WaPo: CIA rushed to save diplomats as Libya attack was underway
Washington Post ^ | November 1, 2012 | Greg Miller

The CIA rushed security operatives to an American diplomatic compound in Libya within 25 minutes after it had come under attack and played a more central role in the effort to fend off a night-long siege than has been publicly acknowledged, U.S. intelligence officials said Thursday.

The agency mobilized the evacuation effort, took control of an unarmed U.S. military drone to map possible escape routes, dispatched an emergency security team from Tripoli, the capital, and chartered aircraft that ultimately carried surviving U.S. personnel to safety on Sept. 12, U.S. officials said.

The account, which was provided to news organizations Thursday by senior U.S. intelligence officials, is the most detailed chronology presented so far of an attack that killed the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans, including two CIA security officers. The attack has become a flash point in the U.S. presidential campaign.

They waited 25 minutes before they sent Tyrone Woods, that may have been the difference between life and death for Sean Smith and Chris Stevens

First, on the question of whether Woods and others were made to wait when they asked permission to move out immediately to try to rescue those at the consulate. The answer seems to be yes, but not for very long. There was a brief, initial delay — two people said it was about 20 minutes — before Woods was allowed to leave. One official said that Woods and at least one other CIA colleague were “in the car revving the engine,” waiting for permission to go.

Why would they wait so long to report this?

and WHO issued those orders?

at what time?

WTF. Then what was all that crap about the video? Lots of A-covering going on now. But it remains clear that the administration tried to conceal the truth. Maybe because they had know for a month that such a thing might happen.

Raises more questions than it answers. First and foremost, who the Hell was in charge of this operation? The WH failed to convene the interagency group that handles such incidents. The fact that this team was dispatched from Tripoli begs the question as to why weren't other assets used. They had to charter an aircraft and then they were held up at the airport by Libyan officials. Where was the WH and the State Department in all of this? Obama should have been on the phone with the President of Libya demanding assets be sent immediately to the scene to rescue our people and check with the hospital.

This all sounds like the Keystone cops.

And how many did they fly out on the 13th? Where did they fly them to and where are they now?

Yes, they rushed. Woods and his cohorts rushed to the compound which was 1.5 miles away. It took them 25 minutes. And they had to disobey orders to go. When they returned to the unsafe house, they waited for hours for military assistance. Does the CIA have no equipment for taking out targets? Or does the military usually aid in such?

No matter how you slice it, this was a fubar months in the making, and someone should have already been fired. Unless the responsible party is the tea sipper in chief.

The story says the boots on the ground made their own decisions throughout the night with no interference from Washington. Duh. The agents in Libya whether in Tripoli or Benghazi were totally on their own. Their cries for help were ignored by Washington.

The CIA rushed security operatives to an American diplomatic compound in Libya within 25 minutes after it had come under attack

Now it's the CIA who did this, rushing security operatives to the rescue?

I thought the two former Seals went on their own, possibly against orders.

This coverup gets uglier by the day.

They want me to believe that two SEALS going out on their own and disobeying order equates with "the CIA rushed security operatives"?

Probably never more than a handful of Agency people within range. They tried anyway, probably hoping to buy time until the cavalry arrived.

The cavalry never came. Imagine how cynical you’d have to be as a member of the CIA and still could never imagine that the POTUS himself would leave you to die like that, never lifting a finger.

This treachery will echo long and have consequences that we can’t begin to imagine. This is as big a betrayal or bigger than the USS Pueblo.

Ok let me try to understand, they were sent to help the people at the annex? They get to the annex and find out that thirty people are at the safe house. They are told don’t go per Fox. So what was the plan? To clean up any looae ends at the annex. Think about it they were ordered not to help the safe house.

They charter a plane? We have assets 2 hours away that don’t need clearance. Why charter a plane? This appears to be an operation that happened and was controlled by someone who didn’t want any other branch involved.

The WPost is trying to convey an impression that “help was sent *and got there*” when only the “help was sent” applies, because the Tripoli team was held up.

More parsing and measured statements to transfer Obama’s shame onto other shoulders pre-election.
