'I had to eat piece of my friend to survive': Torment of 1972 Andes plane crash survivor
UK Daily Mail ^ | October 13, 2012

Forty year on from the plane crash that changed his life forever, Dr Roberto Canessa still vividly remembers having to eat the flesh of friends to survive. He was one of 16 men who escaped death when their chartered aircraft smashed into the bleak Andes mountains between Chile and Argentina on October 13, 1972. They were rescued 72 days later after Dr Canessa, then a 19-year-old medical student, and another survivor trekked for 10 days to get help.

What would you have done? None of you can understand because none of you were there! You don't think about right and wrong when you're just trying to survive! Right and wrong, those are just words, they don't mean anything when you look around and all you can see is death, and all you can feel is the HUNGER...."

I think I saw Nando Parrado in Punta del Este once.

He was eating an ice cream cone at the time.

he did not “have” to eat a piece of a friend to survive, he did eat a piece of a friend and survived.

I would have let myself die rather than eat a human.

This garbage about “you don’t know what you would do under the same circumstances unless you are under the same circumstances” is the classic situational ethics scenario. If a person has principles, they stick to them.

There are some things worse than physical death. This “man” does not earn my respect.

Now the guy that cut his own arm off, he earns my respect, I doubt I could do that either.

But then again, I think this life is pretty torturous and won’t mind when it is my time to go home.

Yet when we go to Communion on Sunday...

I read the book, way back when, and the survivors did not just chow down, but reverently viewed eating the flesh of their friends as a sort of communion. I have little doubt they prayed and agonized over the decision.

At that altitude there is not much more than snow, ice, and rock, and the desire to live is stronger than most of us think.

I would have hoped for a good supply of charcoal briquets and bbq sauce.

I saw Nando give a lecture on a cruise ship. He’s a great and inspiring speaker, a with a tragic tale that has far more to it than cannibalism.

Agree. That book has been an inspiration to me for years. The survivors all said that if anything happened to them, for those who still survived to use their bodies if needed. Then an avalanche struck taking some who had survived the plane crash. They were Catholics. They were very reverent of their friends. Parrado’s mother perished in the crash and his sister lived only for short time. When he and Canessa struck out to find civilization, Parrado gave his permission for his sister's and mother's bodies to be used for nourishment if absolutely necessary. What greater love? The place in the book that has stayed with me for decades.......as the survivors tried to sleep at night, they had to sardine themselves into the fuselage of the broken plane and then seal up the open ends from the cold. They had specific places to sleep and one could not see out the window from his spot. Another survivor would hold a mirror toward a window so the other young man could see the moon. ‘I know my family is looking at the same moon in Uruguay. I feel the connection’. How anyone could fault these young rugby players for their survival needs is beyond me.

You say it like you think you will have a coherent, conscious mind when you are dazed by incredible hunger and there is no sight of redemption to be found anywhere. It's like trying to hold your own breath... after a point, your subconscious mind takes over and you will have no voluntary control over your own diaphragm and lungs until oxygen levels are restored. Your body is not as suicidal as your mind might be.

Remember the Donner Party pioneer expedition in 1846 into what is now California, through the Sierra Nevada?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donner_Party

Same thing: Starvation, disease and trauma caused one party to resort to cannibalism.

The Donner Party was a group of 87 American pioneers who in 1846 set off from Missouri in a wagon train headed west for California, only to find themselves trapped by snow in the Sierra Nevada. The subsequent casualties resulting from starvation, exposure, disease, and trauma were extremely high, and many of the survivors resorted to cannibalism.

The wagons left in May 1846. Encouraged to try a new, faster route across Utah and Nevada, they opted to take the Hastings Cutoff proposed by Lansford Hastings, who had never taken the journey with wagons. The Cutoff required the wagons to traverse Utah's Wasatch Mountains and the Great Salt Lake Desert, and slowed the party considerably, leading to the loss of wagons, horses, and cattle. It also forced them to engage in heavy labor by clearing the path ahead of them, and created deep divisions between members of the party. They had planned to be in California by September, but found themselves trapped in the Sierra Nevada by early November.

Most of the party took shelter in three cabins that had been constructed two years earlier at Truckee Lake (now Donner Lake), while a smaller group camped several miles away. Food stores quickly ran out, and a group of 15 men and women attempted to reach California on snowshoes in December, but became disoriented in the mountains before succumbing to starvation and cold. Only seven members of the snowshoe party survived, by eating the flesh of their dead companions. Meanwhile, the Mexican American War delayed rescue attempts from California, although family members and authorities in California tried to reach the stranded pioneers but were turned back by harsh weather. The first rescue group reached the remaining members, who were starving and feeble, in February 1847. Weather conditions were so bad that three rescue groups were required to lead the rest to California, the last arriving in March. Most of these survivors also had resorted to cannibalism. Forty-eight members of the Donner Party survived to live in California. Although a minor incident in the record of westward migration in North America, the Donner Party became notorious for the reported claims of cannibalism. Efforts to memorialize the Donner Party were underway within a few years; historians have described the episode as one of the most spectacular tragedies in California history and in the record of western migration.

I would have let myself die rather than eat a human.

What if your spouse had died and you had young children at home who depended on and needed you?
