Men jailed after sniper rifle found in back of minicab in South Croydon

FIVE men have been jailed after a sniper rifle was found in the boot of a minicab in South Croydon.

Tyron Harding, 45, sold the .22 bolt-action rifle and hollow-point ammunition - designed to cause maximum injury - to his fellow defendants on November 1 last year.

Armed police officers stopped Loyan Osman, 25, soon afterwards as he travelled along Brighton Road, South Croydon, in a minicab. In his possession he had 57 rounds of ammunition.

When officers searched the boot of the vehicle they found the rifle with a sniper scope and silencer attached. It was loaded with a bullet in the breach and more in a magazine.

Osman, Anthony Hosey, 28, Khadar Mire, 25, and Nathaniel Tracey, 27, had been watched by officers as they travelled from Lambeth in Mire's BMW to buy the weapon and ammunition from Harding.

As Osman travelled back to Lambeth in the minicab his colleagues followed in the BMW.

Officers arrested Osman after stopping the cab and subsequently detained Hosey, More and Tracey following further investigation.

On December 12, officers searched Harding's girlfriend's house in Huddlestone Crescent, Merstham, which was close to the location where the weapon was purchased.

In the loft they found another .22 bolt-action rifle with a telescopic sight and silencer. Three boxes of hollow-point ammunition, containing 62 rounds, were also recovered. Harding was arrested as he returned home.

Detective Sergeant Phil Holt, of the Met's Trident Gang Crime Command, said: "These men were found in possession of the kind of lethal weaponry that is typically associated with the most dangerous of criminals.

First of all, this story is sickening. A .22 rifle with a scope gets you sent up for sixteen years in UK now? Another reason to stay away from that muzzified place.

Would the penalties have been this harsh if their names were Achmed, Omar, & Karim? I think not. This was a hit on the EDL & nothing less.

Anyway, the movie was “Sword of Gideon” & the Mossad agents in that scene had their .22 bicycle pump guns at the ready. They confronted the Dutch babe who had killed their comrade and shot her when she went for her Walther PPK. One was unable to finish her off & the other said, “What the hell’s the matter with you!?” then picked up the PPK & shot her again. Good movie with an ironic ending.

Cool. I can sell my Marlin 60 (.22LR bolt) as a tacticool sniper rifle now. I can bring in the bucks.

> OMG! A bolt-action .22 with a scope and hollow point bullets!!

That’s similar to the rifle that I had when I took firearms safety and marksmanship in high school in the 50s. Those were the days when you were required to carry your rifle to all your classes because it wasn’t considered safe to leave it unattended in your locker.

62 rounds of ammo. Good Lord, they’d have gotten life is they’d had a brick of ammo with them.

If I wanted to create terror, in an urban setting like London, a suppressed .22 rifle would be one of the first tools I'd consider.

There's a reason the IDF used to use suppressed 10-22's control for crowd/mob control, until human rights groups complained too loudly.

Yeah. That’s one of my pet peeves. They act like they’re writing for a paper newspaper in the 1930’s and there is zero chance somebody who wasn’t born in town will ever pick up their rag.

Ah. So you agree with the principles of Prior Restraint, and incarcerating those who PROBABLY will do bad things, and simply possess the MEANS.

Well, you're probably going to beat your spouse, and the presence of that broom handle is more than enough proof. You may turn yourself in at your earliest convenience.

(By the way, I believe one of the big problems with the way this thread is going is that we are all assuming that the article, while horribly skewed on firearms facts, is accurate otherwise. I’d bet a donut that the stiff sentences are due to prior convictions, etc... but of course, the journalism major needn’t worry about facts and details when there are emotions to influence and social norms to create!

Them being career criminals out on parole might've had something to do with the long sentences...

Look at their mugshots: I kinda doubt they're card-carrying EDL members... they look pretty much like the Achmed, Omar & Karim characters you mention.

“Don’t think I’ve ever seen HP 22LR.”

I hadn’t seen it until I moved to Texas. I asked the girl at Walmart why all of their 22lr was hollow point and opined that it appeared that Texans were blowing up squirrels.

She laughed and said that the rounds were for Coyote. They are very common down here and very effective on Coyote.

“At least we don’t have to lose any sleep about the Brits invading us.”

How true. Last time they were in town they burned down the White House, now they probably would have to settle for a White Castle.

Don’t think I’ve ever seen HP 22LR.

Quite common, actually ... not sure that it does any meaningful expansion.

Being British, I can spot irony at a hundred paces, without the need for a ‘/sarc’ tag highlighting it. It is pretty obvious to me that Lurk was mocking journalistic ignorance about guns...

They were armor piercing hollow points. It was a .22 Cal AK47. Their plan was to bring down an Army helicopter. The rifle was fully automatic.

83% of .22LR ammo sold is Hollow Point

lurk was being sarcastic (at least I hope so)

You know "teflon coated expanding armour piercing heat seeking incendary bullets"

To settle the matter here's the evidence (sensitive people should avert their eyes.)
