American Community Survey/Census - Vanity
Vanity | 10/14/12 | Saoirise

Posted on 10/14/2012 8:15:29 PM PDT by Saoirise

Has anyone else received this survey in the mail in the last month?Allegedly it's from the census bureau and dept of commerce. The form asks very intrusive personal questions such as: "What time do you go to work? What time do you return from work? How much income do you earn?". I had never heard of this survey before so I didn't respond. A stranger showed up at my door and has left a couple of notes asking me to contact him to complete the survey. Get this - this alleged Government worker even contacted my HOA's Management Co and had them get in contact with me to return his call.

Any thoughts or advice at this point is greatly appreciated.

Got one a few years ago. (They appear to be covering the country slowly.)

There's no intent to cover all residences in the country, it's a random monthly sampling of addresses.

The reason for it is that things change year to year, and only having data every 10 years means data is pretty old by the time 9 years have passed.

The questions about time leaving for work, commute time, etc. are for road construction planning.

As much as I joke, I’m married to a pilot. I can’t even count the number of places I’ve lived. During our second or third year of marriage I tried and gave up at 44. I’ve now been married 18 years. I’d just be throwing a monkey wrench into the works and skewing their data.

Based on what I was told in training 10 years ago. Never had to do it.

We were told to ignore no trespassing signs.

Funny.

They never seem to ‘push’ us hillbillies.

I haven’t seen a census worker in decades.

[the first and only one, actually]

Ironically, I was a tester/hirer for the ‘80 census and when the enumerators would get back in, they’d always come to me and ask “WTF is WRONG with your people?!”

I always said “They don’t like outlanders askin’ nosy questions.”

Secretly, I laughed at their tales of terror involving ‘yard dogs’ and ‘shotguns’.

Then, years later, one pesky lady came around to “enumerate” *me*.

[ I was sitting on the old original ramshackle front porch, cleaning a squirrel rifle with chickens grazing in the yard and 2 Dobes lying on either side of me]

She stayed on the outside of the fence and kept BSing me until I told her I’d hired and fired people like her and knew what she could and couldn’t legally do or ask.

So she gave up and went away.

Far as I know, they’ve only managed to get my name and hubby’s name.

We don’t even get forms anymore.

Yeah.

I love having strangers knowing when I won’t be home, don’t you?

“We were told to ignore no trespassing signs.”

You were lucky.

Ignoring them here is a serious mistake.

I've only owned a house for two censuses (censi?), but I've never received anything in the mail, nor had anyone visit.

Of course, my district went 80/20 for McCain last election, so I don't think fedggov idiots are in a big hurry to add me, or others like me, to the tally.

For road construction? Seriously?

I’d of thought all those engineers and village workers
could track that information.

I just am not believing that reason, sorry.

We responded. Aparantly they didn’t like many of my answers. (”I don’t know” and “too personal. refuse to answer.”)

They started calling. And calling. And calling.

I blocked the number. That lasted about a week, then the calls started up again with a new number. I blocked that, too. No issues for more than a month, then they called that again. I blocked that one.

So far, I haven’t heard from them in the last few weeks.

You’re right. The information is too personal. If I have to pull out last year’s tax return to answer, it’s too much.

What really irks me is that it plainly states on their website that they share this information with companies.

“We were told to ignore no trespassing signs.”

So you were told to ignore the law? When I was growing up, my sisters took me onto a neighbor’s property and then we discovered “No Trespassing” signs saying trespassers would be shot and citing the law number. I was about 5 and scared to death. I was sure we’d all be shot. If a sign is posted, you’re taking a crap shoot with your life. I could understand that as a 5 year old.

Yes, I received one two months ago and filled it out. There is nothing sinister about it.

Count yourself blessed...:)

[or blessed that you're uncounted...whichever]

Back in The Good Old Bad Days of Gov. Glendening, he just ignored W.MD *completely*.

O'Malice is trying to turn us into a tourist destination for liberal flatlanders.

Stuff like this is common, here.

We love it when the libs ask us for directions.

Sometimes, I wonder where they actually ended up, hours later.

Me either.

OTOH, I’ve got no-joke warning signs, 24/7 CC security cams on DVR and nasty dogs on duty whether I’m home or not.

We’ve had two series of break ins all around my area lately and we were the only house not hit.

Imagine that.

I keep the front gate locked so they can't get in the yard.

Then I answer the door with him charging out.

Even that weirdo who keeps trying to sell me steaks out of the back of his truck never comes around anymore.

My elderly mother “helpfully” filled out the d____d thing and sent it in for us !

All it takes is one person in the family to “cooperate” and all your privacy and also any firearms ,etc. etc. are at risk.

The government type know a woman in the house is much less likely to defy them.

Things that make you smile.... If my dog ran to the front gate someone would have wet pants. Sadly, I’m just renting so there’s no lock. Does Poison Ivy grow in Nevada? I wonder if I could buy some from Gardener’s Supply...?

Poison ivy, far as I know, grows just about everywhere.
And there’s always poison oak and Sumac.

Oh, they’d much rather deal with hubby in this household. Don’t take on an aged ICU nurse from a world renowned university teaching hospital. I’ve biotch slapped the best and brightest. The census worker...cruel and unusual punishment meeting me. Hmmm, however my husband is a pilot and did reduce a Delta captain to tears in a bar once. I guess we both have our unique strengths.
