Light a fire on a bad air day and you may be going to smoke school -- or pay a $100 fine if you refuse.
The Bay Area's air pollution district is getting tougher this year on scofflaws, violators of its four-year-old rule banning home or business owners from burning wood fires in chimneys and stoves during Spare the Air alerts.
First-time violators used to get off with a written warning, but they won't anymore.
Effective Nov. 1, when the cold weather Spare the Air season begins, first-time offenders will be required to take a class online or read written materials on the health hazards of wood smoke. Afterward, they must pass a 10-question quiz.
Play hooky and blow off the requirement, and a wood burner will be fined $100 by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.
"We think people have had enough time to become familiar with our rule as we're going into its fifth season," said Kristine Roselius, air district spokeswoman. "The point is about educating people to protect public health from smoke on the few days a year when meteorological conditions lead us to forecast violations of federal health standards for air quality."
In another change this year, the air district will use more conservative criteria in calling Spare the Area alerts at lower pollution levels.

My liberal neighbor gets away with burning wood and trash in his fireplace. He’s constantly bringing home scrap wood, painted, chemical pressure-treated, he doesn’t care. Always foul-smelling smoke, as they sometimes burn trash with plastic.
There’s a loophole - if you have no other means of heat they don’t cite you. My neighbor’s furnace broke a couple decades ago and he refuses to fix it. Meanwhile, since I maintain my 60-year-old furnace I can be punished and can’t use either of my two fireplaces. One a-hole emitting smoke worse than a hundred fireplaces and he gets away with it. Liberal eco-Government sucks.
After the SHTF and society is breaking down, I can imagine some weenies running around trying to enforce environmental ordinances. lol.
Outdoor grilling is banned in many Kalipornia cities actually, I hear San Pransisco has helicopters that fly around on weekends looking for tell-tale signs of outdoor cooking.
The loophole makes some sense if you live off the grid without other means. He has a furnace yet refuses to fix it, and probably has electricity that could power a space heater.
On the bright side, maybe the fumes will kill your neighbor before they get you. /s

An unfortuitous downdraft could carry those chemical fumes back into the house... also I wonder what the heck his creosote situation is like? There must be some wonderful stuff condensing out of that smoke on the upper, cooler part of his fireplace. Could create one marvel of a chimney fire if he isn’t super diligent about keeping it clean.

I do not see how these politicians can afford their life insurance policies. I have my wood burning stove going as it is 36F and windy. Any ploofer who objects I would tie to a tree overnight to see how they like their policies. There is nothing like being forced to live to their own stupid ideas to make their carbon footprint dissappear.

I'm to the point now where I consider this whole farce to be part of the iconoclasts effort to reshape society and its traditions.
just think how much money kalifornia would save if they didn’t have to have helicopters flying around to see if somebody was grilling a hamburger or a hotdog.
