Romney tries to bury Obama in ads
Washington Post ^ | October 12, 2012 | Dan Eggen and T.W. Farnam,

Republican nominee Mitt Romney and his allies are banking heavily on a high-risk, high-reward media strategy in the final weeks of the campaign, hoping that burying President Obama in ads will give them a crucial edge on Election Day.

Ad purchases in the presidential race doubled or in some cases tripled last week in swing states such as Colorado, Florida, Iowa and Virginia, tracking data show. The surge is being driven by Romney and well-funded allies, who decided against running more ads earlier in the campaign in favor of a big bang at the end.

Restore Our Future, a super PAC dedicated to helping Romney, has booked $14 million worth of ads in nine states for the final week of October — more than it spent on ads during the month of September. The group is also ramping up its spending, airing a mix of ads criticizing Obama and extolling Romney in Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio and Virginia.

Charles R. Spies, the super PAC’s treasurer, said conservative groups “have been very effective in leveling the playing field” with Obama. “That effort will continue at an increasing level going forward,” he said.

The GOP effort has gained momentum with Romney’s advance in the polls since the first presidential debate in Denver, where Obama turned in a widely panned performance. The Oct. 3 event sparked an influx of donations to Romney’s campaign and to conservative groups supporting him, giving them more resources for the final push, strategists said.

I think they referred to the holding off the big gun. It is a high risk strategy that I hope will pay off handsomely. So many Freepers complained about the strategy over the summer, especially right after the DNC. Romney seems to know what he’s doing.

The GOPers have finally started hitting back with the campaign ads. I thought they were never going to get around to it. Even Joe Arpaio is running ads. They are all tying their opponents to Barry Soetoro.

I wouldn’t be concerned about absentee ballots. Those who already cast their votes in the first couple weeks of the absentee ballot periods are the ones who have set their mind on certain candidate. No amount of ads would change their votes. Now, the possible fraud regarding the absentee ballots, that’s a different issue.

In the West, Colorado being an prime example, the absentee votes will likely determine the outcome even before the first vote is cast on Nov 6 and the trend is for even more absentee balloting in the future.

Candidates who don't pick up on that trend will lose..

You seem to set your mind on spreading anxiety among Romney supporters. Why would you want to do that to a candidate you will not vote for, anyway? After all, primaries have passed long time ago. Ron Paul already said he won’t support Romney. Romney’s campaign has decided their strategy and this is mid October. Just wait until after the election to see whether you’re right (and hence, earn the right of ‘I told you so’) or that Romney’s people actually know better than you do.

I’m a little disappointed you didn’t read my post on Colorado from two days ago...

2008: Obama-1.29 million votes (53.7%)
McCain-1.07 million votes (44.7%)
1.7 million votes were early/absentee votes in 2008. Most of this was absentee. For all the early voters in 2008, dems constituted 37.7% and repubs constituted 35.9%.

2012: Repubs have requested 656,813 ballots
Dems have requested 627,064 ballots

We have an abolute lead of about 30,000 in ballot requests. Plus add in the independent requests (don’t have that number) and we are quickly approaching total turnout for 08 and probably past all the early voting for 08. I need the number of unaffiliated requests to confirm this.

As of 10/1/12, there were 871,000 registered republicans and 807,000 registered dems and 798,000 unaffiliateds. So 657,000 republicans have requested ballots (75% of republicans are already locked in) and 627,000 dems have requested ballots (77% of dems locked in).

Fast forward to today. We have a much greater registration advantage compared to 2008. It is 64,000 compared to 12,000 and it was as high as 100,000 during the summer but nonetheless still much greater than 2008. And we are keeping pace with the ballot requests with dems and actually leading them in actual totals even though our percentage is slightly less.

At the close of registration in 08, 3.2 million registered voters and 2.4 million of those voted. That is a turnout of about 75% of registered voters.

Now we have 2.5 million voters on the rolls as of 10/1/12 and the deadline for registration was 10/9. And we are already at 75% of republicans having ballots and 77% of dems having ballots - I think this election is pretty much done. Not many more voters to vote overall. And we know unaffiliateds here in CO are different this year compared to 2008. All we needed to do was make sure republicans vote and vote R/R and I think that is readily apparent.

What say you?

I don't support Romney that is true. My comments are directed at strategy, If I was in the Romney camp or any other candidates I'd evaluate each state separately and do my ad buys based on the voting habits of that particular state and not think going after votes in those states that have already been cast is a good idea. I never got the rational behind being a cheerleader in an election or anyplace else, saying what folks want to hear is no way to win elections or succeed in any other endeavor..

" Where were these jerkwads last month when Obama was running ads in the college football games every five minutes? "

Doesn't matter now, those ads were a waste of money and time.... Benghazigate neutralized any effect those ads ever had.
The Obama Campaign can't gain any traction at this point because they are mired in the pit of Benghazigate and other scandals.
Let's not forget the misery of Americans are feeling in this ( Yes I made that ) Obama recession.

What say you?

You may be right.

The point I'm making is large ad buys in the last two weeks of the election wont change a single one of those votes.

In my view candidates need to take into account the growing power of the absentee vote and place their ad buys earlier in the election cycle rather than later in those state such as Colorado where absentee voting is such a great proportion of the total votes cast..

BTW I don't have the time to be here often us 53%ers are busy...

I have no problem you not supporting Romney. However, you seem to ignore my argument that people who voted with absentee ballots that early are those who already made up their mind so the number of ads wouldn't affect them. So, whether it's 5% or 40% in the region have voted so far, it wouldn't matter as far as ads go. It's a strategy that take into account the target audience (those who may change their mind) as well as preserving ammo for when it counts more.

It has nothing to do with cheering nominee or hearing what they want to hear.

What evidence do you have a campaign that has a massive data mining operation, targeting the precinct level, is somehow ignoring the pattern of Colorado voters?

Weld County in Colorado registered 119,000 new voters for this election. 38% Republican and 24% Democrats. We are one of the only counties in the country that has a budget surplus, due to an all Republican county board. I’m proud to live here.

Early voters vote early b/c their mind is made up. So it seems nonsensical to spend money on them doesn’t it?

Seems pretty obvious to most that money should be spent where it may make the greatest impact.

It also seems like this is so obvious that you’re just reaching for negative things to say about RR - the opposite of cheerleading - which you say you don’t do.

BS

I have to say, I was wrong about Romney. This campaign stayed patient and didn’t panic. The leadership Romney has show THROUGH his campaign (since before the primaries) has been nothing but impressive. He has won me over with his actions and deeds. I doubt he is the total conservative that would be my ideal President, but we need a leader, even if I won’t agree with him on every issue.

If you wait for a candidate that you agree on with every issue, you are waiting for yourself to run. Many kick and scream about holding to their principles and not compromising for a candidate, but they seem to ignore that unless they run, their only choice is to compromise and pick who's best for America. I just sent Romney $25...
