Richard Mourdock: God at work when rape leads to pregnancy

NEW ALBANY, Ind. — Indiana Republican Senate candidate Richard Mourdock said Tuesday when a woman is impregnated during a rape, "it’s something God intended."

Mourdock, who’s been locked in a tight race with Democratic challenger Rep. Joe Donnelly, was asked during the final minutes of a debate whether abortion should be allowed in cases of rape or incest.

"I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God. And, I think, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happened," Mourdock said.

Punishing a baby with death is always wrong.

Then you say something along the lines that rape is a horrendous crime and those who commit it deserve the strictest punishment that the judicial system can hand out. And that your heart goes out to those women who are the victims of this kind of crime, and especially those where the rape leads to pregnancy. But no matter how deeply you sympathize with the victims of rape, you can't see how compounding the tragedy by taking an innocent unborn life makes things better. You don't go around speaking for the Almighty and saying how it was all a gift from Him. Not if you've got any brains in your head.

what matters are the views of undecided voters in Indiana. I assure you that especially among women, they will not be positive.

And that would only be the latest in a long line of proof that letting women vote was a terrible idea.

Shame on anybody dumb enough to fall for this sh*t.

He's expressing the common, Christian belief about life. Only an idiot or an emotional pussy would get bent out of shape about that.

He could of just said, “I believe in the sanctity of life not matter its conception or origin.”

I understood what he meant but in today’s over-sensitized, over-hyped MSM, you knew how this would be spinned.

And the GOP throwing him under the bus is just too typical.

There needs to be a boot camp for conservatives to learn how to talk about abortion. I’m deadly serious. What is it with these guys?

This is getting pretty annoying. I’ve supported Akin and I’ll continue to support this guy, but isn’t there some sort of 30 minute refresher course these guys could take on pro-life talking points? I myself have a little booklet.

If you say God intended for that life to happen, then you are saying, whether you mean to or not, that the rape was supposed to happen too. That child’s life would not happen without the rape happening. Now, God does want the child’s conception to result in that child being given life.

It’s just unfortunate that the Democrats are on a hair trigger to bust pro-life Republicans for saying things in a dumb way. It’s our society that has made it harder for people to speak in support of life than for people to just say the word “choice” and get away with standing idly by in support of horror.

How does he know God intended for the rape to lead to pregnancy? God gave us the free will to sin and He gave us nature. Sins, such as rape, impact our physical nature and our spiritual nature, but I wouldn’t say that it is God at work. I would say instead it is people working against God.

Rape is not only an assault on the woman, it’s an assault on God and the gift of life.

Now make yourself clear, jackass.

“I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God. And, I think, even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happened,” Mourdock said.

I wish he had said something such as this,

“I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize that life is that gift from God. And, when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, I will not pretend to understand what a woman in that situation faces. I do believe though that God has not abandoned her or the life she carries and I trust that He will bring good from the most evil of acts. That to advocate for abortion because a child was conceived by rape is to deny that trust and give way to hopelessness.”

Dambit, Gumby! What is so hard about this?! All you have to say is if the death penalty is good enough for the baby conceived in rape it’s good enough for the rapist.

It’s a misstatement. His point is taken and no matter how he said it he was going to be lambasted. The liberal media will get as much mileage out of it as they can. I credit him for his integrity and honesty on the issue. Unfortunately in this PC world that does not work in his favor no matter how he would have said it.

Wow!!! A man that speaks the truth.

The point is that you can say stuff like that and win local offices, and the odd safe Congressional district in the South, and MAYBE a statewide office in a state like Mississippi, if you're lucky.

But you can't say stuff like that anywhere else and win a statewide office, or a national office. Not now, and not in the lifetime of anyone reading this, I strongly suspect.

Mourdock’s clarification tonight: “God creates life, and that was my point. God does not want rape, and by no means was I suggesting that he does. Rape is a horrible thing, and for anyone to twist my words otherwise is absurd and sick.”

I agree, anyone who twists his words to mean otherwise is absurd and sick. I think it’s time for Republicans to stand together against this stupid, adolescent gotcha game played by the democrats.

The media know rape, incest and women’s issues are a minefield. They are often hoping for blood so their story gets attention. If it bleeds, it leads.......
