On October 6, 2012, I will be a guest on WVOX Radio, 1460 AM, on the talk show, "And Nothing but the Truth," at 10:10 AM Eastern Time.

The New Chinese carrier, CV-16, Liao Ning

The topic will be the new Chinese Aircraft Carrier, CV-16, Liao Ning specifically, its capabilities, and what it means in the Western Pacific, and the rapid growth of the Chinese Navy in general. The Chinese carrier was launched last year, has undergone trials, and was commisisoned into the Chinese Navy (PLAN) on September 25, 2010.

The program will be live, and will also be streamed to the internet. I am not sure if this program, "And Nothing but the Truth," (http://www.andnothingbutthetruth.com/) I am not sure if the show is syndicated or not and playing on other stations around the country. I believe there will be call ins to the show, so listen for the call in number during the interview, call in, and I will be happy to talk to you and answer questions.

The Host is Frank V. Vernuccio, Jr., who is the Editor of the New York Analysis of Policy and Government (http://usagovpolicy.com/) which looks at governmental policies and their impact at the local, state, and national level. He was a candidate for the Ney York State Senate in 2010. In that campaign, which he lost, his positions were published as follows:

Anyone wanting to listen can tune in to WVOX 1460 AM in New York City, or listen live online:

Thanks. I am sure the question of how other countrries are responding to the growth of the Chinese Navy will come up.

The Indians have just finished a refit of their own where the former Gorshkov Russian carrier has been turned into a modern STOBAR carrier called the Vikramaditya, and they have already launched a second, indegenous carrier of their own, the Vikrant, which will be a couple of more years outfitting. the JApanese built two small helo carriers, the Hyuga class and are now building a much larger carrier class, the first of which should launch next year. the Koreans have built a large LPH vessel which could carry F-35Bs if necessary, the Dokdo. And the Australians are building two vessels similarly, the Canberra class.

So, there is an honest to goodness naval arms race of pretty large proportion going on in the Western Pacific right now.

Looking forward to listening.

The fascist moslem peacock in the WH has declared things like fat, coal, oil, un-born babies, capitalism, first-amendment rights on the internet, 2nd-amendment supporters, those who love individual liberty, and family meals as the Nation's primary enemies.

Meanwhile our real enemies, Islam and the chicoms, get a pass...

IMHO, if internal "control" issues in China keep deteriorating, at some point the chicoms will need a war.

Just saying...

"...the Koreans have built a large LPH vessel..."

Did you mean LHA or LHD which are both more advance than a LPH? All our LPH's have been decommissioned. If so, that means they are still years behind and gives me some comfort. BTW, did many flight ops on LPH-11 (New Orleans) back when.

Thanks for staying on top of this.

They have classified it as an LPH, about 20,000 tons. Here she is, the ROKN Dokdo, 6111:

ROKN DOKDO, 6111 LPH

Here's another view:

ROKN DOKDO, 6111 LPH

Haa a well deck that can carry two LCACs. On 30mm CIWS, and one 21 cell RAM launcher for self defense. But the South Koreans have the largest, most heavily armed AEGIS DDGs built to date, the Se Jong class DDG, to escort them..

Thanbks guys...hope you get to listen. Here is the Chinese Carrier. she will carry 24 (2 squadrons) of J-15 Stirke fighters which are a Chinese build, modernized, Russian SU-33. Also shown below:

Chinese CV-16, Liao Ning

She has four 18 cell missile launchers (like our RAM missiles), three 10 barrell 30mm CIWS, and two 12 cell anti-submarine/torpedo rocket launchers for self-defense.

Here's that J-15. They only have six prototypes built to date, but should field their first squadron in the next 12-18 months and embark them on the carrier.:

It’s nice to know, and thanks for doing this. But somehow a Chinese battle ship doesn’t scare me as the first blast from a naval gun and all the screws will fall out. Now the silkworm missles were a different story.

I don’t want to think that some Americans may be assisting the Chicoms w/carrier ops. One LSO, some flight deck and lauch/arresting gear CPOs . . .

Interesting that they chose the LPH designation since ours never had landing craft wells. BTW, our LHD’s are twice the tonnage and I’m sure much better electronic warfare.

Yep. The WASP Class LHD is 40,000 tons.

The new America Class LHA, the first of which was just launched (nice video of the launch at that link) is a whopping 45,000 tons and has no well deck. It's a US Marine light aircraft carrier. Using MV-22s and helos for air assaut, and JSFs for close support. or, in the Sea Conterol/Light Carrier mode, capable of carrying several squadrons of F-35Bs (20+ aircraft).

I thought the LHD was built to replace the LHA as it did with the LPH. Why would the Navy not want a landing craft well on an advanced amphib ship? So now we have a "new" America Class LHA without a well? Don't get it. Guess Google is my friend.

Just read the purpose of a redesigned LHA is to give more space for more aircraft. Well, they know better than I. But still think the landing well was a good idea. Of course, we still have LPD's with their landing wells. Sheesh, I'm getting old and can't keep up.

The Marines want to be able to provied a lot of their own air cover/support. NOw they have a vessel that will aloow them to do so, and in addition prvide huge OTH Air assault without getting too close to the shore/littorals. So, F-35 and V-22 Ospreys. The are going to build a second just like it (in fact have already started). Then the resty of class are supposed to be built out like the Makin Idland with the well deck.

So you have eight Wasps with the well deck, will have two LHA “air centric” and then following that, will have normal replacements of the Wasp calss as they come up, maintianing at least 10 of the larger deck amphibs go forward.

In addition, of course, we will have the 12 San Antonio Class LPDs with their large well decks.
