Facebook in recent months has begun allowing marketers to target ads at users based on the email address and phone number they list on their profiles, or based on their surfing habits on other sites.
It has also started selling ads that follow Facebook members beyond the confines of the social network.
Facebook is making the moves, which show some early success, as it faces investor pressure to become a bigger player in digital advertising.
But in doing so, the Menlo Park, Calif., company treads a fine line between using consumer data to attract marketer dollars and living up to its promises to users and regulators to keep that data private.
At the core of Facebook's expanding ad strategy is the fact that the social network knows a lot about its users' true identities. Facebook is built on people volunteering personal information that's valuable to marketers, including names, friends, phone numbers and tastes.
In September, Facebook began allowing marketers with their own lists of email addresses and phone numbers to target ads at specific groups of Facebook users of at least 20 at a time. Facebook matches up that outside data with information users have entered into their profile.
Last week, the Electronic Privacy Information Center filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission over Facebook's new business practices, particularly its relationship with Datalogix and an ad-buying service called Facebook Exchange.
The open question is whether Facebook users will find the services unsettling enough to stop using the site.

Anyone who uses Facebook with the expectation that they have even a shred of privacy left is delusional.
It’s so annoying that you are unable to post comments to news stories unless it is through facebook, which has your full name.
You can protect your page for the most part, but this is to much.
Our local Gannett newsrag has made their online forums and replies to editorial and letters accessable only through Facebook. The reason stated was to raise the level of civility. Topics which used to get hundreds of posts now get a few dozen at best, and others only a few.
They have succeeded in their real goal of quieting dissent from the regime’s dictates.

I’m not a fan, never put things on FB and only use it to see what kid is doing on there. Conservative friends put some good stuff on there, too.
Since the beginning of the week, I have been getting unsolicited Obambot ads which are really pissing me off. I can’t block it or however you can get rid of it. I suspect the little sh!ts at FB are pushing their boy Barry on all of us.
Any suggestions other than getting rid of FB all together?

Among the new, “improved” features: If you want to do any commenting, you need a Facebook account.

And you can't get rid of FB. Once you're signed up, they've got you and all your data forever. Even if you terminate your account they've still got all your stuff. And they'll continue to use it. That's the way they make money.

The first time this happened, I tried everything I knew to get rid of it...
No dice...I even tried to email FB to tell them what I thought of this cheap move...
Maybe a phone call.

anyone who puts there real stats - even name - of FB is dumb to the nth degree - just becasue FB says to, they obey like sheep.
Advertisers, current and potential employess, perps and gov’t spooks all track you...there’s a web site where you can see if you’re being looked at - I forget the link.
I - the “I” listed on FB - has no hits. “I” don’t exist, (no real name, DOB, town/state, school) except of course to the ‘Spy Eye’, who if they get pings they deem ‘subversive’, can find me by my provider. But otherwise, I’m not tracked...
Don’t forget your phone converstaions are monitored for catch words - and converstions/locatons are kept for future reference if “needed.” (Hitler has to be rolling in his grave over not having had all this ‘spy eye’ technology.)
The Spy Eye tracks your emails too - if you want something to be truly ‘quiet’, the old snail mail is the way to go.Even then, the age old caveat applies: Don’t put anything on paper that you wouldn’t want to see on the front page.
Anyone dumb enough to join FB with their full name deserve what they get.
Yes, FB says you MUST join with full name, DOB, schools etc - doesn't mean you should.
But this is the real enemy of freedom - Sheeple blindly foillowing orders.
I've been on FB for years, to keep up with kids, g'kids, etc. I have NEVER used my real stats.
Ditto most of my family. WE know who WE are on FB. The rest of the world doesn't need to know. (If for nothing else, remember that ID thiefs comb the net for personal data and can easily use it to steal YOUR ID.)
I get NO ads - because I never entered my real name/stats. They can’t ‘find’ me - I don’t ‘exist’.
Just because FB says you MUST enter real name, DOB ets - doesn’t mean you have to ‘obey.’
I have a standard list of ‘stats’ I use, none of which are mine, on ALL online links requiring stats, except the following - .
The only places that have my real stats is my banking and the two cyber stores I buy from.
Think about it In Free Republic - our personal information is just that. You don’t know me, I don’t know you.
Perps, advertisers, criminals, identity thiefs can’t find me.
Again: Just because FB says you must open yourself to such risks, doesn’t mean you should. You’re not buying anything from them, you don’t owe any fees. They DON’T NEED YOUR PERSONAL STATS. You need not “obey.”

That’s why you need a second facebook account that use a pseudonym and is used for no other purpose except for posting those types of comments.

I’ve seen this Obama Ad thing happen when people get tricked by FB into installing a FB plugin into their browser. The FB plugin was the source of the ads.
