84% of New Yorkers OK with NYC (Vast majority satisfied or very satisfied with New York City Life)

The ultimate Big Apple life would have New Yorkers raising kids on Staten Island, doing retail therapy in Manhattan and picking up groceries in Brooklyn.

A poll of Gotham dwellers released yesterday found that 84 percent of New Yorkers said they were “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with city life, matching the same 84 percent number from the 2011 and 2010 surveys.

But this New York love story takes a wild turn, based on borough of residence.

For example, 89 percent of Staten Islanders said they “strongly agreed” or “agreed” that their neighborhood would be good to raise kids, topping Queens (83 percent), Brooklyn (76), Manhattan (68) and The Bronx (67).

Manhattan respondents, though, were the most happy with shop-till-you-drop options.

That’s because 71 percent said they had “excellent” or “good” retail options, outpacing Brooklyn (67), Staten Island (66), The Bronx (57) and Queens (55).

Brooklyn appeared to be the best borough to score groceries, with 75 percent saying they had “excellent” or “good” access to markets and grocery stores.

Staten Island (73 percent), The Bronx (70), Manhattan (69) and Queens (68) followed.

Even an esoteric measure like optimism about the city’s future varied greatly by borough.

As a whole, 81 percent of New Yorkers said they were “optimistic” or “very optimistic” about the future of Gotham, up slightly from 76 percent in last year’s survey.

Residents of Manhattan had the most optimistic view of life, at 87 percent, followed by Brooklyn (85), Queens (80), The Bronx (75) and Staten Island (69).

There are actually New Yorkers who have lived their entire lives without ever having left the city - not even for a visit.

I can’t blame you. Especially now. It was much better when Rudy was Mayor and I hear rumors he may run again. New York City is my favorite city in the world. It’s Los Angeles and the State of California I’ve refused to go to.

I lived in Phoenix and Tucson and I loved Arizona (especially Phoenix). I love the culture of Texas and much of the south including Tennessee. The Real America is what I think of them.

This is a testimony to the virtually infinite adaptability of the human organism. An illustration of the attributes that enabled us to transcend adversity and rise to the top of the food chain.

Most of the rest of the USA would be pleased if NYC was excised and parted from the rest of us. Keeping all the MSM HQ with them of course, they suit each other so well......

I left in 1976. Been back a few times and I'm always glad I left when I did.

Jeff Cooper, the firearms instructor said that when he was in the military he dated a girl from Manhattan who had never been off the island.

I was in NYC a few months ago. Loved it! I met lots of people from there who loved it! They all wished they lived somewhere else, but they loved NYC.

I would never voluntairily live in such a huge, crowded city. I'll stick to the Rocky Mountains...

Just wait for the big bank layoffs to accelerate. Also, salary and bonus cuts.

I visited NYC for a weekend in 1967 and that was enough for me. I never want to go near the place again. I found the average New Yorker very insular, uninformed, yet arrogant.

The average New Yorker knew very little about the real world outside of NYC and some thought that visiting New Jersey was going to a foreign country. Some New Yorkers even wondered if they needed a visa to visit states in “flyover country” — the Midwest and South.

That’s true in other places though. I have business phone contact with many people in Dallas who were born and raised there and never taken a vacation or been anywhere else. Not sure why. Seems rather boring. We have such a big wonderful country with lots to see and do.

Re the 16% of New Yorkers who are not OK with NYC, I swear they have all moved to Texas. Having been to NYC a few times, I can understand why they would want to leave. Big city life is not my cup of tea. Too many people, too much noise, too much concrete.
