Darden tests limiting worker hours as health-care changes loom (Red Lobster/Olive Garden/LongHorn)
The Orlando Sentinel ^ | October 7, 2012 | Sandra Pedicini

In an experiment apparently aimed at keeping down the cost of health-care reform, Orlando-based Darden Restaurants has stopped offering full-time schedules to many hourly workers in at least a few Olive Gardens, Red Lobsters and LongHorn Steakhouses.

Darden said the test is taking place in "a select number" of restaurants in four markets, including Central Florida, but would not give details. The company said there has been no decision made about expanding it.

In an emailed statement, Darden said staffing changes are "just one of the many things we are evaluating to help us address the cost implications health care reform will have on our business. There are still many unanswered questions regarding the health care regulations and we simply do not have enough information to make any decisions at this time."

Eureka! I think you’ve solved the mystery as to why over the summer every burger joint and retail shop within eyeshot began hanging out the shingles for part-time help.

Gotta double the size of the workforce to keep ‘em all under 30 hrs.

If I were the owner of a company, corporation, business or concern that is going to be affected by Obamacare, and I could offload it at a price that would keep me in good comfort the rest of my life, I’d friggin sell it and hide the money in some form that the government could not touch effectively.

If Obama wins, expect this from a lot of large stock holders, business owners, etc. They’re gonna check out and try and outrun the chaos. I don’t blame them.

This time of year is typically “open enrollment” time. I expect a lot of employees all across the country are going to be shocked by the changes.

Call it an October Surprise!

And how do you feel about Obamacare?

(I bet the DIM CEO isn’t cutting his hours so he won’t have insurance. Some are more equal than others.)

I don’t blame the CEO. He never said everybody is equal in Corporate America. He has a fiduciary responsibility to his shareholders to limit costs and work within the parameters of the law. It’s the lawmakers (Obama, Pelosi, Reid) who changed the game and who should be blamed.

As an aged person, I think it and everyone that voted for it sucks. Aside from my decades long hatred of Rats, and trying to be fair and balanced, but off set by my belief in the “Depravity Of Man”, it still sucks.

Any other Questions?

The CEO has been on CNBC, He is touted has one of the major Black CEO’s in the nation and is a big Obama supporter. Also has touted the benefits of Obama care and his other intiatives.

He gets what he deserves, sad though, the employees pay the price.

Obama’s dream-com-true; a nation of part-time workers.

He wants to turn us into Jamaica ! A nation of part-time workers in the service industries.

Hey Liberal Morons - your unintended consequences are just beyond moronic. Liberalism is a mental disease - goes for Progressivism also.

Yup. I avoid them like the plague. I’d much rather spend my money on a small mom and pop restaurant anyday.

Yup. We formerly had a choice of 7 plans offered by 4 different insurance carriers or Kaiser. This year we are being offered 2 plans by a single carrier (no PPOs or HMOs, either, just 1980's-style high-deductible plans). We can't get Kaiser unless we are overseas. And starting next year there will be an $85 per paycheck fee to cover an employed spouse (thanks a lot, homos). Bumpy roads ahead.

EXCELLENT! More part-time employees=higher job numbers!

Bingo! The part time pResident is turning America into a part time nation. It's not fair that some people have full time jobs when others have no jobs at all! Job redistribution.

When I travel I generally eat at Truck Stops. The food is regional and surprisingly good. I learned the secret of grits in the Black Belt of Alabama.
