I see the lefties are cheering that "horses and bayonets" line even though it's misleading (vanity)

And what do you know? The Marines still use horses too! So much for Obama scolding Mitt about now knowing anything about the military as it is today!

Well Obama’s point is partially right but... Even though horses and bayonets are not so central to military thinking these days the anology breaks down because ships are needed in great numbers.

Those aircraft carriers he mentioned move with escort ships and many missions are not for carrier groups so other task organized groups of ships complete the missions. Naval power is still tied to a great variety and quantity of modern ships.

The Marine Bayonet

From 500 yards, every Marine is accurate with a rifle. Attach the OKC-3S Bayonet, and the weapon becomes just as effective in close combat situations. Also a Marine’s multi-purpose fighting knife, the OKC-3S is the weapon of choice when shots can’t be fired. Every Marine receives bayonet training in the Marine Corps Martial Arts Program (MCMAP) and on the Bayonet Assault Course in Recruit Training.

In a pinch a bayonet can also be used in hand to hand combat, used to dig, hack through jungle growth, a fish spear, and many other uses. A true survivalist/soldier knows there is no such thing as a single use tool.

I think all the posters here make great points, and show why 0 was wrong. However, the average independent voter does not know or care about these facts, and will never see these admirable rebuttals from Freepers. In their minds, 0 delivered a clever coup-de-grace for which Romney had no response. It would have been more effective had Romney made some of these points during the debate, but 0 won rhetorically.

Not sure how much impact it will have, but 0 definitely won on tactics, even if they were dishonest, since there is no way to go back and correct these impressions in the minds of the debate watchers.

Hoping R&R's lead holds despite today's debate ...

I think we can assume that Obama (nor Romney) doesn’t know that personally owned tomahawks have been used in hand to hand combat in Iraq, and a fair amount of knife use in close combat.

Green Berets from the 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne) walked alongside the newly dedicated De Oppresso Liber statue as it made its way down 5th Avenue as part of the New York City Veterans Day Parade, on November 11, 2011.

It was this location where members of Task Force Dagger – a joint Special Operations team consisting mostly of Green Berets from the 5th SFG (A), aircrew members from the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), and Air Force Combat Controllers – gathered with the Vice President and various New York business leaders and veteran support groups as they unveiled and dedicated an 18-foot statue, entitled De Oppresso Liber.

De Oppresso Liber, which in Latin means “to liberate the oppressed”, depicts a Special Forces Green Beret on horseback leading the invasion into Afghanistan in the weeks that followed the World Trade Center attacks.

It captures the iconic image of adaptability, skill, and courage that characterized the mission and quality of US Army Special Forces Soldiers.

Biden Unveils Special Forces ‘Horse Statue’

WASHINGTON, Nov. 12, 2011 – Vice President Joe Biden praised the dedication and capabilities of U.S. special operators yesterday as he unveiled a statue in New York honoring the Special Forces soldiers who rode into the mountains of Afghanistan on horseback in pursuit of the Taliban after the 9/11 terror attacks.

What is ironic about the whole thing and something Barry and his zombies probably don’t understand was that Barry was actually advocating for small, deadly, hit and run units like the Special Forces riding horses (Horse Soldiers) and carrying bayonets in Afghanistan. LOL! It’s a strange world.

Respectfully, I think that if the “average independent” in Wisconsin was informed that Obama threatened to terminate a shipbuilding program that was going to funnel $16 Billion into the state, they’d sit up and take notice.

Probably a lot of blue collar Reagan Democrats would too.

This could be something that puts Romney over the top in Wisconsin. Really, it’s that big of a deal. To the point where I’m starting to wonder whether it was a setup with Romney baiting Obama into saying something phenominally stupid. This looks to me like a gift on a silver platter.

The commanders have stated that we need more ships than Obama plans to have. Rather than discuss the issue, Obama opted to make a sarcastic quip using the Alinsky tactic of ridiculing Romney.

Problem is, he was also ridiculing the commander’s concern to have more ships and shows his ignorance of the fact that all of the ground troops have bayonets and are trained to use them.

there is nothing to be gained, politically speaking, engaging in petty gotcha commentary this late in the race. That was obviously a planned comment by Barry, along with the Costanza rip, but it was far from substantive and did Barry no favors.
Romney needs to go back to his current approach and allow the voters to decide if they want a President or a Celebrity-In-Chief.
