University of North Carolina denies Iraq vet in-state tuition as it mulls giving break to illegals

EXCLUSIVE--The University of North Carolina, which is currently considering giving illegal immigrants in-state tuition benefits, denied an Army sergeant the same break even though she owns a home in the Tar Heel state and only moved away briefly because the military stationed her husband in Texas.

Hayleigh Perez, 26, hoped to use her G.I. Bill to attend the UNC’s Pembroke campus near Fort Bragg, but the young veteran -- who served a 14-month tour in Iraq -- was told she did not qualify as a state resident because she had been gone for about three years.

“I got frustrated. When I tried to inquire, they kept putting up roadblocks,” Perez told FoxNews.com. “It’s just disgraceful that life in Iraq, where you could die, is easier than trying to go to school here.”

As I said, I got lucky, but I was still outraged by having to collect all those documents to prove I was a resident when an illegal who goes to high school for 3 years gets automatic in state tuition.

Newsflash: if they were going to high school for three years they were a resident for three years. You admit you barely made the cut of "one year." Suck it up.

You've got two choices: federal incurious into this clear area of state sovereignty over who and what is a resident of itself or get it changed in your state.

The feds are not going to make illegals who've squatted here "no residents" as an outgrowth of immigration policy. There's no political will for that, there's no widespread support for it in the country and it would be demographic suicide to even try.

Did you attempt legal action?

When you make everything about race illegals you sound as idiotic as the leftist race baiters.

Look, I agree with you, but that post in number 7 above was not your best. Those folks were tapping a real issue that needs to be addressed. If your admonishment were taken serious, nobody would ever be able to address issues of racial inequity that are used by the Left to game the system.

I did suck it up. After 3 tours to Iraq, I decided to change my residency to California where my car registration was retroactively charged from the time I arrived in the state even though it had 8 months registration left. I also paid several thousands of dollars in tax, not including the near 10% sales tax.

The GI Bill used to pay a certain amount yearly, but they changed it to cover only in-state tuition for public schools. Military move around a lot and may need to move again after completing service in order to find work. This means military with state residency issues are not eligible to use their benefits for the first year or more depending on the school.

There should be an exception for active duty and veterans who move within a year or two of discharge.

Good point. I guess my separation of thought comes from the fact that I don't consider illegals a race or "color" although that is probably naive.

I went to my nephew’s high school water polo match in East Los Angeles yesterday. One of the young men on the other team, has been a problem for the last two years.

Two years ago, he played in a game when he was ineligible to do so. That could have been a major scandal, because he wasn’t a student at the school he was playing for, but we chose to keep it to ourselves. Even then his massive size and abilities made it clear to us he was over age. Two years later, he’s still on that team.

Yesterday he was wearing a swim suit with “MEXICO” across the back-side.

This guy plays way above the ability of the other kids on his team, and our team. And yesterday there was an additional guy that fit all the same descriptions. He scored over 60% of the other team’s goals.

Both were of one ethnicity. A third kid of another ethnicity was matched up with my nephew. He spent most of the game putting his arms clear around my nephew from behind, holding him, so he couldn’t participate in plays. At times he would put his arms and even his hands on my nephew’s shoulders and push him under water during play where the ball was right next to them.

The official didn’t make one call based on this kid’s actions. What he was doing was grounds to have him benched.

We have watched the coach of that team utter expletives to trash his own team members. That includes the F word too. On top of that he always seems to have three to six young high school girls hanging on him at the games.

This guy obviously teaches his team members to play dirty, and I’m not just referencing playing hard. He congratulates the guys coming back for a time out, who have been doing things over the top.

These guys swim over the team members with the ball. They slap/hit the other team players, even if they have the ball. The first guy I mentioned above, took his fist and hit my other nephew in the back last year.

After you’ve had a number of experiences like this yourself, and you’ve watch how our system is being gamed, you come to not be too bashful about calling a spade a spade.

Last year we went to a new school that replaced the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles. It’s named Robert Kennedy High School.

On our team, we have about a 90% presence of 50% or higher ancestry Hispanic team members. As we walked into the pool area, one of the other team’s members stated, “Look, they have entirely too many Whites on their team.”

RFK High is an approximately $500 million dollar edifice. It’s one of four I have visited in the immediate downtown Los Angeles area. And the students, probably 90% plus the children of illegal aliens.

After the game, the home team is supposed to stick around, shake the hands of the opposing team, and then clean up the pool area.

Most of the home team was gone by the time the game was over. The other players left immediately after the game. We, the visiting team rearranged the pool area to set it up for normal swimming.

Look, I don’t like taking race into consideration, but you know what, they are. My brother and I are both married to Hispanic women. I have other family members who are as well.

This isn’t about seeing a people as vile. It’s about understanding what some of them are doing is. If we can’t talk about issues with candor, we’re completely disarmed.

Imaging any former conflict or issue our nation faced, where the populace was “politically corrected” into not talking about the facts.

No ill will is held by me here. Take care.

I think that’s a fair response. It would have involved getting our coach canned, and throwing the whole program up in the air. As a visiting family member, it wasn’t my call. I can understand your point of view. I can understand the other point of view as well.

I was not happy about it at the time.

I don’t wear a cape but I try to find the side that is honest and follows the rules.

I think you’d look nice in a cape. ;^)

I don’t disagree with your take on it in total.

The coach used poor judgment. It was a one time incident in the three years I was observing. The coach has since moved on.

I know it seems black and white, but you can’t disregard your family member’s take, and the very supportive team of kids in the program.

There are times when you can intervene, and there are times when you probably shouldn’t. I think this was an instance of the later, but I don’t have a problem with people coming to a different conclusion. I’m not always right.

We live in Southern California and our son was a Merit Scholar and a Fulbright Scholar applied to UNC Chapel Hill and was rejected until the fools read his whole application and discovered that when he was 16 he had met with the Governing Council of the Jicarilla Apache tribe and talked with the neighboring Ute tribe and convinced both of them to rebuild a portion of the old Denver & Rio Grande Railroad between the 2 tribes in Colorado as a steam tourist attraction.

Suddenly he was offered a full ride at Arizona State, University of Oklahoma, Pepperdine University and of course, Chapel Hill!!

But after graduating from Chapel Hill's Business School, he swore that UNC will never receive a dime from him because the administration and the professors are so far left, they border on communism!!

Have you ever been around the children of a family member, and thought they needed to be swatted?

Did you swat them, or did you confront the parents and read them the riot act so that they didn’t want to come to family events if you were there?

There are times in life when you can’t do what you would like to if you were the only person there.

If you don’t want to accept that, it’s okay with me.
