Man eaten by hogs at Oregon farm

COOS BAY, OR (KPTV) -

An Oregon man trying to feed his 700-pound hogs was eaten by the animals Thursday, and sheriff's deputies are trying to determine what led up to his death.

Terry Garner, who lived near the rural town of Riverton in southern Oregon, went to feed the animals on his farm at 7:30 a.m.

When he wasn't seen for several hours, a family member went to look for him, and found Garner's dentures on the ground in front of the hog enclosure, which housed several of the animals.

While searching the hog enclosure, the family member found Garner's body in several pieces, with a majority of it consumed by the hogs, the district attorney said.

Now deputies are investigating how Garner ended up in a position where the hogs were able to eat him.

District Attorney Paul Frasier said there are a number of possible scenarios, including one in which Garner suffered a heart attack. Another possible scenario is that given Garner's age and health, the hogs were able to knock him down and kill him. Frasier said there have been reports that at least one of the hogs had been aggressive toward Garner in the past.

Because of the unusual circumstances surrounding Garner's death, detectives haven't ruled out foul play.

A forensic pathologist examined what little was left of Garner's body over the weekend, but was not able to identify the cause or manner of death.

For now, Garner's cause of death is listed as undetermined, and his remains will be further examined by a forensic anthropologist at the University of Oregon.

How horrible. Can you imagine how the family member who discovered him felt?

Yikes - this is awful.

So there’ so little left of his body that they can’t determine cause of death? I dare say that’s the cause!

I cannot recall hearing any of these stories when Bush was President. There was enough money to buy the food for our pets. Nowadays we hear more about pets eating the owners and even humans attacking other humans and eating off their face. So much so that the US government website has issued warnings and prep steps of how to avoid what they call "zombie attacks".

We're not only becoming a third world nation under this pResident but another south pacific island of cannibals.

Welcome to Obama's America!

Sad, but it’s common sense that an ederly man should not go out and feed 700lb hogs. They will knock you down, and once they draw blood they go into a bit of a frenzy. Hopefully he just had a heart attack and dropped dead before he hit the ground.

I remember when I was a kid and someone would yell out “where is Mom” in our house. My mom would often repeat a phrase her dad (my grandfather) would say “I went to sh!t and the hogs ate me”.

It is well known that hogs will kill and eat you if given a chance. You learn that pretty early in life living in farm country.

I’ve heard tell of farmers feeding parts of dead hogs to their other hogs. Apparently, they’ll eat anything...kinda like a typical Democrat voter -——as long as it’s free, or there is a government check involved....

My grandfather warned me about the hogs. They are quick and can be vicious, especially a sow with piglets. I just don't think he had any 700 pounders. Are they artificially growth hormoning and creating monsters?

That poor old fellow likely had a very painful and horrifying death.

One of my favorite childhood memories is our whole family taking off for a week at the end of August every year to spend time at my Grandparent’s farm about 20 mi. from Des Moines, and about 350 miles from us, north of Chicago.
My grandfather would , for pennies, buy tinfoil trays of moldy sweet rolls, and he’d let me throw this crap into a 55 gallon drum hooked up to a tube feeding into a trough made I think out of an old corroded Yankee gutter, or something with that shape, which is where the hogs would collect and drink away. I used to like stirring the slop in this 55 gallon drum with a big stick, and the smell still lingers in my nostrils of just how malodorous this brew was.
BTW, horrible story!

I went duck hunting, back in the day, with the sons of the commanding officer of the army ammunition plant. It was a very special treat.

One morning we left our ducks at the boat ramp and continued to hunt. When we returned, the hogs that were lose in the leased cornfields ate all of our ducks. The Col’s youngest son was outraged. I was pissed. all that hard work that was just hog feed. Nothing left but some feathers and lots of feet

If he had a heart attack, which is a reasonable assumption..they should be able to determine it by analyzing the blood in the remains they found...however, he could have suffered a heart attack..not a fatal one..fallen, and then the pigs went hog wild..

Robert Pickton
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Pickton
Robert William “Willie” Pickton (born October 24, 1949)[2] of Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada is a former pig farmer[3] and serial killer convicted of the second-degree murders of six women.[4][5] He is also charged in the deaths of an additional twenty women,[6] many of them prostitutes and drug users from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. In December 2007 he was sentenced to life in prison, with no possibility of parole for 25 years —the longest sentence available under Canadian law for murder.[7]

During the trial’s first day of jury evidence, January 22, 2007, the Crown stated he confessed to forty-nine murders to an undercover police officer posing as a cellmate. The Crown reported that Pickton told the officer that he wanted to kill another woman to make it an even 50, and that he was caught because he was “sloppy”.[8]
