Chris Matthews: If Obama's 'Getting Beaten Again' in Debate, People Will Switch to Yankees Game By Noel Sheppard Created 10/16/2012 - 5:53pm

MSNBC's Chris Matthews on Tuesday made a rather startling prediction about viewers of the upcoming presidential debate.

"If it looks like [Obama's] getting beaten again, they’re going back to the fourth inning" of the Yankees-Tigers American League Championship game (video follows with transcript and commentary):

CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: I say it’s the first two minutes. People are watching the Yankees game from eight to nine. They’re going to tune this in at nine. They’re going to be a little late, but they’re going to be looking to see the tone of it. If it looks like the guy’s getting beaten again, they’re going back to the fourth inning.

JOHN HEILEMANN, NEW YORK MAGAZINE: Well, that’s true.

MATTHEWS: Anyway, thank you John Heilemann, thank you Joan Walsh, and David Corn. The guys agree: it’s baseball first if this guy blows it.

Yes, the liberals on set agree. However, moderates and conservatives around the country will likely stay with the debate if Mitt Romney is winning because they know this is far more important than baseball.

We'll learn the truth when the ratings come out.

Stay tuned.

With the exception of maybe one or two percent I’ll bet that most minds are made up already. The “debate” won’t change much if anything. Now the Marxist forces are mustering to STEAL the election. They know from their internals that they can’t ‘win’ it.

It doesn't seem to occur to Chris Matthews that conservatives are ‘people’ too. Everything out of Matthews mouth is an insult.

Matthews may be be half right. They will continue watching the game, forget the debate and let the first debate results drive their opinion.

Time to worry Crissy.

Verlander is going to pitch a post season no hitter soon.

I’ll be watching MSLSD to see Tingles the Town Drunk’s head explode when the emperor is proven to have no clothes for a second time.

I hope he pitches it tonight. (Because, when the Tigers play the Cards, I want his no hitter over and done with) I’m a transplanted Tiger to STL. Geography and and stuff like that. I’m torn between two worlds.

In a strange way, Verlander reminds me of Denny McLain. When he is on his game, NoBody can hit him.

I’ll be watching the game, yet listening and throwing TV bricks every time the 0pansy speaks tonight.

I think Scherzer comes up in the rotation before they leave Detroit as well. He’s second in AL strikeouts after Verlander.

I think most Americans - other than desperate Dems looking for vindication and hope - will skip the debate anyway. The first debate left an impression that made King Kong jealous!

I’d love it if both Obummer and the Skankees were handed stunning defeats tonight. That would be a worthwhile doubleheader.

Both spend an extraordinary amount of money to pretend they’re the best that ever was.

There it is. Tigers strike first with a home run from Delmon Young.

As long as Verlander doesn’t emulate Denny McLain later career (and post career - in and out of jail since).

Maybe the final ALCS game tonight. Max Scherzer pitching for the Tigers and CC Sabathia on the mound for the Yankees.

If Obama's 'Getting Beaten Again' in Debate, People Will Switch to Yankees Game.

It's even money on which I would have enjoyed watching getting beaten more.

I pray that Verlander dose not go that route. McLain was a Quasar....a shiny bright star that burns hot but burns out quickly. Too bad. Too sad.

hey, Tigers just swept NY.

See you guys in The Big One. GoCards Tonight.

Weather: Cloudy, chilly, possible rain.
