Focus Was on Tripoli in Requests for Security in Libya (new spin)
New York Times ^ | Oct. 12, 2012 | By ERIC SCHMITT and MARK LANDLER

WASHINGTON — In the weeks leading up to the attack last month on the American diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya, that killed Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans, diplomats on the ground sounded increasingly urgent alarms. In a stream of diplomatic cables, embassy security officers warned their superiors at the State Department of a worsening threat from Islamic extremists, and requested that the teams of military personnel and State Department security guards who were already on duty be kept in service.

The requests were denied, but they were largely focused on extending the tours of security guards at the American Embassy in Tripoli — not at the diplomatic compound in Benghazi, 400 miles away. And State Department officials testified this week during a hearing by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee that extending the tour of additional guards — a 16-member military security team — through mid-September would not have changed the bloody outcome because they were based in Tripoli, not Benghazi. . .

Obama appointees in the State Department are saying 16 more armed secuirty specialists wouldn't have saved Stevens because he was in Benghazi, not Tripoli. But might some of them escorted the U.S. ambassador to Benghazi if they were available? The Times is helping the White House split hairs.

The Libyan attack was an act of war on what is considered American soil.

I think it is about time these news outfits stopped working the Obama CYA.

While it is unclear what impact a handful of highly trained additional guards might have had in Benghazi were they able to deploy there, some State Department officials said it would probably not have made any difference in blunting the Sept. 11 assault from several dozen heavily armed militants.

So somebody knows how many attackers there were? Sounds like Hillary's investigation is moving right along. I guess that video is making the rounds?

Not enough security to accompany the ambassador in a war zone, but... now lemme see, how many SS agents were guarding Valerie Jarrett at Martha’s Vineyard at the time, and at what cost?

Wow, these people are even worse than the Clintons in coming up with new explanations for their failures.

And how many SS agents accompanied the Obama girl and her classmates on that trip to Mexico?

I knew this was a terrorist attack from the moment I heard the news....

That being said the average American would be shocked at how lax the security is at any American embassy/consulate in any third world country worldwide.

Since 9/11 I have often felt the most at risk when I have been forced by circumstances to visit an US Embassy. They are dangerous places which Americans traveling in the third world are wise to avoid..unfortunately I see the current clamor as nothing more than election year politicking and nothing will change..

I can no longer believe anything coming out of the White House. Stopped paying attention to their statements when they posted a forged document on their website. Before that, I gave them the benefit of the doubt even though I had my suspicions long before that.

State Dept. Rules of Engagement Kept Marines out of Tripoli, Benghazi in Libya

Paul Mirengoff at Powerline reported that the Marine Corps issued a statement on Thursday confirming that prior to the September 11 murder of Ambassador Stevens and three other Americans in Benghazi, Libya, no Marines were stationed in Libya, either at the United States mission in Benghazi or the United States embassy in Tripoli.

(snip)

Decisions regarding whether to have Marines at particular U.S. embassies and consulates fall to the State Department, according to the Marine Corps statement. In the case of Tripoli, the Corps says there were discussions with the State Department about establishing a detachment at the embasssy in Tripoli, a new embassy, some time in the next five years. That may seem like a long time, but for bureaucrats it is often considered ASAP.

Imagine if Bush and Cheney tried to pull this kind of crap.

A US Ambassador and 3 of his colleagues were murdered by terrorists while the Obama machine campaigned. The machine blamed the 1st Amendment as a response to the violence against American blood and soil. The Leftwing media accommodated this diversion.

So somebody knows how many attackers there were?

There were 20 recently released terrorist prisoners that were on the main ambush team. There were helpful 'others' from 'friendly' Libyan forces and the always present neighborhood thugs. Many were rewarded with big new SUV's.

Several dozen is very likely accurate.

Could you give me a source for that? I'm trying to compile as many links on this story as I can.

It is impossible to come up with excuses for the inexcusable.
This can be the downfall of the Qbama regime if used correctly. Romney should refocus every question asked at the next debate to Libya. I.E. Mr. Romney is there a war on women? No. There is a war on ambassadors.
