Obama campaign touts welfare's positive impact
By JOSH GERSTEIN | 11/1/12 4:48 PM EDT

For two decades, Democrats running for the White House have observed a basic rule: when discussing welfare, do so only in the context of "welfare reform."

That's why it was so striking to see President Barack Obama's campaign depart from that tradition and use the W-word Wednesday without any reference to reining in or overhauling such programs. In fact, the Obama camp seemed to be boasting about welfare's success in buffeting the impact of the country's recent economic downturn.

In a list of 29 of Obama's accomplishments, newly posted on the campaign website, No. 9 is this: "His tax cuts, social-welfare programs, and economic policies lifted nearly 7 million Americans above the federal poverty line in 2010."

And he claims he’s Bill Clinton.

Mr. President, I have met Bill Clinton and you’re no Bill Clinton!

I voted for him the first time but I NEVER voted for you! Now go put some ice on it.

All we have to do is look at the words of the greatest economist in America, Nancy Pelosi. At a press conference in her home town of San Francisco, Pelosi explained that the Welfare program’s multiplier effect –the amount of money generated in the local economy as the result of the subsidy– far exceeds the nearly $60 billion spent this year by the federal government and is a sure-fire way to stimulate the economy. For every dollar a person receives in food stamps, Pelosi said that $1.79 is put back into the economy. Do I need an S/ here?

She doesn't ever mention that the government took up to $5 out of the economy (away from working Americans), to get that mythical $1.79 put back into it. Welfare recipients NEVER put back money into the economy that hasn't already been taken out of it. Government ALWAYS siphons off over half of what is taken out.

“For every dollar a person receives in food stamps, Pelosi said that $1.79 is put back into the economy.”

According to that logic, all we needed to do to get out of the recession was to give EVERYONE food stamps, creating a powerful stimulus equivalent to nearly 20% of GDP (the U.S. spends about 10% of GDP on food). This “liberal logic” of how we could have spent our way out of a recession is proof positive that members of Congress should be required to pass Econ 101 before being allowed to put their economically illiterate ideas into legislation.

Another “accomplishment:” Don’t forget, Pelosi said when people collect unemployment compensation it creates jobs.

Why, this is a regular job creation program, considering it takes caseworkers, and shrinks, and CPS, and home checkers, and swarms of other people to issue one check.

It's shovel-ready!

(Ready to shovel your hard earned money into the public coffers to dole out to the compliant!)

Oh how I wish there were an IQ test for holding office!

It’s bad enough that we can’t require voters to be intelligent, but it’s sad that our elected leaders are so ignorant.

The other requirement on my wish list would be that a public officeholder must have spent more years working in the real world than holding office and living off the taxpayers. So if someone with 6 years in the workplace is elected to the Senate for a 6 year term, that’s fine, but before he runs again, he has to go back to the real world and put in another 6 years working at a real job.
