOP after his infamous “legitimate rape” comments, and crucified by the liberal and conservative media alike, Akin vowed to remain in the Senate race for the “long haul” and emerge victorious.

After sharing his toxic views on women’s health, Akin’s conservative donors and supporters pulled out in droves, denouncing the candidate’s statements. This despite the fact that in 2011 Akin had co-authored a bill with Paul Ryan to narrow the definition of rape to “forcible rape,” in order to prevent the use of federal Medicaid funds on abortions.

During the fundraiser, Newt Gingrich expressed confidence in Akin’s chances. ”This is a winnable race,” Gingrich said. “I don’t see how any national Republicans… have a choice after tomorrow.”

Gingrich was referring to the September 25 deadline for Akin to withdraw from the race using a court order. Resisting the onslaught of Republicans who urged him to drop out of the race, Akin allowed an August 22 deadline to pass. After tomorrow’s deadline, under Missouri state law, Akin’s name will remain on the ballot no matter what. However, nothing suggests that Akin will pull out of the race before then.

The race in Missouri is one of the critical linchpins of the GOP’s bid to regain the Senate majority. In the lead before his monumental gaffe, Akin now trails his Democratic opponent, incumbent Claire McCaskill, by 6 points, a Rasmussen poll shows. During the Kirkwood fundraiser, Gingrich stressed that this election was “a key to winning control of the Senate.”

Rick Tyler, a former Gingrich aide now attached to Akin’s Senate bid, addressed the issue of

Next thing you know, John C. Danforth will endorse McCaskill.

Thanks Evil. I have been getting really sick and tired of people from out of state meddling in our affairs. They have no clue, they don’t understand the playing field nor the players. I hope I run into Akin sometime soon. I will be sure to tell him that he did the right thing and to HELL with the GOPe and other RINO’s.

I wouldn't consider $50,000, the amount raised at the Gingrich fundraiser, a 'tsunami of money'. Akin needs money badly. He doesn't have it. McCaskill has about $3.5 million on hand with hundreds of thousands more available from liberal PACs.

The Senate Conservatives Fund hasn't gotten involved yet. And even if they do, how much can they commit to a single candidate out of their total war chest? By dropping Akin so publicly when his gaff first happened, the GOP party leadership has pretty much tied their hands on how much they can help.

Open primaries suck...I am sick of the process that allows supporters of the opposing party to interfere with the selection of our candidates. It’s BS.

Four years ago, when Rush Limbaugh's "Operation Chaos" was in full bloom, open primaries were great. Times change.

Didn't like it then, either...

At least it's a start.

If polls start showing the GOP losing the race to gain, at least one seat to get a majority in the Senate by mid Aug, I expect to see a turnaround in the Senate Conservatives Fund priorities. I am still optimistic that voter enthusiasm to kick McCrackel out of office as well as Akin riding in on Romney's coat tails will give him the win we need.

Go Newt!

I do hope the voters of Missouri will not split the ticket and do vote for Akin and Willard.

Missouri Ping list, please?

I wonder when Reince Priebus plans to announce he is sending money to the McCaskill campaign.

Akin was a fool to make such a statement but I applaud Newt for trying to save him from his own stupidity.

He repeated a day or two ago that Akin would get no support from the party. He can't go back now.

He doesn’t have to. By pulling the money from Akin, he has already given a huge donation to McCaskill.

I suggest everyone pull any money they were going to give to the RNC and donate it to Akin’s campaign. Also, be sure to let the DNC know exactly why you are pulling your money from them; turnabout is fair play!

Cheers

Whatever bad things you have to say about Akin, you have to grant that he has a backbone of steel and doesn't run from a fight like Boner and McConkhead.

Try doing a ‘refresh” on the site. I think I got the same ad and got rid of it by doing that. Good luck.
