Spain Recoils, as Its Hungry Forage Trash Bins for a Next Meal
NYT via CNBC ^ | September 25, 2012 | Suzanne Daley

On a recent evening, a hip-looking young woman was sorting through a stack of crates outside a fruit and vegetable store here in the working-class neighborhood of Vallecas as it shut down for the night.

At first glance, she looked as if she might be a store employee. But no. The young woman was looking through the day’s trash for her next meal. Already, she had found a dozen aging potatoes she deemed edible and loaded them onto a luggage cart parked nearby.

“When you don’t have enough money,” she said, declining to give her name, “this is what there is.”

The woman, 33, said that she had once worked at the post office but that her unemployment benefits had run out and she was living now on 400 euros a month, about $520. She was squatting with some friends in a building that still had water and electricity, while collecting “a little of everything” from the garbage after stores closed and the streets were dark and quiet.

Such survival tactics are becoming increasingly commonplace here, with an unemployment rate over 50 percent among young people and more and more households having adults without jobs. So pervasive is the problem of scavenging that one Spanish city has resorted to installing locks on supermarket trash bins as a public health precaution.

There will always be more people desiring charity, than there will be charity to provide. The only long-term solution is to eliminate all obstacles from people willing to offer their services for whatever an employer is willing to provide.

If Spain eliminated all rules making it hard for employers to fire those who don't work out, people would be more willing to hire. If they eliminated all rules setting minimum wages and benefits, then people with minimal skills to offer would be more able to find work.

And if they deported all the unskilled immigrants, then native Spaniards would be much more able to find work.

It is a survival strategy that has worked for the last 4,000 years or so. Denying it is what’s ignorant.

"That's ignorant": what a liberal says about a position he dislikes, but to which he has no reasoned response.

Oh. I was just worrying about hungry people in Spain and whether there were any private charities to take care of them in the short term. I’m not into philosophy right now.

Can't say they weren't warned - from nearly a century ago:

In the Carboniferous Epoch we were promised abundance for all,
By robbing selected Peter to pay for collective Paul;
But, though we had plenty of money, there was nothing our money could buy,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "If you don't work you die."

Oh. I was just worrying about hungry people in Spain and whether there were any private charities to take care of them in the short term.

There probably are charities, and they are probably stretched.

Charity depends on there being many more employed people willing to give to charity than there are unemployed people needing charity. Much like welfare depends on there being more taxes being paid than claims being filed.

I was on a long road trip with a liberal lady a while back, and we had a long discussion on the subject. What I think convinced her was my telling her "What would you prefer: tightening up on welfare now, or waiting for the system to collapse? If we wait for a collapse, more people will die."

You warn people over and over and over that socialists eventually run out of other people’s money... and they are still shocked when it happens

And then the socialists run away and when conserrvatives get elected and try to fix the problem, they are called heartless and blamed for it because they are cutting spending

“(3) Do whatever you need to do to make him want to keep you and feed you. “

And the alternative? do whatever you need to do to make the Federal Gov’mt want to keep you and feed you?

Maybe start wearing a towel wrapped around my head with a fanbelt?!!

Simple solution for her:
(1) Find a man who has a good job.
(2) Ask him to let you move in with him.
(3) Do whatever you need to do to make him want to keep you and feed you.

Prostitution by any other name would still be immoral to many of us who feel our bodies are temples that God made. I would rather die of starvation than move in with a man I didn't know, just for for "three hots and a cot." I'm worth much more than that, and I suspect I'm not alone in my thinking.

Shame on you for suggesting that.

Good advice for young women. Generally worked out well for them for millennia until this women’s lib thing came along.

Shame on you for completely ignoring 4,000 years of recorded human history. You say you’d “rather die” but I’ll bet whatever sum you wish that after about ten days of eating out of garbage cans....

How about the fact the men have no jobs either and couldn’t feed her if he was married to her? Oh wait i forgot we live in some fairy tale world where all the men have jobs and all the women are incompetent.

Maybe a little common sense and perhaps just one math course and you’d figure out that a quarter of the men there don’t have jobs and can’t feed themselves either.
I bet if that was a male in the article you’d be wondering why he didn’t have a job.
Maybe 2 seconds of thought before commenting.

Definitely a liberal. You claim that NO man, ANYWHERE in Spain, has a job?
