Katrina vanden Heuvel: How Romney’s extreme policies insult us all
Washington Post ^ | October 15, 2012 | By Katrina vanden Heuvel

Posted on 10/15/2012 10:52:13 AM PDT by Oldeconomybuyer

At first glance, it might seem as if Mitt Romney’s path — from voting in the 1992 Democratic presidential primary to being the 2012 Republican presidential nominee — was linear. But over the past, winding, 20 years, Romney has held every possible view on every possible issue — often at the same time. When it comes to policy, he’s been downright promiscuous.

Jolted with a fresh shot of post-debate energy, Romney is just doing more of what he’s always done — whatever it takes to get elected. This comes naturally because he is, fundamentally, a cipher. The only thing he believes is whatever is politically expedient in that given moment. And right now, he needs to be a hard-liner to get the GOP base to the polls — and a moderate to appeal to those last few independent voters.

His solution is to sign on to the fanatical policies of the extreme right, and then duck and cover to confuse independents about where he really stands.

Enough is enough. Romney’s campaign has made for great “Daily Show” segments. But we’re three weeks away from determining the next leader of the United States. And at this point, Romney is just insulting Americans — our intelligence, our values, our democracy — with the campaign he is running. Tuesday’s town hall debate is an opportunity for voters — and President Obama — to articulate the real consequences that Romney’s real policies will have on real people’s lives. So let’s hope that, at the debate, voters will finally demand that Romney get real.

The sentence that screamed projection to me what the concept that Romney is a “cipher.” Not to see that same characteristic in Obama is incredible. What you write about Romney is on target, too.

Catholics being forced to pay for contraction.

I won't pay for contractions either. I'd prefer to continue using contractions freely as I believe it's a violation of my grammatical rights otherwise. Haven't our forefathers and foremothers written this in bold type over many years and won't they be disappointed in us if we become the can't do generation?

Nana's family were Torrie Scum in upstate New York during the Revolution where my family lived at the time, we supported the Revolution.

The Torrie's and the Indians along with their Limey Pals Murdered and Raped across Northern NY until after Saratoga and General Sullivan's booting of the Limey Iroquois out of Northern, NY.

It was one of the least known Civil Wars during the Revolution it was Bloody, Nasty, and not studied. It was on the equivalent to the Wyoming Massacres in Eastern Penn, read up.

Wow, the manipulative, hypocritical stupidity and seething hatred of this article is breathtaking.

The utter destruction of civilization, all compressed into the techniques used one little screed.

Hillary creatures.

Don’t even think of calling them human.

Yes Nana’s family were in Albany and Herkimer County...

Rebels burnt down our trading post with a helpless invalid man trapped inside...

arrested an unarmed harmless 60 year old grandmother her children and grandchildren, one aged 10...

and put them in jail in Fort Dayton...

Nana also had Tory scum ancestors in Wyoming...

Tunkhannock, Mehoppany...

Nana is proud of her Tory scum blood...

Especially that loud mouthed 6th great Grandma...

Rebel scum also had Indians who raped and murdered and scalped...

read up...

BTW Nana has the certificates for FIVE Loyalist ancestors...

all born in the US of American parents...

all more qualified to be POTUS than your Wee Willard...

It is nice to locate your treason, you people murdered and raped at least 5 of my ancestors in Albany, now Saratoga, Counties.

It is a proud dance that you do, claiming moral superiority for people that murdered and betrayed their neighbors, no wonder you fled to foreign lands.

Wyoming Valley, Penn, did you ancestors participate or at least aquess in the murder of the settlers there? You may have a Robinson in the Family.

Go to the Saratoga County History site, and if you can decipher my screen name we have a lot of mentions.

We were Scots Irish and English and settled there in 1730, from NH and Conn. After a long search no Arnold's and no Torrie's.

Did the 5 unarmed women and 31 children who fled north unescorted from the Susquehanna River Valley to Fort Niagara do something bad to your ancestors ???

I have all the names so who did what ...

Maybe the 3 year old youngest son of my ancestor ???

He was bound for the War of 1812 so Im sure he already had ideas of doing Rebels harm...

Maybe my other family and that 10 year girl who had just lost her father, murdered by the Rebels on the Mohawk River...

Was it your ancestors water she stole that time she went to the creek with her bucket as she flrd from the Rebels with her widowed mother and widowed grandmother ???

Maybe she thought of her young teenaged cousin, raped and murdeered by the Rebel guards in Fort Dayton and plotted revenge...???

What of her thoughts years later, when now a widow the descendants of those Rebels invaded her new homeland and burnt down her house on July 19, 1814 ???

Maybe she thought kindly towards them because at least they did leave her the barn to live in, of only a few left standing in town..

and thankfully they never found the saw mill and the grist mill out on the edge of town which still stands to this day...

and maybe if she had known that the officer from the lower colonies who ordered the burning and distruction on a path through the province of Ontario was tossed out of the American Army in disgrace because of it she may have felt that at last the Rebels had found a heart...

all she knew at that time was to gather her little family around her and start from scratch once again, thankful that this time nobody died and that she still had 2 good hands and a strong back...

and could offer shelter in her old barn to her neighbors...

American Exceptionalism at its best...

Yankee Knowhow and gumption...

I am SOOO proud of my 4th great grandmother...

BTW with their homes burnt and their lands confiscated and a price on their heads there was nothing to come back for...

What do you think is the problem?

The 'problem' (to some folks) is FACTS.

They do NOT like some of them.

They do not like some of them being exposed.

They do not like some of them being talked about.

They do not like some of them being associated with a favorite of theirs.

They do not try to DISPROVE the facts; but are quite willing to castigate those who post the facts.

They will try to insult any poster who lists the facts that they do not like.

They will slander any poster who fails to waste his/her time defending against the insults that were ineffective.

Other than these small annoyances; there is no problem.

He was bound for the War of 1812....

We fought at Plattsberg Landing when you people attacked us, worked out well didn't it.

Cry me a river, you people committed atrocities and we weren't supposed to notice.
