CRUISE LINER EXEC WRITES SCATHING LETTER TO OBAMA OVER NEW REGULATIONS
The Blaze ^ | 10/8/12 | Erica Ritz

The most common complaints by business-owners against the current administration tend to revolve around the economic uncertainty and increased regulation that have made it next to impossible to plan for the future.

Stephanie Gallagher, the president of World City America Inc., is lending her voice to the fray after the Obama administration reportedly moved to prevent American cruise liners from being eligible to get the long-term financing under Title XI that make building something as massive as a cruise ship possible.

As Royal Caribbean acquires its third Oasis-class ship from Finland, Gallagher writes that World City America has invested over a decade and $60 million in designing a “superior product” that would be built in America, by Americans, and paying taxes to the U.S. government.

“Having demonstrated that our plan would be economically sound, would not cost the taxpayers anything, would not increase the debt but would improve the deficit, the only way to push us off the cliff was to enact policy that preempted the nation’s ship financing program from being used to build cruise ships. That’s what the Obama Administration did,” Gallagher claims.

I see you have visited the Leaning Tower of Pisa. I was impressed with that structure in terms of actual size and the beautiful white marble used. My high school physics textbooks had picture of the tower and I was expecting a structure about 4 stories high. But nothing beats the Tajmahal in terms of fabulous details, quality of marble used, and enormity of size. How in the world did they build it without power cranes, power tools, and computers!

Federal crop insurance is not a good program. Another one-size fits all program.

No risk assessment.

The tower is amazing, I also enjoyed the coliseum and found it just as awe inspiring.

Man has built amazing structures but man’s handiwork pales in comparison to God’s, just visit Alaska. Breathtaking.

Just saw the German made version ‘Titanic’ on the American Movie Channel or TCM. I believe the filming, and or release date, was shown as 1943. It was an interesting movie with financial type shenanigans between some of the rich passengers and the Titanic’s Ismay.

Speaking of God’s work, I am amazed about the entire universe. We are just a planet in a solar system. Our Sun is eclipsed by much bigger suns in our Milky Way galaxy. The other solar systems in our galaxy are many light years away and many are much bigger than our solar system! Knowing how fast light travels, that is just mind boggling.

Then I think about the millions of other galaxies in our universe. Then there are theories that there are other universe systems out there! Where did all this come from? Only explanation which holds up is it was all created by God.

Walter Lord also wrote the definitive book on the Second Revolutionary War, also known as the War of 1812. That great book is called, “By the Dawns Early Light” and is long out of print.

It’s not a ship, it’ an industry

And it has national security applications in time of war or national emergency, when the cruise ships become national assets, like the airlines

But not to worry, the industry will find a govt willing to abate taxes and regulations to make it profitable to build ships

In China

“And it has national security applications in time of war or national emergency, when the cruise ships become national assets, like the airlines”

Whose assets? What countries? These cruise liners are mostly foreign registered. Despite that, are they U.S. company owned or is that foreign too?

well, its complicated but basically when the govt funds infrastructure like shipyards and shipbuilding, there often is a national security consideration as part of the deal

As you recall the Brits sent their troops to the Falklands on commercial ships when war broke out- there are certainly scenarios where the US govt would or could use cruise ships and commercial ports to augment a need for sealift for military or natural disasters, for example as if volcanic eruptions closed the air routes between the US and strategic locations in Europe or the middle east for a significant period of time (almost occurred in recent past)

This is the act that the writer is mentioning, as excluding cruise ships- an industry which contributes not only jobs and critical skills to the maritime industry, and port upgrades, but would certainly be called to do their part in national global emergency if we had to move a lot of people and supplies across oceans in a hurry. Offshore registry seems to be a convenience in many of these applications. I do not have time to research this in full, just thinking based on strategic planning in my past life

http://www.marad.dot.gov/ships_shipping_landing_page/title_xi_home/title_xi_home.htm

all ships now shown in the fleet are cargo or specialized. But I think in a (nuc) war between Iran and ?? or Syria and Israel, all bets are off as to how we get tens of thousands of US citizens out of harms way. Providing low cost financing pool access to one cruise ship is a helluva lot better investment for the taxpayer in many ways, than a thousand Solyndras

http://www.marad.dot.gov/ships_shipping_landing_page/national_security/maritime_security_program/maritime_security_program.htm

Similar to the airline industry with the CRAF
